It was a year of moon walks and countless marches. Astronauts took steps for mankind while moratorium supporters stepped for peace. Voices of dissent were heard everywhere and the silent majority grew louder. American flogs and peace symbols hung together from windows and from the bumpers of cars. And somehow, Bethany was right there, caught up with everything, and at the same time, so far removed. We were allowed and encouraged to reach outside and grow and develop, to become worldly and wise. We were able to find new horizons and share new ideas. And yet we were also permitted and often urged, to stay within our brick walls and reap the peace and solitude and comfort they afforded. Some of us went to extremes; we became only worldly or we stayed only comfortable. And some of us were fortunate enough to shore the two. Bethanians ore sensitive people faced with infinite opportunities and boundless possibilities. To present on paper everything that these people represent and all that Bethany is, would be on impossible task. This book con only attempt to capture the mood and being of Bethany and its people. And it is dedicated to every student, faculty member, and administrator that mokes Bethany the very special place that it is. Quiet conversations And familiar surroundings . . . Often provide the tranquility needed during the academic year. .i :: )L. Friendship And the intermingling with others often provide a break from the tranquility. 10 II 12 13 14 And yet, always, there is a time for aloneness. A time to explore and to understand. 16 A time to know one ' s self. 17 18 v J : 1 H ■ S PB 4 m HJ ?« ' - v) ifl 19 20 «4-««  , jjyfw . pM K M 1 1 1 1 1 r 4 1 ll 1 1 L 1 m -....mSi 1 L ' ' : - . Wide- spread alumni and student porticipation made this year ' s September weekend the most successful yet. Donna Wood, Mary Eyman, Janet Pond, Sandra Jac- quin and Joanne Putnam were the nominees for Home- coming Queen. Miss Putnam (left) received the honor. Although the weather was dismal, spirits were kept high by fra- ternity and sorority open houses and the spirits they served their guests (upper right). 70 71 Our College Community The Components 72 A campus is not merely a conglomeration of buildi ngs and textbooks. It is something more; it is people — people whose individual lives interlock for a fev hours each day and give the campus its living, breathing soul. Bethany is one such campus. Its isolation from the bustling city and its small yet select enrollment foster intermingling with one another. The differentiation between academic status is practically negligible. Freshman or Senior — each is an integral component of the Bethany College Community. 73 College Is not only an interlocking of thoughts and emotion. It is foremost an institution of higher learning where the student is both academi- cally and culturally enriched. The Convocation Program at Bethany is designed to fulfill this multifaceted need for enrichment. Accordingly, programs this past year ranged from Senator Packwood ' s lecture (right) during the Earth Day Conference to Eleanor Steber ' s recit- al at the dedication of Steinman Hall (far right). 74 75 y r % n .A ' t y The Pan Hellenic and Inter Fraternity Councils intro- duced second semester rush this year. Opinions as to the worthiness of this innovation were varied, but full pledge classes indicated that the second semes- ter rush program is equally as effective as the for- mer system had been in previous years. 76 77 78 ♦. p l m f 1 ■T H 1 - ' ' J B 1 ' %wtf1 M I m IP V)S mm The Alpha Sigma Phi ' s (top) and the Pi Beta Phi ' s (above) share their happiness with their new pledges. Soul, hard rock, rhythm and blues, easy listening and folk music were all accounted for in the scheduling of groups. This year ' s theme taken from Italy resulted in toga-like dress and a festive Roman gala. As is customary, a king and queen were selected by the students from the many nominees. Mike Kaufman (below). Kappa Delta nominee, was honored as King while Georgianna Nanni, Woolery House nominee, was bestowed with the title of Spring Carni- val Queen. 88 til P5sr yiiA w_ 1 1-- 4S ■ K: ; .fl|  r; ' ' i v- y r - THE If ■lilies mm 90 91 92 And as the Weekend Continued 93 Greek Sin 94 Greek Sing was given its usual place of prominence on Mother ' s Day, Sunday, May 1 0, 1 970. With the onset of this school year the era of PEACE, LOVE and FLOWERS came into full swing. Whether evidenced by a simple smile (lower left) or by a mass demonstration for peace (left), the motive was often the same: a desire for freedom of expression. This freedom was virtually uninhibit- ed by Bethany College administration and resulted in the eventual liberalization of College policies while maintaining College ideals and principles. 103 104 ros X: _ -f ' «i iSiS S i ' -i - •J .
