Bethany is different. You can feel it when you 're watching for winningj a soccer game or burning your hands on a stupid rope or talking to your favorite teacher fas a personj or experiencing a chapel that makes you stay awake. C Just knowing that when this many people believe in Bethany it's got to be good! Ten car washes and ten bake sales were manned in Goshen, Elkhart, and the surrounding communities. Mothers, girls, and the home ec classes had been busy making . . . cakes, cookies, brownies, noodles, and pies .... crews of students were sent out to do any kind of work for people who had called in and asked for them. Saturday was the big day at the school with a rummage sale, a chicken bar-b-que ,... and a huge auction. Together we discovered that Bethany is well worth 340,500 of hard work. This is done by encouraging students to maintain a respect for and a reliance upon the Bible as God's uniquely inspired communication to man and by guiding students to a fuller knowledge of, and faith in, the Biblical message. Each stu- dent is required to study a Bible course each year that he is in attendance at Bethany. Students involved in Bible study at Bethany Christian this year have the opportunity to study Biblical materials and related life issues with the individual or small group study approach. Courses are offered in Christian Family Living, Jeremiah and Esphesians, Genesis and Mark, Intro- duction to the Chrisian Faith, and Bible Seminar. In the Bible Seminar classes students help determine the content of the course. The Bible faculty, Darrel Hostetler and Jim Derstine, help students become acquainted with the content of the Bible in a way which has scholastic integrity. As students become acquainted with the Biblical message, they are helped in the process of thinking through the options and questions of life which all persons face. The Mennonite Church is a Free Church which has grown out of the Anabaptist movement. Bethany Christian attempts to remain faithful to the New Testament theologi- cal concepts ofthe church. This means that the Bible facul- ty of Bethany Christian are firmly committed to Christian discipleship and deeply believe that fullness of life and meaning can be found only in Jesus Christ. Bethany Christ- ian is not ashamed of this stance, nevertheless, it is rec- ognized that each person must make his own voluntary choice regarding his relationship to the Christian Church and to Jesus Christ. Bethany's task is to make Jesus Christ a real and attractive option for each student. L, 'liu-1 In the game of basketball, the give and gon play is executed. Life's big play is the give and take. The give and take play is put into use at Bethany. Bethany's uniqueness lies in the interplay between students expounding while the faculty listen, and faculty talking while students listen. Giving and taking must be a two-way street. Along this line, too, is the concept of car- ing, sharing, and being concerned. Faculty members are con- cerned about students as persons, individuals. Students need to feel a kind of security in this settingg a freedom to share with each other and with the faculty. Both students and teachers have hearts, minds, and feelings. Each is a unique individual who sympathizes and empathizes. Yes, that's me . . . all the way from Jamaica! At first I found it a bit hard to adjust to the American way of life which was a little different than what I was ac- customed to. Luckily for me, we speak English in Jamai- ca, and so it was much easier in that respect for me. One of my major problems was saying Mom and Dad to my new parents. It was very difficult for megl don't know why. Adjustment to school was another problem for me- especially to a small school. The first fear I had about coming to a small school was the number of speeches and different activities that I would have to participate in. This kind of scared me at first but after meeting some of the kids my fears were soon calmed down. Bethany has done so much for me. The size and the warmth of the school I think are responsible for this. The school that I attended in Jamaica was so much larger and it was diffi- cult to talk with other girls about any problems with ease. This I have found among the girls here at Bethany. They can discuss anything that bothers them with their fellow students and thisl think is very good. The teachers I think play a major part in this respect. They arejust wonderful and there isnit one teacher whom I can say hasn't got an interest in his students. I am enjoying my year here in Indiana and at Bethany. My coming here was one of the best things that has ever happened to me. I know I shall find it very difficult to leave, but I hope to be back some day. May God bless you all. Chorus members were kept busy wrapping up last minute Christmas program plans. Mumbled German and Spanish carols found their way to several lucky CD Goshen homes. Students relaxed in the exotic Jamaican atmospher sphere of the annual Christmas banquet, enjoying it in spite of the fact that most thoughts were centered on the long awaited two weeks of freedom. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the starsg you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace with your soul. Unity doesn't just happen among 957 students and 109 faculty from dozens of states and countries. Unity is a new library, intercultural seminars lin lVlexico or New York City, for examplel, a prayer cell. EMC students search for truth in the realms of mind and spirit. Each thinks differently, but all experience a bond of spirit. That's unity worth exploring. Director of Admissions Eastern Nlennonite College Harrisonburg, Virginia 22801 Something is wrong with the church and the world. People have been saying that since the Reformation. And we still are. That's part of what the Goshen Plan is all about. Not just the bad things. But what a young person needs to know to serve God and fellow man. Effectively. To make his life and service worthwhile. A lot of people don't really understand what it means to be seriously dedicated to Christ and to all that He means in the 20th century. We put together literature, fine arts, history, science, sociology, Bi- ble, and philosophy plus a unique Study- Service Trimester abroad in an exciting and revealing course of studies. Last year 1,168 full-time students spent almost one and one-half million hours learning about their heritage and how to improve on it.
