A fourth year in the study of English is encouraged for all college-bound seniors. Basic grammar, spelling, formal writing, and the study of literature are em- phasized in the freshman course. Sophomores plod through mythology, formal gram- mar, and composition. In literature, juniors become acquainted with the works of great American authors and poets, and once again they delve into the depths of English grammar. In addition to studying English literature and creating writings of all types, this year's senior English class studied Charlton Laird's book THE MIRACLE OF LANGUAGE in which they learned the history and structure of the language, and discovered that no set rules of grammar may term usage as right or wrong but whether it communicates and is accepted determines its correctness . Speech, a one-semester elective course, is also included in the English department. This is the class in which students attain stage-confidence as they deliver various types of speeches. The techniques of public speaking are learned, and put into practice. World history is an elective, but U. S. history, government, and sociology are requirements for gradua- tion. In world history, usually taken during the sophomore year, past civilizations are studied to gain a clearer understanding of the problems in today's world. The juniors learn about the historical foundations of our country in U. S. history. Throughout the year, they fol- low the development and growth of the nation. Government and sociology are combined into one senior course. ln government the students study our nation's political organization and try to decide what their personal responsibility to the country and the world should be. Sociology motivates the students to do clear thinking and systematic problem-solving. SCIENCE The science department of Bethany is designed to give every student a basic knowledge of the sciences and to relate this to the world around him. Biology, a basic course, tells of all living things and how the process of life goes on. This course is a required course and is usually taken in the freshman year. Chemistry is a course that tells of the make-up of all living things, and describes the chemical pro- cesses of life. The laws of nature are explained in physics and are related to our modern everyday life. Physics ex- plains how we do what, and why it is possible for us to do it. Physical science is a basic science course and touches lightly on all three courses. As one of the first projects, Ms. Bauer asked the class to paint sunflowers from real Sunflowers, using tempra. Other projects during the first semester included personal monograms, outdoor pencil sketching, water colors, and ink drawings. The seed mosaics, after providing a Thanksgiving feast for the mice, had to be re-done. By means of block printing the class also made Christmas cards. During the second semester, Mrs. Bauer acquainted the class with the history of architecture and painting. Having studied this, each student first tried his hand at pastels and then at oil painting. Additional time was taken for working with ceramics. The 95-minute class periods were especially appreciated by the art class. Because the classes were longer, the students had time not only to plan a project, but also to begin working. When at last the art class could claim a room for its own, a much larger space was available for storage of supplies and displays of art work. MATH In addition to plaguing students, Bethany's math depart- ment serves a quite practical purpose. Designed to pro- vide a working knowledge of the tools of science, it aids students in developing the processes of logical thinking. The first-year course in algebra attempts to teach the fundamentals in dealing with equations and numbers, while Algebra II explores even further in similar areas. The relationships between geometric figures as well as a more advanced usage of logic in problem -solving serves as the basis of study for geometry students. Senior math, the final challenge for Bethany's math students, includes three rather involved areas of math- ematics: trigonometry, solid geometry, and coordinate geometry. Each has its separate goal and yet all are intended to relate the preceding courses to each other and then to render a math student prepared for even further study. This years' German classes were both twice as large as last year. The German I students struggled through an extensive grammar and vocabulary section, and came out feeling as though they were true Germans. These courses aim to help the students to under- stand their Bible better, to challenge them in their Christian life and to prepare them for witnessing to others. In the freshman year a study of the New Testament, Christ and his teachings, and the letters written to churches by Paul and other men of God, are studied. In the sophomore year a study of the Old Testament acquaints the students with the activities of God's people and helps them learn more of God and His law. One of the special activities of this course is a time- line, covering the period studied. In the junior