KARL LADVVIG Religion Languages Ein Memoriam The College suffered a great loss with the death of Lennard Cunnerson on August 2, 1944 at his home in Lindsborg following a brief illncss. He had been a member of the Bethany staff since 1900, and during that time he had devoted his talent and interest whole- heartedly to the program of the school. Mr. Cunnerson, or Len as he was affectionately known, came in contact with thousands of Bethanyites who hold him in kindly remembrance. He served with splendid results as Curator of Musical Instruments and Instructor in String Bass. He was a well-known figure in the Bethany Symphony Orchestra and during his forty-eight years of membership in the Messiah Orchestra, he never missed a public rendition. Mr. Cunnerson's kind and friendly manner was greatly appreciated by his associates. Many students of every generation found in his workshop a cordial reception for counsel and friendly conversation. His devotion to Bethany, which dated back to his association with Bethany's Founder, Dr. Carl Swensson, remained unbroken throughout the years. In addition, he served a wide area in Kansas and the Middle VVest as a piano and organ tuner. The familiar figure of Len Cunnerson, walking to or from the campus from his home across the street from Presser Hall is missing from the Lindsborg scene. But here as every' where among Bethanyites he is remembered and held in high esteem. It was founded in 1903 by seven faculty members and advanced students of the University School of Music, Ann Arbor, Mich.. who felt the need to organize the serious music students so that they might develop all possibilities for musical advancement. There are 81 chapters throughout the United States. The total membership in 1943-1944 was approximately 15,000 initiated members. Our chapter, Alpha Alpha of Theta Province, was or- ganized in 1923. Every chapter must be prominent in the musical activities in its school and the individual members must strive to represent the highest possible ideals in their school work and general activities as well as advancing their abilities in their chosen Held. This year ten members of Alpha Alpha Chapter have given recitals. Since then, the students of Bethany College and the citizens of the community have sung the immortal music of Handel and Bach. The present director, Dr. Hagbard Brase, has been in charge since 1915. The reputation of the Messiah Chorus has spread to all parts of the United States and the VVorld. Recordings have been made the past two years and rebroadcasts have reached the far corners of the world. The recognition Lindsborg and Bethany receives has been made possible by the splendid cooperation of the students, faculty members, and towns peo- ple who constitute the chorus and orchestra, and the fine performance and understanding of the score by Dr. Brase. Each year professionals are engaged as guest soloists for Easter week festival. 1n addition to their Sunday perform- ances they present individual reeitals for the public. The soloists this year were Marvel Biddle, soprano, Virginia Auyer, altog James Montgomery, tenor, and Elwyn Carter, bass. This year, due to the illness of Dr. Brase, Mr. Arvid YVallin directed the chorus and orchestra in their presentation of Handel's Messiah. To the thousands who have heard the chorus sing, the Messiah Festival represents the acme in choral music. Mrs. Chris- tine Larson is an ever efhcient housekeeper. Social fellowship is afforded the girls through an annual open house, numerous parties and teas.
