Text from Pages 1 - 216 of the 1978 volume:

We dedicate this year ' s Bethanian to Perry Gresham, President Emeritus, in appreciation for the use of his poem, A Ballad of Bethany, as our theme. 1978 BETHANIAN EDITOR: Mary Beth Miller ASSISTANT EDITOR: Billie Schrecker FACULTY ADVISOR: Ruth Westlake SECTION EDITORS Essay: Leslie Lomasson Activities: Scarlett Foster Clubs and Organizations: Patty Schodder Sports: |ohn Lau, Rich Meyer, Doug Pfendler FHousing: Valerie Bellofatto ARTIST: Frank Merryman PHOTOGRAPHERS: Lynn Nakashian, Doug Holmes, Moya Melnick, Barrie Lowman, William Fung, Steve Coe, Tamara Tormoh- len, Sarah Bunkley, Robyn Breithaupt, Kris- ten Cady, Chris Quinn, STAFF: Melissa Kearney, Chuck Nalbantian, Liz Stevens, Beth Cullis, Arden Rosfeld, Debbie Pyle, lonathan Lamb, Francis Matthews. BETHANY COLLEGE BETHANY, WEST VIRGINIA I sing the song of a college town Where learning is the theme The tlowers look up and the stars look down on conscripts of the dream The winding roads and the little place appear to some a bore B IΒ F ' y SSlh oHQ Bi_ K fc jM B C Bp F ' B l2H But quietude and a scholar ' s grace 10 Appeal to many more 11 12 13 With a I940 ' s theme, the 1977 Bethany Homecoming combined tloats, pa- rades, parties, concerts and locMball and soccer games to honor the akiinni of the World War II. The festivities started Friday afternoon with the soccer team defeating Wash- ington and lefferson, 8-0. The gridders did not tare so well as they were de- feated 14-7 by Allegheny. Brief rains before the game did not dampen the Homecoming spirit. Half time at the football game was highlighted by the crowning of senior Ann Adams as the 1977 Homecoming cjueen. Members of the classes of the I940 ' s were also introduced. Prior to the game, the first Alumni B Hall of Fame inductees were honored. The Alpha Sigma Phis and the Phi Mus won awards for the most thematic and original floats, respectively. But the Sig- ma Nu entry of a conehead float, patterned after the television show Saturday Night Live received the most attention. Entertainment for the weekend included a Friday night con- cert featuring the Ceils Band and the annual Saturday night dinner dance with the Lester Lanin Orchestra. I ' VE BEEN TO ALUMNI OF THE BETHANY HOMECOMING FORTIES HONORED 17 KLEIN AND CORN COMBINE The comedy of Robert Klein and the zany ragtime music of Your Father ' s Mustache com- bined for the Fall Parents ' Weekend entertain- ment. Klein captivated parents and students alike with his quick wit and improvisations. FHis topics included movies, shaking hands, physics of a water glass and the crowd favorite, Gresham Memorial Gymnasium. Prior to Klein, Your Father ' s Mustache filled the Field FHouse with ragtime favorites that had the crowd clapping and singing along. The weekend was rounded out by soccer, foot- ball and volleyball games. The sisters of Phi Mu Sorority held their annual Arts and Crafts Show in Alumni Lounge, featuring crafts made by the girls. 19 SING HELD MOTHER ' S DAY 20 Creek Sing, won by the Beta Theta Pi and Pi Beta Phi fraternity organizations, wound up the Spring Parents ' Weekend by hon- oring Mother ' s Day. The Betas captured top honors with a medley of songs from the 50 ' s. Props for the tunes included sunglasses and the casual look to add to the effect. The Pi Phis sang Look to the Rainbow and a tra- ditional sorority song. The Sigma Nus ended the sing with an assortment of costumes and songs ranging from When The Saints Go Marching In, to a solo of Miss Honey Bee. Rachel Long received the out- standing freshman woman award from the brothers of Phi Kappa Tau. k 21 SUN AND FUN FOR SPRING 22 Spring Weekend brought back alumni, picnics, concerts, a parade and a welcomed glimpse of the sun. The Weekend festivities started with the traditional picnic in the Coal Bowl. That night ended with a concert by the Star Spangled Wash- board Band (upper right). Saturday featured the third annual Perry Gresham Day. A parade honor- ing Dr. Gresham was complete with majorettes, floats and queens to highlight the celebration. Overland Express and Meisburg and Walters (op- posite, lower right) added musical flavor that night at the Field House. The last concert on Sunday, Kenny Rankin, was cancelled due to injury to Rankin at a previous concert. A student group, headed by Hal Hirsh, played instead for the crowd. 23 MAY MORNING May Morning featured an alumnus and trustee of Bethany as guest speaker for the annual event honoring the senior women. Mrs. Ann Wilkin Trombadore, of Bound Brook, N|, addressed the women of Bethany at the breakfast. Mrs. Trombadore, a native of Well- sburg, W. Va., is a member of the West Vir- ginia, New lersey and American Bar Associ- ations. The breakfast was opened with a prayer by senior )anet Long. Miss Long served as vice- president of Bethany ' s Panhellenic Council and chairman of the breakfast. Scarlett Foster was toastmistress as Outstanding junior Woman and president of Panhellenic Council. A fashion show, coordinated by Lynn Patterson and Lynn Nakashian and narrated by Tory Toll- ey, featured two women from each housing unit modeling their own clothes. 