Bethanian 1976 Bethany College Bethany, West Virginia This is Bethany College. Here, we had our own Bicentennial without the excuse of the 76 celebration. There were no surges of patriotism or flashes of red, white and blue; only the significant elements of revolution . . . Renovation — of Old Main, the Delta Tau Delta house and Cochran Hall; Reform — new I.D. cards, an interim president, probations, administrative re-assignmentS; Rotation — of classes, of professors and of fall, winter and spring. These seasons brought with them their own special spirit. Fall beckons us to Bethany. It offers newness; different experiences, strange faces, challenging courses, interesting roommates. There are those activities that belong only to fall — the Homecoming dance, football and soccer gomes and Halloween with the Phi Tau Greasers and the Phi Mu Boos. Yet prevalent in the minds of the upperclassmen is the thought that fall means there is one less year to go. jSSijaUiMffll - X  ■1 1 i 1 « i m F ' c ' M B 1 -v -i - ' - 1 1 ■l3 H g ' m 1 :«« ■■1 m fe. --SP-- ■i h f A ♦ ' .-. --n T w K I ■1 ' : • m % 1 . % HP _. :: . ,;, r. The first snowfall creates a wave of excitement; tfie last causes anxiety wfien it tfireatens to postpone the trip home. There is a shortage of trays at Slaters because they ore being used on the snow- covered hills. Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners mean finding five other people to eat with. Christmas carols chime from the Tower. Gowns and suits are finally brought out of closets for the long-awaited Christmas formals. Bid Day demands a decision which affects the course of the next three years. Like a snowfloke, these events are exclusive and unique. . ' ;;« Bethany is invigorated at the arrival of spring. Halter tops and shorts, baseball caps and tanktops are worn with o flair. Studying is done in the sun. Bicycles whiz past on the street. Sororities and fraternities hold their annual weekends. Greek Sing raises speculation as to what the Sigma Nus will do this time. Honors Day recognizes dedicated students; May Morning Breakfast toasts senior women. Commencement causes conflicting feelings among the graduates . . . relief and satisfaction with the transfer of the tassel; nostalgia; apprehension of the future; the sad realization that we may never pass this way again. 10 11 $ ? Wake Addresses Convocation On November 20, 1975 Bethany College welcomed its new interim president, Dr. Orville Woke, at a formal convocation. He was introduced by Dr. Perry Gresham, chairman of the Bethany College Board of Trustees. Attending the event were trustees, department chairmen, administrative heads and students from fraternities, sororities and independent housing units. Dr. Wake addressed the college on goals he wishes to achieve during his interim period. Dr. Kenney awarded scholastic achievement awards to the housing units that displayed the highest grade point average for the Spring of 1975. The W. Kirk Woolery Award went to McEochern and the Anno Ruth Bourne Award went to Goodnight. Orville Woke, Interim President, expresses his gools for Bethany. 18 Robert Sandercox wishes Dr. Wake a successful year. Dr. Gresham speaks at convocation. 19 JESSE COLIN YOUNG One of the many weekend concerts at Bethany. 20 Parent ' s Weekend Jose Feliciano Concert Parent ' s Weekend at Bethany took place on the weekend of October 24 through the 26. The highlights of this weekend were a Saturday afternoon football game against Hiram College with Bethany victorious. Saturday evening a special banquet dinner was held in honor of the parents, followed by the Jose Feliciano Concert. 21 Fall Productions Of Mice and Men, directed by David Judy, was presented during Freshman Orientation Week in September. John Steinbeck ' s naturalistic drama centered on two California migrant workers during the depression. They had one dream — to establish a home together. David Judy directed The Great God Brown during Parents Weekend in October. Eugene O ' Neill ' s expressionistic drama focused on the conflicts of the corporate man and the artist. The use of masks to hide true feelings was central to the ploy. Of Mice and Men 22 Great God Brown . . . 23 Cat on a Hot Tin Roof 24 Tennessee Williams ' classic. Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, was directed by Bonnie Monte as her senior project in November. The Pulitizer Prize winning drama dealt with the greed, frustration, and guilt of a wealthy Southern family. The family was forced to face unwanted truth in one explosive evening. Lanford Wilson ' s bittersweet play, Hot ' L Baltimore, was directed by Seth Golbey as his senior project in December. The play centered on the residents of a run- down hotel scheduled for demolition. Its destruction mirrors the decline of the American city. Hot ' L Baltimore 25 Preparing to run down the field, Bill Lisotto takes a hand-off from Steve Sekelik. Quarterback Steve Sekelik and Coach Don Ault confer on strategy as the offense prepares to go in. Bethany was 4-1 in the PAC and 5-4 overall before the deciding game against Washington and Jefferson. Going into the Homecoming game, Bethany was 1-3, with the one victory over Case-Western Reserve. The Homecoming match against Thiel wasn ' t decided until the last 10 