But one remembrance will transcend all the many intimate recollec- tions that a collegian clings to. This re- membrance, infinitely more important than the others, will recall to Bethanians the year of 1969 when Bethany Col- lege matured because its students chose it to. The remembrance of the year when individuality did not necessarily have to be prefixed with Greek letters; The remembrance of the year when Trustees, Administrators, Faculty, and Alumni agreed that Bethany could wet her feet in the stream of progress and enter the ranks of the ' conservatively liberal ' ; and, finally and most impor- tantly, the remembrance of the year when respect, admiration, and attentive- ness were accorded to the growing number of students who chose to end their silence and speak out. The Beth- anian for 1969, then, is a record of the re-awakening of individuality at Bethany College. Whether it be the symbolic van- tage point achieved by Judy Royce on Jeff Andrews ' shoulders (right) or a group of individuals in interaction on the way to class or in a card game fop- pos te page), 1 969 amounts to the same thing— individuals in intellectual pur- suit of themselves and others. ■■ HITB ' H ' F- The traditional activities and events were again present and available this year to any Bethanian who wished to become involved. From sorority rush to self-expression in music, 1969 in Bethany retained an aura of sanity about it amidst a mad, mad year when politicians, theologians, and philo- sophers tried to explain the merits and demerits of student protests and undeclared wars. The year 1969 was an academic year. The T. W. Phillips Memorial Library offered the necessary references and Bethanians, more often than not, supplied the rest. When the ' enclosure syndrome ' struck, the library was abandoned and the campus itself became an all encompassing study environment— a wide open space in which to sketch, ponder, and, perhaps, prophesy. For everything there is a season and a time for every matter under heaven: . a time to weep, and a time to laugh . a time to seek, and a time to lose . a time to rend, and a time to sew . a time to love, and a time to hate . a time for war, and a time for peace ... And so it was in 1 969. . . ' -,- -i ' r! ,- TjUSTAHEADj BROASTED «•• ' w - : : 7 :tefi W JIN CHICKEN BREEZY HEIGHTS II , t ' A ' 1. This year, the annual song competition wound up Spring Festival ac- tivities with music. Each organization had been practicing their entries for weeks be- fore the May 1 1 deadline, choosing their music from the oldies as well as the lists of current favorities. 146 H Pl r The winners of this year ' s Greek Sing were the Kappa Delta sorority directed by Sally Hill, and the Beta Theta Pi fraternity, led by Frank Gomez. H 1 mS S Dr. Gresham and Mr. Losier listen to opinions on the role of the public servant. Senator Proxmire speaks to Bethanians on Rights in Conflict. When describing Bethany ' s past cultural year, it is notable to say that this was the year of excellent programs, speakers who were experts in their fields, and discussions in which many more students than usual participated. 151 Tutoria Every Saturday, a few Bethany students roll themselves out of bed at an ungodly 8:00, journey down the hill, and wait— wait for a van load of children, gathered fronn back roads and rural shanties around Bethany, for a few hours of exposure with the out- side world. These students play with these children, swim with them, help them make papier-mache puppet heads. Sometimes, they just talk to them. And surprisingly enough, in a world of young people who want something for nothing, these Bethan- ians do this for free. Other Bethany students give up a Saturday afternoon, give up sleeping, or going to a football game, or going swimming to travel into Wheeling, not to shop, but to spend some time with kids of all ages who are a few dollars less fortunate than they are. These Bethanians organize group games, crafts, and activities; plan picnics outside Wheeling ' s smelly and confining limits. Or a student will share a dream with some little dreamer, or maybe discuss a problem that is just too weighty for one small human to handle. For their hours and their understanding, these Bethanians get only a warm feeling. 