DTH I8 Dear Graduates: ln selecting motion as your theme, you define it as constant movement. You show its application to life, the Jew, the study of Torah, etc. There is yet another area involving motion, encompassing, perhaps, all those you mention. That area is your education. Education may be defined as the sum of one's experiences in life. It does not be- gin in the first grade nor does it end at graduation. It precedes school and goes beyond all phases of formal schooling. The host of school experiences, however, may strengthen some early childhood conceptions and may negate other ideas as infantile and unrealistic. School experiences are constantly broadening and reshap- ing one's outlook on life. Although formal schooling is but a small phase of one's overall education, it is, nevertheless, an important phase. The wise student, understanding the value of schooling, utilizes his time intelligently. He draws from the endless well of his teachers' teachings, knowing that each experience contains knowledge more price- less than gems. No moment passes by without gain and achievement. The fool, on the other hand, whiles away his time accomplishing nothing. I sincerely wish each of you the wisdom to make each moment count. May your life be one of constant forward motion in the path of our jewish heritage and tradi- tion . I write and write and re- write and yet it doesn't seem well written. I rip it up and start all over again. Will something of mine be accepted for the yearbook? Are other girls more gifted than I? Why do I find writing so difficult? I recall looking through all the topics given to us by our teacher. Finally, I found one that I thought would be of interest. After spending an entire night on The Value of an Education , I realized that the topic deserved better treatment. Undaunted, I tried again. However, try as I might, I found no success. Then it occured to me. Why not write about the difficulty of writing a composition? Perhaps the difficulty is due to a lack of writing skills . Perhaps the writer has insuf- ficient knowledge of his subject matter. It is impossible to convince others of that which you yourself are uncertain. These are two of the basic problems I find that I encounter in writing compositions I Wonder how many of my classmates have similar problems in writing their composi tions. The Future CYNTHIA GO LDBE RG Why does the future play the part of the mute, While the past and the present have so much to say? Why does nature bring us one and all To think of tomorrow, today? The weatherman predicts that the sun will shine A But in its place comes the rainy 6, Many a time he guesses correctly Y When he's wrong, can anyone complain? There are many who just as the weatherman The future try to foretellg Don't make the mistake of being like them The future is enclosed in a shell For the future we must wait and see No one knows what tomorrow will bring Only the past and the present do talk, I f . 4 Nobody knows what the future will be . 40 The American Flag LYNNE GROSSMAN I stood there looking at the American flag. I was alone in the classroom, everyone else had gone. Moved by the flag Waving above me, I thought of the meaning of this symbol of freedom. I wondered, Why do so many people take the gift of freedom for granted? At this moment, I thought of what freedom means to me . To me, freedom means many things . It means being able to practice the tenets of my religion Without the fear of persecution. It means being able to go to a newsstand to choose from a variety of publications all expressing different viewpoints. It means being able to speak out Without fear of arrest. In this country, as a citizen. I have the right to vote for the candidate of my choice. If I find an official in office unworthy and unconcerned with the Welfare of the people, I have the opportunity of electing a more capable individual when his term expires. Iglanced once more at the flag, paused a moment, and quietly left the room proud that I was an American.
