The stage is set, the lights shine brightly, the music begins playing, and you, the stars of tonight's show, are waiting to march down the aisle, dressed in white, with your heads erect and your faces beaming. All eyes are focused upon you. You are fidgety, nervous, excited, concerned with your appearance, happy to see the proud glances of your parents and relatives. This is your moment of glory. You deserve this glory for you have successfully completed eight long years of study and have arrived at your destina- tion, your graduation. However, your journey is far from over. You pause here, temporarily only to change trains and to chart your course for the future. What lies in store for you in high school and beyond only time will tell. You are anxious to get started on the next lap of your journey. You face the future without trepidation for you know that the foundation laid for you in our school, both in Torah and secular knowledge, is strong and solid. May the SHALHEVET, the flame of Torah, like the pillar of fire of old, illuminate your path and guide you successfully over life's difficult roads. Alee V'hatzlichi -- Go forth and succeed. Sees he not their tear-stained faces Pleading for deliverance from this inferno Which they did not make, but in which they will burn? Ohll But, did they not make it along with us all, Watching, silently, the World in its fall, Saying not a word, making not a move, Trying not the villain'sWrong-doing to prove? If all men are to blame, why now do they cry? They have made this World, and in it must die. SUZANNA FOGE L MY GRANDFATHER g Although my grandfather I have never seen, - I would like to describe him as he had been, His height was five foot and inches eight, Need one be tall to be noble and great? His shoulders were broad, his head held high, With a friendly smile for all who passed byg His heart was so big, made of pure gold, I His friends were so many, so I am told. C 1 I x fl Il He knew not selfishness nor hatred nor greed, Love thy neighbor was his only creed, Perhaps one would label him color blind Since in color of skin no difference did he find. X He hated violence-, killing, and war, Peace and tranquility were what he longed for' A life under G-d, with the Torah as a guide, To act as a jew was his greatest pride. l My grandfather is no longer here, But his memory will live on for many a year In the hearts of his family and in my mind, Another like him I'll never find. SANDRA STERN i I The world was stunned beyond belief On that bright November day, When a mad assassin's bullet Took a gallant heart away. A man so young and happy Who at his own expense would jest, In our hearts he'll live forever For his kind was of the best. That all men are created equal Was the cause for which he did try, It was a sad and dreadful day The day that he did die. MENT IT WAS NO MORE At first, the world thought him too young But he soon dispelled all fears, He proved himself extremely wise, Wise beyond his years. His widow and his children Watched as there he layg Little john saluted, As the casket moved away. And so the whole world mourned A man who did his best, A man who had a heart of gold, In peace may his soul rest. CAROL GOLDBERG with heads troubled twenty-second, a sad day indeed, death of a great man in lead' low in sorrow of tomo should be -- in our An end to all strife for eternityg Of war and hatred there should be no trace, Then our world will be a much happier place. It started early in the morning when my oldest sister, Marin, took me to school. Being below school age I was going to attend kinder- garten. I had formed a picture in my young mind of how nice school would be. However, when one is brought face to face with reality it usually seems different from what one imagined it to be. So it was with me. The moment I saw the school building Iwas shocked beyond move- ment or speech. Marin grabbed my hand and deposited me at my line in the school playground, where everyone was to meet on the first day. I did not know that students had to stay with their classmates. I de- cided to look for my sister. Suddenly, the school bell rang. The classes went upstairs. I was ushered into the nearest room by one of the older girls, Itook a seat, not realizing that this was the first grade and not the kindergarten room. Who would believe that my ignorance would be of help to me? Well, it was. When the mistake was discovered, weeks later, it was too late. Iwas already settled there and there I remained. Were it not for my innocent goof, I would not be graduating this year. I would have had to go through another year of school. In view of this fact, do you think that it was such an INNOCENT mistake? Sl-IAINA WEISBORD 28 THE ERROR THAT PAID OFF SHOPPING FOR A DRESS W 1 -llll 1 l lg? g g p 4. ' fl l , L illlllllli, I Wanting to take advantage of the special occasion coming up, I decided to go out and buy a new dress for myself. My mother, after a hard day, argued with me for half an hour protesting that she was too tired to go. After convincing her that she would be just as tired the next night, we were off on our shopping spree to Alexander's de- partment store. Having reached our destination, my mother decided that she would like to look through the bargains in the basement before we go to the second floor in search for the impossibleg namely, a nice dress, which we both would like, with a three quarter sleeve, and a price tag that we could look at without suffering heart failure. By the time we were finished rummaging through the basement it was 9:15 P.M., just fifteen minutes before closing time. My mother instructed me to stand in line and pay for the card of bobby pins she bought, while she looks in the dress department. On her way up she met a friend and stopped for a brief chit-chat. By this time it was 9:25 P.M., just five minutes left. We quickly looked through the dresses and found something suitable at 9:29 P.M. I tried on the dress in the fitting room and ran quickly to pay for it. In my excitement I left the dress in the fitting room. I rushed back but it was too late. The fitting room was closed. 0h well . . . we tried. Disappointed and disillusioned I returned home. I resolved then, that next time, we would shop for a dress first, and then look for bargains. The following day Iwent into a little shop in my neighbor- hood and found, to my surprise, the identical dress, for two dollars less than Alexander's bargain price. When he is perhaps a year older he seeks to venture further. He begins crawling through the house groping for objects. Curiosity has led him to progress from observation to motion. When he reaches the precious age of six, he is introduced to school, a new environment. Here he is compelled to abandon his mother's apron strings and to mingle with other children. Although at first he is a bit reluctant, he finally accepts the idea. Soon he makes friends and his social life begins. The years pass. He now feels much older and Wiser. He begins to use his faculties for reasoning and thinking. He starts to realize that school is definitely a valuable asset to his life. With time he matures mentally and physically. He develops a greater capacity for understanding and he craves to comprehend the world in which he lives. Before he has had a chance to acclimate himself to his environment the eighth year has crept up upon him. His eyes have now opened wide. Over the years his outlook in life has changed considerably. He looks back at his eight years of educa- tion and realizes how important they Were. Now he has the opportunity to climb higher on the educational ladder since a strong foundation has been laid for him. He is thankful to his parents for all that they have done for him. He hopes, in the future, to prove worthy of their many sacrifices on his behalf. SANDRA STE RN 32 GXX rw vga X? 'H 7 I ' N I A ' K lt is obvious that in this era of technical progress it is quite difficult for an uneducated individual to succeed in life. Life, today, is much too complex and the need for a well rounded education is a primary concern to all. A good education, like an enormous structure, must be built gradually. lt must have a strong foundation as its base. The founda- tion stones are laid in the earliest years of a person's life. However, at this time he has not as yet developed his faculties for understand- ing. He does not comprehend the true value of education and the joy it may bring. As he makes his way through elementary and junior high school, the sparks of realization hit him quite suddenly. He looks back upon his elementary years and is amazed at the tremendous progress he has made. He feels sorry for the many opportunities for advance- ment he let slip by due to his immaturity. He continues on this path through high school and beyond. Now he has reached his goal. He has secured the education for which he has so painstakingly labored. He is now prepared to make use of the knowledge he has acquired and really enjoy the fruits of his years of labor.
