BETHANY ' S LANDMARK CONTENTS FACULTY STUDENTS ACTIVITIES SPORTS , 11 THE PRESIDENT SPEAKS Dr. W. H. Cramblet, President Bethany College Bethany, W. Vo. ' PREXY We are pleased to extend greetings to the members of the student body of Bethany College. This includes those who came here of their own free choice and those who were sent here by the Bureau of Naval Personnel. We hope that all of you will find your exper- iences at Bethany pleasant and pro- fitable and that you will regard Beth- any with love and affection as your Alma Mater. We wish to assure those who may not be allowed to complete their training before being called to other tasks that we at the college will cooperate in every way to help them complete their program of education. The LOG is a record of that interesting period at Bethany when the Navy was on board with us or should we say when we were on board with the Navy. We want to congratulate the staff of this publication and express the hope that as you look at it in years to come you will recall with pleasure and satisfaction the time you spent at Old Bethany , and join with us as we sing We ' ll honor and crown Thee, O Bright Alma Mater For thou art the regent of our des- tiny. Sincerely Yours, , ident 12 DEAN WEIMER Bernal R. Weimer, Dean of Facul- ty, is what the sign on his office door says, but Dean Weimer is much more to Bethany than that. He is head of the Biology department, punster su- perlative, and gardener de-luxe. His pet hobby at the present time, is the Bethany Band. He has worked untir- ingly to build this into the fine musical organization it now is. Dean Weimer is co-author of several Biology books and manuels, and is the man behind the witty and amusing collection of Bi-illogical poems . . . Dean Weimer, just by being his own unconventional self has become one of Bethany ' s most outstanding personages. DEAN HOAGLAND Dean of Women, Head of the Eng- lish Department. At the present time she is studying the finer points of the art of becoming a veterinarian under the more or less able instruction of Dr. Mahan. Miss Hoagland is without a doubt one of the busiest people in Bethany. Running the English department is a job that would leave an ordinary per- son hopelessly muddled, but besides that, she solves problems, and acts as general trouble-shooter for Bethany ' s 125 women students. She is also fac- ulty advisor for the Student Guides, and an active participant in the Royal Order of the Red Rose. 13 THE COMMANDING OFFICER ' S MESSAGE Lt. G. J. Longley, USNR Commanding Officer Navy V-12 Unit Befhany College Bethany, W. Va. In all walks of life there are those who command our respect, regardless of their rank and position, because they possess the qualities of inspiring, cap- able and efficient leaders. Lt. Longtey is one of such men, and has gained the respect, admiration and good will of all the personnel under his command. Under such leaders is brought forth the spirit of which the Navy is very proud— the Esprit-des-Corps . C. O. U. S. Navy V-12 Unit Bethany College Bethany, W. Va. From: The Commanding Officer To: All Hands Subj: Message to V-12 Trainees 1. Now that some of you have completed your tour of duty at the Navy V-12 Unit, Bethany College, you will be assigned to fur- ther duty under instruction at other naval sta- tions. During your stay here you have ac- quired some knowledge, you have made many friends and you have impressed this command with your earnestness and ability. With sin- cere unselfish service in the U. S. Navy as your goal, successful careers as officers will be your reward. 2. To those of you who are shipping out in October may I say it has been a pleasure to have served with you and I wish you all the very best of luck . 3. I am looking forward to the continued good cooperation of the men returning in No- vember. G. J. Longley. 14 NAVAL ADMINISTRATION Naval Administration, in Bethany language, equals one of the smoothest- running organizations on the campus . . . There ' s Lt. Beneficial in the sense than many athletic minded boys were brought to the college by the V- 1 2 Program, and also because physical fitness is being stressed in all V- 1 2 colleges; detrimental due to the transportation shortage and the inability to obtain necessary equipment. Intramural sports have been played practically the year around start- ing out with volley ball and swimming, and terminating with football, soft- ball and basketball. The summer ' s offerings were golf, horse shoes, tennis, Softball and football. Platoon B-3 took possession of the intramural cup at the close of the third semester with 568 points with A- 1 running second with 455 points. So far this semester A- 1 is leading the field for possession of the cup. To have this trophy has been the hope and aspiration of every platoon since the beginning of intramural sports. Softball in the latter part of the season turned out to be the most popular sport with many participating and even more spectating. The high light of the season was the game between A- 1 and the Faculty as both teams were fighting for the championship. The Faculty, as usual, dominated the field and emerged victors with the count of 4-1. Chief Max was the winning pitcher and he also followed through with two impressive hits. Tennis in Bethany this last semester enjoyed a fairly active season. There was a good deal of individual play and the tournament conducted by the Physical Education Department was greeted with much enthusiasm. There were 32 entrants in the singles and 16 teams in the doubles. The singles was completely dominated by Dave Brown. He met little opposition, sweeping through to the finals where he defeated Hofer. The doubles crown was captured by the same Dave Brown and Rudy F ofer who defeated Eskey and Schreiber in the finals. These results gave A-2 first place in both doubles and singles. CLANG, another ringer. Some mighty fine contests were put on in the horse shoe pits by Burford, Chief Max and Skidmore. Burford easily won the single ' s championship while Max and Skidmore defeated Burford and Fithian in the double ' s playoff. In the third semester Burford and Doolittle were victorious in nine straight contests — defeating all eight platoons and the Faculty. 98 Softball — Back row: L. to R. — Altemus, Chetlin, Roder, Buck, Cohen, Hoffman, and Poulson Front row: Prestier, Damrau, Madden, Dorsey, Jones, Frondorf, and Plough Tennis — Brown and Hofer Horseshoes — Max, Skidmore, and Burford 99 mm . ,v. jmiip Pllp :-  «Wg rf! )i5flr; Fv K? ? FOOTBALL Football is now in season for both inter-platoon competition and the varsity. The inter-platoon competition is strong and the ruggedness of these tag football games is shown by the many minor casualties. Varsity boll is well along in the practice season and the opening game is to be played September 30th against Dennison U, at Dennison. Perhaps the game most looked forward to is the Pitt game, October 7th, at Pitt, where the Bison will try to avenge the defeat it suff ered last year at the hands of the Panthers. This promises to be one of the best games ever played between a large and small school. There are about 86 boys out for varsity ball and for once Coach Knight has a wealth of material to choose from. No definite first string has yet been picked, but at present it looks as if Bethany will have two or three first string elevens. Coach Knight is well pleased with the outlook of the coming season and we sincerely hope Bethany ' s Old man of football will be able to look back on this season ' s record with pride. ••• • -i P •? ra I. «ii HL J 101 Roster of Bethany College Students (Navy and Civilian) Agrophiotis, Arthur, 316 Coltort Ave., Pittsburgh, Pa.