seconds. The Bisons scored 10 points in the final 87 seconds to win 10-7. A 26 yard field goo! by Bob Williams with under 10 seconds left to ploy, clenched the victory. Two wins against Carnegie-Mellon and Hiram followed giving the Bisons top spot in the conference. Going into the final game, both Bethany and W J were 4-1 and tied for first place. The Bisons overcame the W J home field advantage and scored in less than five minutes into the game. They never trailed again as they went on their way to win the school ' s first football crown since 1966. Tough defense and a superb running gome put the Bisons on top. In addition to winning the PAC championship, Bethany put three members on the All-Conference line-up — Bob Williams, Mike Bilica and Carl Clemens. PAC All-Conference member Bob Williams kicks a field goal as on opposing team member runs in to block it. Brad Townsend fakes a large step as he prepares to kick to a team mate. For the first time in five years, the Bethany soccer team did not capture the PAC crown. The Bisons tied with Hiram for second place with a 4-1-1 conference record. Overall they were 4-4-1. The team hod a perfect record in the PAC until they dropped 2-1 to Allegheny. It was only the second loss to a PAC team in five years for the Bisons. Two close losses followed against W.Va. Wesleyan and Alderson-Broaddus. The A-B game was marred by a controversial call. There was question as to whether the ball hit the outside of the net and bounced out of play or went into the cage and rolled through a hole in the net. A 0-0 stand-off with Hiram ended the Bison ' s five year PAC reign. Keith Cowin dribbles past a PAC adversary en route to the goal. 30 Covered with mud, Danny Dunmyer slaps his arms with disgust over a bad call in the Alderson-Broaddus game. He was 83 years old. Dr. Cramblet received his bachelor ' s and master ' s degrees from Bethany in 1910. In 1917 he began teaching mathematics here. Subsequently he served as dean of liberal arts and science during 1918-20 and treasurer during 1919. In 1934 he was inaugurated the 11th president of the College, a post which he held until 1952. 48 Mr. James Sawtell, assistant professor of biology died on Monday, March 1, 1976. He was 49 years old. He was very mucfi a part of Bethany. It was his place to work and to live. He seemed to be always around: in his office until late at night, in his little red car, and at meals sitting with faculty and friends. Academically and personally, Mr. Sawtell helped his students and friends. But we ore grateful for more than that. We had the opportunity to know this complex man. Mr. Sawtell is missed. His office needs a professor, his apartment needs an occupant, and we need our friend. 49 ■Mt ■' • ■• '  ' ■' - 5t!aiS ' V. w ■■1 l ? ' 1 1 H M H H mm K M H H K %. J 1 ■w 1 H ■1 . Freshman received their bids in Morlan and Phillips Halls. Outside representatives from the 12 Greek houses waited to take the pledges back to new brothers and sisters. T ' 62 63 The situation on the hill changed a little this year. Members of IFC, Pan- Hell and the administration met several times to come up with a new Bid Day procedure to deal with the problems that have arisen in the past. Box lunches were sent to all Greek houses; traffic was prohibited on the hill and only five members from each fraternity and sorority were allowed to greet the pledges. Despite these rules, the excitement of the day ran as high as any year. Pledges ran from Morion and Phillips to meet the people outside before going out to the houses for pledge ceremonies and parties. 64 65 Out on the hills and downtown, Greeks waited for their new pledges to return from receiving bids. Songs were shouted, beer flowed and members from each house mingled with each other. Weeks of Rush and preferential parties were finally over. 66 67 WVBC Radio Airs Tenth Year WVBC-FM radio celebrated its 10th anniversary on February 11th. Direc- tor Ted Burrows and Student Direc- tor Alan Furst welcomed guests to an Open FHouse in the station ' s studios. Interim President Dr. Orville W. Wake and Mayor Joseph Kurey presented letters of commendation to the station and its staff on behalf of the college and the town. The radio station provides ample op- portunity for every student to gain experience in air writing, production, and broadcasting. 68 WVBC-TV3 Builds up to Daily Cable Programming Bethany ' s electronic media ex- panded by one more outlet this year with the addition of WVBC-TV, Pro- gramming began on February 1 1 on channel 3. Shows aired live each day and video-tapes continued until 11:00. The format included a mixture of news, features, interviews and light entertainment. A special favorite of the students was the quiz show That ' s Not Right, You Dummy. The show featured various college hous- ing groups competing to answer trivia questions. The television studio in Steinman Hall is operated by stu- dent volunteers and Television Pro- gramming classes. Bill Shimer was the Director. Despite inexperience and little equipment, the station re- mains a great innovation in Bethany communications. 69 Bison Basketball Finishes 8-12, Wilson Hits 1002 Front (l-r): Deno Emili, Fran Haus, Sam DeBone, Ken Toth, Armond Notili, John Symonski, Robin Sichina, Rusty Shoof.
