English The goal of the English Department is to develop and maintain the ability to write clear and effective English. The department wants to guide students toward an increased understanding and critical appreciation of their liter- ary heritage, and help prepare them for graudate and professional study. The department also provides programs that prepare students for certification as teachers of English and Language Arts. The goal of the Education Depart- ment Is to develop a teacher who is a self-directing decision maker. He or she will recognize the need for per- sonal and professional growth, and has the skills necessary to pursue It. and is secure enough to engage In personal and professional self-evalu- ation. The teacher will recognize the needs of students and is able to meet those needs. Finally, the teach- er will have the skill and willingness to communicate, in the deepest sense of the word, with people of all ages and backgrounds. 26