24 THE WORLD ' S A STAGE THE DUMB WAITER YOU CANT TAKE IT WITH YOU 25 HAY FEVER T R I A L B Y J U R Y T H E P R O P O S A L HARMFULNESS OF TOBACCO 26 THEATRE TOUTS TALENT The Bethany College Theatre provided a mix of serious, com- ical and musical productions to delight Bethany audiences during the 1977-78 season. The season began with Trial By |ury, a musical featuring a number of Bethany alumni. The Parents ' Weekend presenta- tion was You Can ' t Take It With You, with Tory Tolley and Michael Huskins as the parents. Another family play, Hay Fever, portrayed the wacky and bliss-less Bliss family with Fran McDormand and John Sayers as the heads of the crazy clan. Communications professor Mark Stevenson highlighted The Harmfulness of Tobacco, while Michael Fluskins, Beth Geis- mann and Peter Jensen performed The Proposal the same night. A night of one-act plays opened the spring semester. The Great Big Doorstep showed the dreams of a family that lived in a shack but had found their mansion doorstep in the nearby river. Tim Thompson and Lisa DeFuso held the leads. The season ended with Of Thee I sing, a musical about a presidential campaign with a platform of one word, Love. THE GREAT BIG DOORSTEP 27 CONCERTS SPAN STYLES The concerls il Bi ' thany started with the Homecoming ()erlormance by the Ceils Band (lower lett) and ended with an out- door concert the last weekend of s( hool by Kenny Rankin (opposite, upper lell) Kill semester, jazz musician Woody Herman (opposite, lower right) and the Atlanta KiiNthm Section (upper left). Your Father ' s Mustache entertained students and their parents on Fall Parents ' Weekend. Spring Weekend brought a rash of concerts to campus. The Star Spangled Washboard Band performed a combination of country, blue grass and rock here for the second time in three years. Overland Express (opposite, lower left) and M eisburg and Walters (lower right) were featured that Saturday night. 28 29 BIDS, BUDDIES AND BEER 30 Bid Day - one of the oddities of Beth- any. Between bids, tears, smiles, screams, laughter - and a lot of beer - the tension breaks and people are heard saying, Yes, he really did pledge there! It is a day mostly for celebra- tion - a few broken hearts do enter in the day of festivity, but they seem to get lost in the specialness of the occa- sion. Bid Day - one of the few days just for Creeks. Remember coming out of Phil- lips or Morlan, clutching a bid and searching frantically for those five members who were waiting anxiously too? And the houses become a beer bath of toasts and fraternity and sorori- ty cheers. Bid Day - try to explain it to someone who doesn ' t go to Bethany. It ' s one of those things where, I guess you had to be there. 31 FESTIVALS FURNISH FUN ' WK I rB B Festivals highlighting the regional flavor of the Arkansas Ozark Moun- tains and Barnesville, Ohio gave Bethany students the chance to taste cultures different from their own. The Ozark Festival featured a week- end of exhibitions of crafts, quilting and music, held in Irvin Gym. Satur- day and Sunday nights a concert was given by limmy Driftwood in Commencement Hall. Off-campus, some students traveled to Barnesville, Ohio the last week- end in September to witness the town ' s annual Pumpkin Festival. A parade, prizes for the largest pump- kin, tobacco chew and spit com- petitions were among the activities. The students also got to sample pumpkin flavored ice cream, dough- nuts, burgers, and of course, pump- kin pie. 32 LAST GASP GREETS SNOW Finally, a Snow Carnival! But with a different name. The renamed, long awaited Snow Carnival, now called the Last Gasp of Winter, provided students with a day off from classes and fun in the snow. Snow sculpture competition, won by the Phi Kappa Taus and the Zeta Tau Alphas, was held in front and behind Old Main. Tug of war contests took place between the women on campus while the men ' s housing units faced off in snow football. The day ' s events were ended with WVBC providing dance music at the barn. By any name, the Last Gasp gave the students a break from classes without having to get an excused absence. 33 WORLD RECORD SHATTERED Sj ly y 1 wK ' J MSKi t tX rm 1 KM marMi 1 ' t β–  H R l fc Sti y t Β§ k J iiK 9 C Rn It took 75 hours, 10 players, tennis shoes, shorts, shirts and socks and endless dedica- tion by players and volunteers alike. And when it was over the members of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity had broken the Guinness Book of World Records for the longest basketball game ever plaved. But more important, their time and contributions collected helped those in need at the St. Vincent ' s Children ' s Home in Wheeling, WV and the School of Bright Promise in Steubenville, Ohio. The marathon was the brainchild of co- chairmen Steve Chernickv and Ira larvis. The players, without substitution, were allowed a five-minute break every hour. They were allowed to accumulate the breaks so as to have time to take showers, eat and sleep. The game was played as close to an actual game situation as possible with witnesses independent of the fraternity verifying the game. An estimated crowd of 500 people saw the final hour of one of the most dramatic events at school. 34 35 1977-78 OFFICERS STUDENT BOARD OF GOVERNORS Leit to right: Diane Lewis - vice-president, Ray Homza - treasurer, Bitsy Hamilton - secretary, Mark Chernenko - president.
