PIHLBLAD President of Bethany College This book will go with you down through the years, not because of its intrinsic monetary values, but because of the treasures of the soul contained Within its covers. The faces which you will meet on its pages in days to come will bring back the associations of happy school days spent at Bethany. Sweet memories are among life's most precious possessions, more to be cherished than the fabled riches of Midas. You may forget the lessons which you painfully learned in its lecture halls andlaboratories, but may it help to keep alive in your heart the spirit of faith, hope, and love which Bethany, even with its shortcomings, sought to inculcate. EDNA REINBACK, writing a monograph on Music and Musicians in Kansasf, published as an official document by the Kansas Historical Society, has the following to say about the achievements of this organization: In any survey of the musical history of this state the Lindsborg Messiah Chorus stands predominant. It is both the result of and at the same time one of the most influential factors in the wide popular interest in music in Kansas and in the cultural growth of the state. Certainly nothing in the realm of arts has brought more renown to Kansas, and the fame of this remarkable production has spread over the United States. Bethany College was the pioneer and to a large extent has furnished both inspiration and leadership. The Cratorio Society was organized in 1881 by Dr. CARL SWENSSON, who had, a short time before, founded the school which grew into Bethany College. To interpret Handel's Messiah,' was, at the time, the prime objective of the society. The first performance was given in 1882, and was directed by J. CSBORNE of Rock Island, Ill. Every year there- after the society has presented the oratorio at least two times, once on Palm Sunday and again on Easter Sunday. The Bethany Symphony Crchestra accompanies the renditions. ln recent years another oratorio, St. Matthew's Passionf' by S. BACH, has been inter- preted by the society on the evening of Good Friday. Dr. HAGBARD BRASE, the present director, has been in charge since 1915. lPagc Forty-fourj any ietyiig Q - 1 , ag I 2-rc! resic , DR. ERNST F. PIHLBLAD vw C , . Dr. HAGBARD BRASE f ompanist . . This Organization was founded in the spring of 1934. All the students living in the men's dormitory are included in its membership. lts purpose is to promote friendliness and good living conditions in the dormitory. There are over 50 members in this organization, and the boys realize it is a privilege and a pleasure to stay in these quar- ters. This is shown by the fact that the building is always filled to its capacity. Meetings are held regularly once a month in the organization club room on the third floor. Refreshments and a social hour are a regular part of these meetings. In addition to the usual monthly social meeting, the boys are hosts to their companion dormitory club, Tau Pi Alpha, once a year. This is always an exciting event with many surprises and thrills prepared for the guests. The club provides a pingfpong table and a radio for the convenience of the boys. Ping-pong tournaments are very popular as the indoor winter sport of the dormitory, Many a warm battle is staged in contest for the coveted title, Champion ping-pong player of Beta Eta Theta. The purpose of the organization is to reach as many of the girls of the campus as possible in order to bring them into a more intimate Christian fellowship. The group strives to help all of its members grow into deeper faith, hope, and love toward God and man through jesus Christ, and seeks to unite the girls through social, physical, and religious activities. The motto of the Organiz- ation is Be Christ's Workers. The association chapter is the love chapter found in the thirteenth chapter of First Corinthians. Every fall the B. C. Each girl new to Bethany is pro- vided with a big sisterl' who is one of the older students. The love of Christ which passeth all understanding must be the constraining power, the driving force, the motive of all missionary activity. It was this love of Christ that motivated a group of students to organize the Missionary society following a meeting of the Prayer Circle in 1919. Ever since its organization this society has been a growing and a most active one on the Bethany campus. During the school year students who are interested in the religious activities are afforded an opportunity to tell the gospel message by word, music, and song. A special project of the Missionary Society is the summer tour. Last summer it sponsored its most extensive tour thus far. The gospel team, consisting of six young men, traveled through eleven western states. Cn this tour many Augustana Churches were visited, a few of the United Lutheran, and some institutions of mercy. The purpose of this missionary work is twofold. Firstly, to spread the gospel of our Lord and Master, and secondly, to help support home and foreign missions. The funds, derived from freewill Offerings received from the congregations in which programs are given, are used to help support two tent bands, one on our field in China, and one in India. All students, faculty members, alumni, former students, and friends who are interested in the extension of Godls kingdom are eligible to membership in this society. lPage Fifty-sevenl C'- 1 l X . 