Junior English students ponder over themes and THE SCARLET LETTER, ENGLISH DEPARTMENT The importance of learning to communicate fluently and effectively and of becoming acquainted with the many types of literature, makes English a basic required course for three years. A fourth year in the study of English is encouraged for all college-bound seniors. Basic grammar, spelling, formal writing, and the study of literature are em- phasized in the freshman course. Sophomores plod through mythology, formal gram- mar, and composition. In literature, juniors become acquainted with the works of great American authors and poets, and once again they delve into the depths of English grammar. In addition to studying English literature and creating writings of all types, this year's senior English class studied Charlton Laird's book THE MIRACLE OF LANGUAGE in which they learned the history and structure of the language, and discovered that no set rules of grammar may term usage as right or wrong but whether it communicates and is accepted determines its correctness . Speech, a one-semester elective course, is also included in the English department. This is the class in which students attain stage-confidence as they deliver various types of speeches. The techniques of public speaking are learned, and put into practice.