year the students take a course in Chris- tian Education which is designed to help them build up their Christian life, to challenge them in Christian service, and acquaint them with Christian teaching methods, goals, and ideas. A special study on missions is also included. The class studies the history of missions andbecomes acquainted with today's missions. Senior students study church history which is broken down into two sections: The h.istory of the Christian Church, and the history of the Mennonite Church. Mr. Steiner shows the class the growth and development which took place in the church and how the church of today came into being. The second section pertains to the origin of the Mennonite church and what the Mennonite faith really is. All of these courses lead eventually to a deeper appreciation and understanding of the church. They place a challenge before each student, and instill a deeper respect for the church as a whole. 1 .f 'x Freshmen listen attentively as Mrs. Schrag lectures. TRACK Last year, the annual all-school track meet was held on the college sports field. Class spirit was high, and competition stiff. In the usual tradition, the seniors won the boys division. The sophomores won in the girls' division. To add to the excitement, several records were broken. Merlin Hartman set a new record in the 100 yard dash, and tied the standing record in the 220. The junior boys' relay team, Tom Gardner, Carl Weaver, Rick Chupp, and Carl Stauffer broke the record for the 880 yard relay. In the girls' division, four new records were made. Rosemary Stoltzfus set a new record in the high jump. In the softball throw, Phyllis Yoder tossed the ball for a new record. Sue Gardner and Mary Ann Krabill came to a stumbling finish in the three-legged race, to find they had set a new record. The sophomore girls' relay team, Gloria Miller, Jeanne Schrock, Rosemary Stoltzfus, and Ruth Yoder, broke the old 4-40 yard relay record. l-IOCHSTETLER TIN SHOP Spouting, Repair Work, l-lomelite Chain Saws Wheel Horse Tractor - Kohler Briggs 84 Stratton and Lawson 85 Clinton RHS, Nappanee, Ind. INTRAMURAL SOFTBALL Intramural softball, the highlight of October, resulted in several very exciting games this year. To get in practice for the tourney the teams played several exhibition games. Starting out the double elimination tourney, it was juniors versus seniors, with the game ending in favor of the seniors. The second game was freshmen challenging sophomores. In this game, the sophomores over-whelmed the freshmen. Ina truly sensational game, the juniors shut out the freshmen in a no-hitter pitched by Ken Thomas. In the equal- ly exciting senior versus sophomore game the sophomores were ahead 1-10 at the end of the sixth inning, but the seniors squeeked by in the last inning to win, 12-10. In the final game, the seniors capital- ized on junior errors to win the game and the tourney with ease. BURGER- DAIRY STORES 4 1 This year the Bethany soccer team competed in five games. Although the record doesn't indicate it all of the games were hard fought. Several times the boys were defeated in score, but never were they defeated in spirit. The two games with Central proved to be the best offensive and defensive games and as the record indicates were the most successful. LEAP YEAR PARTY The evening of February 14, 1964 brought many Bethanyites and their guests to the old chapel for the YPCA Leap Year Valentine Party. As they arrived, kids assembled in small groups, laughing and talk- ing until the first game started. The games in- cluded the reassembling of a heart puzzle by opposing teams, a honeymoon race, and a balloon burst. The guests then spread blankets on the floor and settled back to enjoy the evening entertainment. Several love ballads were sung to the accompaniment of a guitar, and romantic poems were read. The highlight of the evening was The Trysting Place, a farce presented by the sophomore class. ALL-SCHOOL SOCIAL One evening, late last spring, the halls of Bethany were filled with strange sounds. Muffled bumps and thuds, and sudden outbursts of cheering and clapping issued from the Chapel. On opening the door and peeking inside, we were abruptly confronted with a brightly-lit stage, and a profusion of en- rapt high schoolers. It was the night of the All-School Social. Craig Yoder, playing a harassed father, paced the floor in front of his seven shrieking children. After 15 minutes of action packed drama, father and mother, looking pale and haggard, limped off stage, while their brood fell into in- nocent sleep. Next, sophomores took over. Doing a take- off on the T.V. show, BEVERLY HILLBILLIES, they pre- sented a hillbilly wettin', complete with flower girl. Juniors followed, with a skit called Poky Hauntus. In this, juniors acted as certain inanimate objects, often complete with sound effects! The seniors put the whole room in an uproar with their style show, complete with male models! After elaborate fanfare, by Mr. Friesen and Mr. Gross, Maestro Miller led the faculty in a startling rendition of Bethany, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah! i