152 •- it f - . Program This year, Bethany ' s tutorial program in- itiated some new ideas into the program. The newest of these was a field trip for sixty some youngsters from the Vineyard Hills section of Wheeling, to the Laurelview Christian Training Camp in the Laurel Moun- tains of Pennsylvania. The weekend camp- ing trip was a success in that the children had fun in different surroundings. 153 154 155 156 157 158 159 160 161 162 163 % t v;. £l Drama But there is always the next show . . . The excitement wanes following the presentation of a show. The actors and actresses dread the moments of unwinding, disrobing, unmasking make-up removal. Back stage in the midst of cold cream and alcohol, congratulations and roses you find the people again. When the last echo of applause has ceased when the audience rises to leave the theater a cold shell with recent memories, there is nothing left to do but clean up and leave. The cast and crew cling to each other, linger together for as long as time allows, to relive the night ' s abruptly obsolete excitement. The chemistry of comradery developed during the production of a play can fill to the point of satisfaction the need for belonging, the sharing of feeling, and the desire for self expression. Sadly, the com- pounds are never the same. The atmosphere for every play changes, and so the people. The same elusive magical intensity can never be recreated, for the elements of the microcosm are in constant flux. But there is always the next show. Coleen AA. DUNN 224 SPORTS A combination of injuries breaks, and bad luck limited the Bison gridders to a 4-4 slate. With a wealth of talent avail- able, the team swamped Case 69-14 in their opener. In a close and wild game, the Bisons dropped a 29-24 decision to Al- legheny after holding a 17-0 lead at half time. Facing next a defensive minded, nationally ranked Westminster squad, the Bisons dropped a heart-breaker, 20-7. After losing to a big John Carroll team 22-13, 56 points was more than enough to defeat the W J Presidents. The season ended on a low note due to a 1 0-7 loss to Grove City. : - .« ' r tik 228 Soccer The newest intercollegiate sport, at Bethany, soccer, be- came one of the most popu- lar. Coach John Cunning- ham ' s booters came within one game of winning the PAC crown. It all started with a home opener against defending champion Case Tech. The ex- perienced Case squad was overwhelming favorites, but the undaunted Bisons never gave up and finally won the game, 3-2. In the next four games, the booters stumbled three times with the sole victory over AAt. Union. Since all four were non-conference, the record for the PAC crown was un- blemished. But hopes for the crown went down the drain with a 4-3 setback to Adel- bert. After successive vic- tories over John Carroll and Allegheny, the squad felt they themselves too late. Both games assured the team of a second place in their first official year in the PAC. 229 iSfsmsi ' ' - i ::: 5aL iffi:XSSk.-:S.i ii; ' i- Scores Bethany 2 Case Tech 1 Bethany 2 Slippery Rock 3 Bethany 1 Morris Harvey 2 Bethany 4 Mt. The young harriers, led by Coach Tom Grail, finished the 1968 campaign with a 3 win, 4 loss mark and finished a re- spectable fourth in the PAC championships. Freshman John Hubbard was a big surprise for the Bisons as he added a tremendous boost to the squad. Other strong runners includ- ed Jim Liddle, Bob Turner, Ken Swindler, Bill Jarman, and Chuck Sheib. Compiling a dismal 4-14 record, first year mentor Tom Allen ' s squad fought hard and lost seven games by less than ten points and three of those were by two or less. The Bisons, starting a small and inexperienced team, started the season on an optimistic note with a decisive victory over the eventual conference champs, W J. The cagers then split the next two games, beating Adel- bert and losing to Muskingum, then went on to drop 13 out of the next 14 games. The sole vic- tory was at the expense of John Carroll. The season ended on a happy note with a victory over Allegheny. The team was led by senior cap- tain, AAike Nevitt and junior Jack Kostur, both guards and both averaged over 20 points a game. Nevitt had the season high with 37 points against W J. Harry Bourdeau, the 6-7 center, was a much improved player and led the conference in rebounds. 