The American Flag LYNNE GROSSMAN I stood there looking at the American flag. I was alone in the classroom, everyone else had gone. Moved by the flag Waving above me, I thought of the meaning of this symbol of freedom. I wondered, Why do so many people take the gift of freedom for granted? At this moment, I thought of what freedom means to me . To me, freedom means many things . It means being able to practice the tenets of my religion Without the fear of persecution. It means being able to go to a newsstand to choose from a variety of publications all expressing different viewpoints. It means being able to speak out Without fear of arrest. In this country, as a citizen. I have the right to vote for the candidate of my choice. If I find an official in office unworthy and unconcerned with the Welfare of the people, I have the opportunity of electing a more capable individual when his term expires. Iglanced once more at the flag, paused a moment, and quietly left the room proud that I was an American.