1 r xi ,ff K5 L, e.e.. HAROLD SANDBERG The Pre-Sem Club was founded in 1931 with the purpose of furnishing an intimate Christian fellowship, and the development of a deeper Christian spirit among those who are interested in Christian work, especially those preparing for the ministry. Looking back upon the last six years, it is evident that the club has been successful in its purpose. The membership this year is about three times as large as that of the original club. Weekly meetings are held each Monday at which a supper is first served, followed by a program. Speakers at the meetings have included visiting pastors, members of the faculty, and students. Open forum discussions with the exchanging of personal experiences and problems have also been very helpful. The organization has sponsored several projects which give its members practical experience in Christian work. Une Luther League program each month at the Messiah Church, and services every other week at the Bethany Home are given by members of the Pre-Sem Club. Cnce each month during the first semester of school, services were held at the Enterprise congregation. Two of the clubis members hold regular charges, and others occasionally speak in the surrounding churches. Dr. GEORGE F. HALL is the club's new sponsor, and through his influence the individual lives of the boys as well as the spirit of the club have been strengthened and enriched. The Pre-Sem chorus, under the direction of LUTHER HEDEEN, is in its second season. Besides singing at several congregations, the chorus this year made its initial radio broadcast. lPage Fifty-eightl ,Wi 1 .ff ,D Luther League OFFICERS ' President . . . . . Dorus QUARNSTROM With the Luther League motto, Une Win Cne, in mind, the Bethany Luther League strives to spread among the students the spirit and motives which are the essence of Ghris- tian living. Both the eternal joy and the missionary spirit are suggested in the motto. The Bethany College Luther League meets for an hour each Sunday evening before evening services. The programs are rendered mainly by the students themselves with the cooperation of the members of the faculty. The programs have been of a varied nature including talks, song services, and open forums. At each meeting musical numbers are given by the students. ' The two main purposes of the League are: to draw the students into a closer relation- ship with Jesus Christ, and to provide opportunity for training in Christian leadership. One faculty member states that he is lost unless he begins his week at the College Luther League. Many of the students gain some of their real experience in speaking at League meetings. This year the organization seems more successful than last. A definite spirit of worship and reverence is present at each meeting. That youth is hungering more and more for Christ is evidenced by the large increase in both attendance and interest. The Luther League provides a quiet hour at the end of the Sabbath Day in which the college youth can begin a new week with Christ. The organization is a member of the Lutheran Students Association. 0 lPage Fifty-ninel . xg il QLQLQ H T1-2552.2 'E President . Vice-President . Secretary . Treasurer . . A Coach SCHAAKE this year fully demonstrated his ability as a football mentorg lt has been many years since a Bethany team has won such loyal support from the school, and Lindsborg as well, as have the Swedes of 1936. No Bethany squad since 1928 has inspired and so successfully maintained a positive school spirit. Outweighed nearly twenty pounds per man, the Swedes resorted to an aerial attack, which though it netted them more yardage and first downs, failed to produce the necessary winning touchdowns. Kearney won 19-7. Bethan , in the second ame, also nonfconference, won a stirrin battle from Bethel Y S g 14f6g but lost the first conference game 732 in a heartbreaking battle with Wesleyan, who finished in first lace. This was the onl conference Game that the Swedes lost. The P Y D passing of HlRISH,n Bethany's diminutive quarterback, kept the Coyotes guessing through- out the game. Twice the Swedes were halted on the verge of a touchdown, once on the five-yard line, again on the twelve. Bethany scored when a Coyote punter was forced to cover a bad pass from center behind his own goal line. Bethany next played a 6-6 tie with the Haskell Indians at Lawrence, on a muddy, slippery field. The Swedes outplayed Haskell decisively, ten first downs to two, 154 yards from scrimmage to 62, and S3 yards on passes to O. The game ended with the ball in Beth- any's possession on the Haskell two-yard line. ln the next two games the Swedes proved that they were composed of championship material. lPage Sixty-ninel 4 1 rj Ni' 'Gm L0 A ,Q 'gif rc., 4 Gulf ,, x WJ U Q, fr - X f gg: A-ar .2-.w.:.Mf-:.-.wJ.'y.4 1:4-.r.:.:., .
