We dedicate this yearbook to our classmate HUDSON EKISS who was killed accidentally on February 14, 1953 Sunshine passes, shadows fall. Love's remembrance outlasts all. And through the years by many or few, They will be filled with remembrance of you. A tragedy visited our school when Hudson Ekiss met his death Saturday, February 14. His cheerful ways and friendly manner made him one of the most popular and best liked boys in the school. He did not always participate in sports, but he was always present to root for his team, and during his freshman year, he was a cheerleader. He took part in several school and community activities such as Chorus, F.F.A. , Letterman's Club, and 4-H. He was the kind of person who, when he had set a goal would not stop until he reached it. He had the talent for making friends far and near. He was a person whom everybody knew. Hudson had a fondness for sciences, and in his spare time he was found in chemistry laboratory doing experiments on his own. Because of this fondness, there has been a memorial fund in his remembrance set aside to buy some equipment for the chemistry room. 2 W. L. GARRISON Superintendent of Bethany Unit District 301 and Principal of Bethany High School. TO THE GRADUATES OF 1954 Your four years of school are now completed, and you are about to leave the school and soon, perhaps, your own home to launch out upon a program of your own. Some of you may think you have encountered difficulties in these four years, but there is abundant evidence to indicate that it was never intended for man to have a life of ease. The world is so organized that most of his time is spent in conquering obstacles. All progress is made by overcoming difficulties. There seems to be some purpose in this persistent necessity for struggle. This conclusion is strength- ened by the fact the finest characters and the highest types of civilization have been produced in the colder zones where comfort can be secured only by persistent toil. Both the Bible and history reveal the fact that there is a vital relation between hardship and strength. For the upbuilding of character, conflict is better than peace, and work is better than ease. Heinrich Heine once said, Wherever a great thought is born there has been a Gethsemane. Now that you have terminated this phase of your work, and are ready to take up a new and different kind, you too, will find that it is only by persistent and determined effort that you can hope to achieve Worth- while goals that are satisfying to you and of value to those with whom you associate. Yes, this is the first year for a woman president, and I bet you can't guess who it is? Yes, it is our faithful president of the Senior Class of Bethany High in 1954, Doris Wampler. Although it isn't Wampler any more. It is Mrs. Johnny Smith. Doris gets to pick her own people she wants to serve under her, and so you can guess who the Vice-President is, can't you. Hey, look who just walked in the door, the Secretary of the Navy, and his family. And do you know who his wife looks like, well it is-Beverly DeVore. It looks like they are getting ready to sail their own boat. They have just about got their own crew, all dressed in sailor suits. Bev. was talking about some of our old classmates that are in the Navy. She said that great Romeo, Tom Gregory, is the Admiral of a big boat. He has a girl in every port, I guess, except one in Calcutta where his wife is. Bev. said she was talking to him the other day and he had just kicked two of our classmates off the boat, Kenny Oathout and Bob Johnson. He said they were getting a little rough and wouldn't do what they were told. They always were that way. Tom said he found Patsy LaCost on his boat the other day as he was headed for Siberia. She said she was running away from her seventh husband. She said she was going to see if she could find one who already didn't have over twenty wives. The butler has just come into announce dinner, and who do you think he is? Perry Fabley. He says he has been working at the White House ever since he got out of school. Well we have to leave our friends now and head back for home. We called a taxi to take us out to the airport, and who should be driving it, but that car crazy kid, John Gaither. He and Nancy have been living in Washington quite some time now. He said he has only had 20 wrecks so far with his cab. (He has only been driving it 2 weeks). He said he saw Bob McGee the other day. I guess he is quite a business man. Do you know who we met out at the airport. Lillian McReynolds. It guess it is Smith now, though. She said Joe was piloting the plane that we were on. It is their own little private enterprize. Lillian said she saw Alberta and Joyce the other day. They are both still single, and are in business at Sullivan together. Barbara Sill is running a beauty salon in Decatur. She gets a lot of business, I guess. Helen Austin helps her when she has time. She is a traveling saleswoman for some big firm. I guess she really makes the dough. Somebody had better latch on to her. Francene Miller is married to a rich farmer. They live on a farm, and Lillian said they are raising a big herd-of children that is. As we look out our airplane window now we see the horse ranch of Carrel Merold's. I think his ground only covers 30,000 acres. They have a big fine house, but Pat doesn't have to take care of it by herself. Sonny Goetz was Carrel's foreman, but he got to staying out too late at night, so Carrel had to get rid of him. We hear Jim Ward is his foreman now. You had better be careful Jim. We would hate to lose two of our old classmates. Well here we are landing at Bethany's big airport, and whom do you think we see, Jennie Hudson and her husband Jack, and their four children. Jennie said they are living in Mattoon, but they were going to Paris for a couple of months. The plumbing business must be good. Jennie said she saw Dolly Bone yesterday. She is married to John Carnes and they live in California. They have two pairs of the cutest twins. 