232 Bethany 76 W J 66 Bethany 54 Muskingum 62 w Bethany 87 Adelbert 69 Bethany 68 Case 69 ' Bethany 58 Marietta 89 Bethany 64 Adelbert 89 Bethany 75 Case 78 Bethany 72 Wheeling 77 Bethany 94 John Carroll 88 Bethany 69 Allegheny 74 Bethany 89 Wheeling 91 Bethany 75 MacMurray 97 Bethany 51 Thiel 60 Bethany 80 John Carroll 82 Bethany 74 W J 93 Bethany 67 Thiel 78 Bethany 61 Allegheny 50 r n 1 h ' T. mim ■f — -« ■■ f Swimming il«« -ttttKfftetta ' ' -4 ' ' l9P « •  a • « .T •w Coach Tom Grail ' s mermen were im- pressive to say the least. The cre- dentials of the team were almost limitless as they swept through twelve of fourteen meets and de- stroyed the conference in the PAC Meet held at John J. Knight nata- torium. Impressive victories over WVU and Miami highlighted the season. The only two setbacks came to the hands of nationally ranked East Carolina and a fluke loss to Youngstown. The PAC ' s were a mere formal- ity as the mermen took first in all events except one and sec- ond in all but two and swept the meet handily. After much preparation the Bi- sons went to Chicago for the NAIA national meet. But through much stronger competi- tion, the gallant swimmers fin- ished in a tie for sixth place. Led by Gary Pitman and Tony Wieshner, the team was rarely overpowered, yet it seemed that all the grapplers could not put a good match together. An opening victory over and a mid- season triumph over Alderson-Brod- dus provided the Green with their only two victories of the campaign. Being an individual sport, the suc- cess of the squad was measured in the accomplishments of the single wrestler. Besides Pitman and Weish- ner, outstanding performances were put in by Chuck McCarthy, Tom Maggi, Jim St. Clair, Heavyweight Bob Uhl, Paul Leiblich, Bill Taczak, Jay DiMarco, and Gerry Keeler. Coach Knight ' s squad, led by Terry Coffield, fin- ished 5th in the conference match. After losing the first four match- es to Thiel, W J, John Carroll, and Carnegie-Mellon, the cup- sters won the next three out of four with victories over Case, Allegheny, and Grove City sand- wiched around a loss to W J. Due to a young team, the Bisons should be a conference threat in the next few seasons. 236 Track 237 t The 1 969 version of Bethany ' s track team was a winless one. First year coach Tom Allen ' s premier effort with the young squad was quite frustrating. It appeared that the talent was there but the depth wasn ' t due to an entirely undermanned squad. With overwhelming defeats from Grove City, Carnegie-Mellon, and Case, the rest of the thinclad losses were close enough to point out the lack of participants for the Bisons. The closest that Allen ' s men came to a victory was with Adelbert, which was lost onh, ate in the meet. Fine individual efforts came from pole vaulter Jim St. Clair as he took the Bison ' s only first place in the PAC meet. Also excelling were freshman javelin thrower Brian Heuer and high jumper Bud Scrog- gins. With opening victories over Fairmont and Mt. Union, it seemed like another premiere year for the netmen. But the tide turned quickly as four straight losses to W J, Case, Adelbert, and Car- negie-Mellon, set a solemn tone to the squad. A victory over down-state Morris Harvey saved the skein and team went on to tie Grove City and lose the finale to John Carroll. The number one player on the squad was Carol Hunter, who had an outstanding year on the courts in both singles and dou- bles. Baseball Bethany ' s young, strong base- ball team waded through an up and down season ending on the upward swing. The team fin- ished the year with an impres- sive 10-5 won-lost slate. Coach Bob Coin ' s men had high hopes of winning the conference due to an experienced infield and strong pitching and catch- ing. After winning the first two games over Thiel and Steuben- ville, the Bisons ' hopes for the title were all but crushed due to a doubleheader loss to the hands of W J. But, the Bisons stormed back and won the next four out of five games. The surging bats and strong-armed pitchers were now getting down to business. Ed LaBorde and Denny Robinson were the unbeatable battery and the hitting of LaBorde, Jack Kos- tur, and Manny Markos led the way. The toll of so many double- headers was beginning to show as the Bisons split two twin bills with Case and Thiel. The season ended on a strong note with a 4-3 decision over Adelbert. Of the starting nine The Big Green will only lose leftfielder, AAullins. 240 Scores Bethany 4 Thiel 2 Bethany 11 Steubenville 1 Bethany 2(2) W J 6(8) Bethany 13 Steubenville 2 Bethany 3 Case 1 Bethany 11 AAt.
