THE REVERIE 'S3 PUBLISHED BY THE SENIOBS HF '53 BETHANY UNIT HIGH SCHOOL BETHANY, ILLINOIS LETTER TO THE GRADUATES TO THE GRADUATES OF 1953 Your four years of high school are now com- pleted, and you are being ushered into a world, which at present, is beset with uncertainty and confusion. Some of you will continue your education in higher institutions of learning; others will enter into different fields of endeavor. It may be in- dustry, business, military or other vocations that will call you. Even though there is the present uncertainty in the world, there are opportunities far greater than ever before for all who have the desire and perseverance to succeed. Or we might quote Ralph Waldo Emerson and say This time like all times is a very good one if we know what to do with it. W. L. The lib- rarians are those students who volunteer to work in the library one of their free periods. The library acquired over one-hundred new books during the year. A twenty-two volume set of Dictionary of American Biography was also pur- chased, which covers the history of American men and women from the beginning of our country to present time. Magazines are now protected by the plastic covers bought this year. Because of the increase in books over the past few years it was necessary to buy an addition to the Card Cata- logue. The library, itself, was newly painted for this school year. The library this year observed Book Week by using posters throughout the school, passing out book marks and having a display in the library, it- self. Another display was of a Vocational nature for the Vocational Guid- ance Clinic held this year. THE BROADCASTER CO-EDITORS Joann Sharp and Marscha Miller The 1952-53 Broadcaster Staff consisted of twenty five members. Joanne Sharp and Marscha Miller were the co-editors. We, the senior class of 1953, entered the halls of Bethany High School in the fall of 1949, feeling a bit apprehensive but eager to begin our higher education. Our class congress elected Miss Alt, sponsor; Genell Morris, president; Jolene Schwartz, vice president; John Tipsword, treasurer, to govern us during our first year of high school. As our class candidate for Fall Festival Queen, we chose Jolene Schwartz. The student council members were Jim Saddoris and Darlene Tipsword. Our money-making projects were: the magazine drive, in which we sold Si, 190. 50 worth of magazines, with Joanne Sharp and Jim Saddoris as team captains, and Genell Morris as general manager; our other projects included a play entitled W« Shook the Family Tree , and concessions at the athletic events. On May 17, at the Sportsman’s Lodge in Decatur, we gave a banquet and prom for the seniors with Bob Bauer and his orchestra playing. Taking our honored places as senior statesmen, we chose as sponsors, Miss Lucas and Coach Jostes. The cheerleader for this year was Jeanette Morris and Martha Dalton served as a majorette from our class. Genell Morris and John Tipsword were selected as co-editors of the annual. This senior year ended a twelve year class companionship of three of the members of the graduat- ing class, they were Joanne Sharp, Jolene Schwartz, and John Tipsword. Graduation activities began May 9 with a banquet and prom at Scovill's Country Club in Decatur given by the junior class with Johnny Moreland and his orchestra providing the music. We ended our high school career with a trip to New Orleans and the Gulf Coast. And for the support of this declaration and with a firm reliance on what the future holds for us, we mutually pledge to each other, our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor. JOLENE SCHWARTZ GENELL MORRIS LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT We, the class of nineteen hundred and fifty-three, being of sound mind and body, do hereby make and declare this to be our last will and testament, and is hereby witnessed by the fol- lowing officers of the Senior Class. VWC f - (Zajlo. _ The dashing John Tipsword, The playboy of this town. Wills his way with all the girls To all the boys around. Jeanette Morris, our Homecoming Queen, The tiniest one in the class. Leaves her size 4 cheer leading shoes to Doris Sutton, a freshman lass. Now comes Jolene Schwartz With a disposition fine, And in the care of Joyce Shipman She leaves it all behind. Jerry McDevitt, the next on our list, Whom sport fans like and cheer, Leaves Janet, his steady girl, To the junior class of next year. And now Jim Saddoris, The billard pride of the school, Leaves to Jack Coventry His ability to shoot pool. We now have Bob Queen Whom all the girls think fair. He leaves with Barbara Morey His dark and shining hair. Next is Martha Dalton, Who is known well around town. She wills her majorette boots To the freshman, Nadine Brown. Phyllis Wheeler, a generous soul, Leaves to B. H. S. girls, near and far, Her ability to always get to Sullivan With or without a car. Marscha Miller, our senior class wit, Has giggles and grins to spare. She leaves her ability to be Naughty but Nice To anyone willing to dare. Gene 11 Morris, a capable leader, Who is always striving to win, Leaves Shirley Wheeler her senior headaches Except for the ones that are men. Joanne Sharp, true to her name. Has proved to be no dunce. She leaves to her cousin, Dorotha, The ability to hold two men at once. Through the mirror of the future, we see each '53 grad In a gown and good fortune, has been generously clad. Let's look a bit closer, taking each in his turn, And see, of his future, just what we can learn. Jeanette is now living in Sullivan. After leaving high school's toil and strife, She went off to the University of Illinois-- Not as a co-ed, but as Leon's wife. Genell, our versatile graduate, Has five majors, and minors three. She ended her college career By marrying a Ph. D. Marscha made the perfect secretary And ended up in New York. Her boss says she's quite capable, Especially in Central Park. Steve took over the trucking business. His slowness was no handicap. He bought himself a bulldozer, And just dozes while he naps. Jerry played pro football for ten years, Then he thought of a better scheme. He married Janet and settled down To raising his own football team. Phyllis went into business with Jim; This wasn't her original plan, But it proved to be a huge success, As she married a tomato salesman. Jim took his farming seriously. As he did his Ag class in school. He now lets his sons do the farming While he wins tournaments in pool. —Marscha Joanne, now an opera name, Has appeared many times in Carnegie Hall. A genius! the critics, far and near, acclaim. Her beautiful voice is loved by all. Jolene wanted to learn more about life. She went to Eastern for one semester. That was the end of her higher education; She married her sociology professor. Bob Queen, now a TV star, Plays Li’l Abner on a serial each day He had offers to go to Hollywood But wouldn't leave Daisy Mae. Martha, now living in Macon, Is happy as she can be. She's made Bob a wonderful wife, And their children now number three. Kenny, an Admiral in the Navy, Is constantly in and out of court, Being sued for breaches of promise By a girl in every port. Johnny took Ag in college, And advanced at a rapid pace. He not only runs his farm in Bethany But he teaches in Bosomworth's place. The vision's gone, the mirror is blank, We've seen that these graduates will really rank, Success and happiness for all we see, And we sincerely hope that that’s what it will be.