43 THE HEADLINES OF 1974 (Continued) Well the plane is ready to take off so we will wave good-bye to Jennie and Lillian and go get something to eat. This place looks familiar, so we will go in here. Why it is the curve, and look who is running it. Floyd Gerkin. He had to keep the business going, on every curve in Illinois. Do you know who Floyd's chief cook is? Buck Bartimus. He sure is a good cook too. He would make some girl a nice husband, if they could ever catch him to marry him. Floyd told us that Dale Bland has taken over the John Deere Implement Company, and is doing quite well at it. He is happily married and is raising a big family. Dick Boyer has taken over V-Roy's job in Bethany, and is doing right well at it, Floyd said. He travels all over the world, and he has a bigger fan club than some movie star. Well I guess that just about takes care of the Senior Class of 1954. Sorry to leave but I must get home to my ten boys and Tom. We have turned Dunn Station into a regular little town. THE SENIOR CLASS WILL Lyle Goetz, a fair-haired lad, who gives the impression of being bad, leaves his daily trip to Brown's to Howard Brown. Pat LaCost, though short she may be, leaves to Doris Sutton her ruling hand. Tom Gregory, better known as Tom Cat, wills his ways with the women to anyone who can take them from him. Doris Wampler, a nurse in profession, leaves Johnnie to any girl providing of their confession. Dick Boyer, the magician of our class, leaves his talents to any lad or lass. Joyce Shipman, a clarinet fan, leaves to Jeanette Armor her place in the great Bethany Band. Bob Johnson wills his helpful and loud voice to anyone who is willing to aid the next year's cheering crowd. Bev ’-ly DeVore, our first June bride, takes a great pride in willing her garter to the first one who desires to use it. To Gene Tohill, Bob McGee leaves his quiet ways. By all means, take heed! Francene Miller wills her quiet, wistful ways, while she's at school, to her sister Violet, which she hopes will help her. Kenny Oathout leaves his Jersey cow to Jennings to decrease his grocery bill. He also leaves Janet Taylor to whom it may concern. Helen Austin leaves her ability to dodge the mumps to any lucky underclassman who hasn't had them yet. Dale Bland, an athlete he is, leaves to Butch Bennett his place on the football squad. Margaret Bone, who we call Dolly, leaves her cheerleading and her band suit to Shirley Heckler, a sophomore to be. John Gaither leaves his ability to skip school to Jim Gaither so he can make use of it. Ralph Buck Bartimus, will never be seen in a bus, 'cause his little green Ford he will have with him always, but he says he will give to his brother the parts that are left. Lillian McReynolds, she leaves to Bethany High, a path she has worn to the little brick school house just across the lawn. Floyd Gerkin, a root beer stand he has; but be as it may, he leaves only his haint's and his ain'ts to anyone who thinks they could use them. 44 Norma Jean Smith, with a hearty laugh, leaves her cheery ways to Jeanne Elder, an oncoming sophomore. Jim Ward, a gent he may be, leaves Eddie Tucker to Jack Brown to make sure that Eddie doesn't get unruly. Jennie Hudson, a hard working student, leaves all of her toils and troubles to any oncoming senior. Alberta Cruse, our singing voice, leaves her ability to sing on pitch to Nancy Pettypool so she can take Alberta's place next year in chorus. To anyone on Lula's bus, goes Perry Fabley's way to keep Tommy Sheehan in line. Barbara Sill leaves her beauty parlor experience to anyone who can make good use of it. Carrel Merold, a horse lover he is, leaves to Lewis Crane an open road so that he may go riding some day. THE SENIOR CLASS HISTORY We stumbled into the territory of B. T. H. S, and listed thirty-six into The Hall of Fame in the fall of 1950. We became famous people on September 18, when we were initiated. Our first leaders were President Margaret Bond, Vice-President Beverly Tinnea DeVore, Secretary Bernard Jackson, Treasurer Garnet Lillico, and Reporter Hudson Ekiss. Mr. Mahan was the sponsor of our class. As Silly Sophomores we brought 36 members back. In the last semester Barbara Jones entered making 37, the largest class in school. Our leaders this year were President Dick Boyer, Vice President Hudson Ekiss, Secretary-Treasurer Dale Bland. We elected Mr. Kasai as our Sponsor. As Jolly Juniors we lost ten of our famous people to the outside world. During our junior year Kenny Keown moved to Farmer City. A great tragedy met us in February 14, 1953, when a fatal accident took our classmate, Hudson Ekiss. Our leaders this year were President Dick Boyer, Vice-President Doris Wampler, Sec- retary Jennie Hudson, Treasurer Dale Bland, and Reporter Alberta Cruse. Our sponsors this year were Mr. Davis and Mr. Jennings. Our Junior Play Our Miss Brooks w s directed by Miss Lucas. We gave a Prom for the Seniors May 9, at Scovill's Country Club in Decatur. The Sophisticated Seniors started their last year with 25 members, having gained Perry Fabley and losing Eileen Marshall. Our leaders this year were Presi- dent Doris Wampler, Vice-President Dick Boyer, Secretary Patsy LaCost, Treasurer Floyd Gerkin, and Reporter Alberta Cruse. Our sponsors this year were Mr. Davis and Mr. Jarrand. Our Senior Play, Headin' For A Weddin' was directed by Mr. Lovell. A very nice Prom was given us by the juniors at Kempers Country Club in Decatur on May 1. Our Baccalaureate service was May 23, and our Graduation Exercises, May 28. The following are the students who spent their 12 school years together: Kenny Oathout, Jenny Hudson, Carrel Merold, Beverly DeVore, Dale Bland, Margaret Bone, Norma Jean Smith, and Jim Ward. Our names are now put up in fame in the hall. We ended our session with a trip to Chicago to see the sights. We wish to thank all of the teachers and other classmates who have helped us during all of our school years. We wish especially to thank the teachers who have been our class sponsors, and have endured with us the many things that we have done. We hope the classes to come will have as much fun as we have had in our school years. 45 STANDING: Kenny Oathout, Jennie Hudson, Carrel Metold, Beverly DeVore, Dale Bland, Dolly Bone.