Bethany, yeah, yeah, yeah! Phweet! BANQUET That memorable floating night in May was proclaimed by the soft whispering of airy dresses and the quiet fra- grance of slightly crooked corsages. The couples strolled leisurely down a shady garden path of the Southern Plantation and were greeted by the mistress of the mansion. They passed by great white pillars and through heavy wooden doors into the lavish candle- lit dining room. Strauss waltzes set the tranquil romantic mood of southern hospitality and costumed waiters and waitresses further introduced the mood with steaming platters of food. And so, the Junior-Senior Banquet took its place among the pictures hanging in the halls of memory. HARTER AUTO SUPPLY Auto Parts and Accessories Electric Tool 86 Motor Service 919 E. The ones who were it in the game of Swat put all they had into swatting the sorry victims. After several other games, the groups all joined together to play Tunnel. This game resulted in many pi1e-ups and everyonehad a rollicking good time. The students then assembled south of the ball diamond under the shade trees and joined in the singing of many rounds and camp songs led by Mr. Lehman. In an impromptu pro- gram, several students told why they liked Bethany. The afternoon was topped off with refreshments, and everyone went home knowing more people than when he had come. The bright smiles of the servers faded and we heard about tired feet and how soon can we leave? Then it was all over. The last people were served, the last pie sold, chairs and tables were quickly taken down, and tickets and money were counted and recounted. SENIOR TRIP For 97 112 hours the senior class trip thoroughly mixed eight seniors and seven chaperones on the two buses, in New York City, and at the Wor1d's Fair. This particular recipe resulted in one very large batch of assorted memories. The names of Rockefeller Center, the United Nations, Wall Street, Fifth Avenue, the Bowery, and Manhattan now mean something specific to each member of the class of '65. New York City is remembered as a city of innumerable neon signs, towering skyscrapers, hurrying masses of human- ity, jolting subway rides, and careening buses filled beyond capacity. Among the memories of the Wor1d's Fair are those of the Unisphere, the General Electric, the Spain, the Ford, pavilions, long feathered hats, and colorful leis. From late night's T.V. and early morning's jangling tele- phone, to aching feet and tired bones, to pillow fights and playing Rook, mention of the trip calls up memories, de- lightful and appalling. Perhaps one of the best is arriving home after such a wonderful experience. rgflisr' - 1. .A . W- .A E . . if Y, . azz ' Se '5' m 961 MJ xr! Eg, KX.. - 4 iii 35 i wait agp Yf nf. The Student Body Association president, the four class vice-presidents, the president of the Y.P,C. A. , a boy and a girl representative from each class, and an advisor from the faculty, make up the members of the Student Council. Although it is still a very young organization, the Student Council is involved in many school projects. The All-School Party, the Get-Acquainted Social, and the Christmas Banquet are several of the larger projects in which the Student Council is involved. The purpose of the Student Council is to promote good student relationships, school spirit, and a good student-faculty relationship. In order to carry out the purpose of the Student Council, each representative is to bring before the Student Council the suggestions and opinions of his class and each representative is responsible to report back to his class the decisions of the Student Council. It took a little while to find out what the kids in our class were really like and to find the type of kids with whom we like to chum, but now we're pretty well set- tled. We must really have a great class, because everyone is always watching us. It wouldn't be because the girls giggle continuously and the boys slug each other around, would it? We rather enjoy upperclassmen, going to ballgames and yell- ing our hearts out, friendly seniors, and those few teachers who really want to believe we're thinking sometimes. Things very hard to take are sophomores, demerits, sitting in the front section of the chapel, people who underestimate us, and responsibility. We do have one problem. Their dignified behavior, mature attitudes, and soaring ambitions are a constant surprise to the entire school. They are intellectual, serious-minded, and studious-- before tests. A mere test, however, never daunts their joyful spirits for long. Soon afterward they are again spreading cheer and good humor to all their worthy friends and honorable teachers. Making important decisions and planning for the future also find a place in the seniors' busy schedule. Through great efforts on their behalf, when May arrives, they are minor church historians and budding governmental experts. Despite their excited anticipation for graduation night, they will cherish long the memories of the fish fry, the class trip, the Jr. -Sr. banquet and numerous other high school experiences.
