Graduation from elementary school is almost like the first step taken by a baby. Before the baby learns to walk, he crawls. Later he stands by supporting himself upon some object. Then he begins to walk. Our education follows a similar pattern. We first learn the alphabet. Then, we master the fundamentals of reading, writing, grammar, and sentence structure. When we conclude the elementary course of study we graduate. Both baby and graduate have taken their first big step. Graduation is also a time for farewells to teachers and friends. We are left with a host of fond memories. This parting is difficult to bear. It means an end to a security we have always known. We must now become, almost overnight, responsible and mature individuals. After graduation, we change schools and must form new friend ships. We are a bit afraid of the future. However, we are confi- dent that, in time, we will make the proper adjustment to our new environment. We really do not have to give up our old friendships. lf we truly desire, we can keep in touch with each other no matter which high school we attend. I hope sincerely that graduation will not cause us to drift too far apart from each other. We should plan to get together to remember the common experiences we enjoyed in our elementary school years. This will help us to re- main close friends throughout our lives. SHE LLEY BROWN 36
