We didn ' t see him around too often, except at convocations, for- mal functions, and an occasional football game. Even though he wasn ' t always in Bethany. his presence was felt. He had our respect. He was the chief. The boss. The grand old man. Illness kept him from our sight often during our stay here. His absences, though, made our contacts with him that much more memorable. Who could forget him at convocations— the master speaker with an anecdote for every oc- casion and the God-given ability to hold an audience in the palm of his hand. Bethany as we know it was not the Bethany he knew when he arrived here. Our Bethany is bigger. The enrollment and the physical plant nearly tripled in size since 1953, his first year as president of Bethany College. I don ' t claim any credit for these improve- ments, he would say. I just happened to be here when they came about. He shouldn ' t have been so modest. Bethany is what it is today because of the com- bination of vision, pragmatism, and charm he exhibited in fulfilling his presidential duties. We thank Perry Epler Gresham for serving us with the wisdom of his age and the spirit of his youth. Watkins, R. Foster, L. Wil- neke, D. Sauer, D. Ault, A. Applin, B. Riley, B. Goin. It was a frustrating year for Bob Goin ' s varsity football team. Goin, who has had con- sistently winning seasons as gridiron boss, saw his 1971 team win only three of nine decisions. Bison wins came against Thiel, Case Reserve and the College of Steuben- ville. Bethany finished 2-3 in the league tied for fourth place. John Carroll won the conference crown by winning four of five PAC games. Freshman Russ Foster led the Green and White in total of- fense with 593 yards. Junior Demrey Brandon had another good season rambling for 586 yards on the ground. He scored seven touchdowns to lead the team. Football Team Wins Three AS Soccer Squad Remains King of PA C Members of the 1971 soccer squad: first row, left to right: F. Kurz, K. Bawuah, T. The soccer squad went undefeated in PAC ac- tion and became champs for the second consecutive year. 66 Bethany had one of its best cross country seasons in his- tory as they finished their dual meet season with a 5-2 record. The Bisons narrowly beat Allegheny to win the crown. Bisons who took firsts in the final meet were Mor- rissey (two), Brunson and Siconolfi. The 400 yard med- ley relay team was also vic- torious. During the regular season, Bethany won 11 of 13 dual meets as a prelude to the league title. 68 Members of the 1971-72 swimming team: first row. left to right: D. Nicholson, K. Davis, D. Olney, B. Weaver, J. B. Ali, J. Paolo. Bright spots were few and far between for the 1971-72 basketball team that won only five of 21 games under the di- rection of first year Coach Dave Sauer. Bethany finished tied for fourth in the league with a 4-8 record. Freshman Jim Schmitt led Bethany in scoring with 302 points and a 14.4 average. Junior Randy Fox was second with 274 points and a 13.1 average. Fox made the second team on the all conference squad. 71 Wrestlers Take Sixth In PACs The Bison wrestling team had its finest season ever by posting a 5-9 regular season record. However, they placed sixth in the conference cham- pionship meet. Jeff Stoltz took a third by winning in the championship consolation in the 142 pound class. Case Western Re- serve won the tourney. 76 Golfers Have Long, Hard Season Bethany ' s golf team suf- fered one of its worst seasons ever as the linksmen managed only one victory in 12 matches.
