Good Citizen Award LINDA MARSH Girls ' State Representative DICKIE LATTA Boys ' State Representative DAVID BUCHANAN Boys ' State Representative 18 Class History In 1950, our class of ' 62 began a trail of twelve years of memories we shall never forget. The first year in school was one of amazement and confused excitement, and it was also the first time we had eaten away from home. Every day we got in a straight line and marched into the cafeteria. Just think—the same good food for the next twelve years! This was the year we lost most of our selfishness and started sharing with others. Of course, Jan Shoaf, who was very- selfish, now has the biggest marble collection in the Senior class. Speaking of Jan, will you ever forget the time he and Lee Jones were tied up and locked in the closet for playing Cowboys and Indians during reading class? The next few years we sailed on without much change or difficulty. The sixth grade was perhaps the turning point in our lives. During that year the boys realized that there were girls in the world and vice-versa. Richard Murrell was the Romeo of our class. Listed among his admirers were Linda Heffner and Mary Lynn Bunting. The eighth grade was the beginning of our preparation for high school. That year we took a trip to Raleigh to see the museum, State Capitol, and the Governor ' s Mansion. We lunched on the picnic grounds at Pullen Park. It was then that we realized our trips were more for educational purposes than mere pleasure. Finally the day came—we were members of the high school. We arrived that day realizing we had the privilege of selecting our own subjects. These were known as our salad days -young, green, and all mixed up! We were the only unwanted group in high school. Our Sophomore year was one of hard work. It ranged from slaving in Mrs. King ' s mathematics class to cutting up frogs in Mr. Foster ' s biology class. It seemed as though we had more friends, perhaps because we had joined various clubs and had engaged in sports activities. Our Junioryear was the most exciting year. For days after receiving our class rings, we went around proudly displaying them, making the underclassmen envious of us. Plans for the Junior-Senior Banquetwere begun, and the theme Southern Cotillion was selected.. It was held at the Starmount Forest Country Club on Friday, April 28. We planned an entertaining program. Ten members of the Junior Class danced the beautiful Minuet, and the Junior girls sang Tenderly. Mary Lynn Bunting sang Younger than Springtime accompanied by Linda Marsh at the piano. Now we have reached our final year of high school. It is nice to think about our title as Senior, but most of us are thinking about our trip to Washington and New York which we plan to take on April 7. As we receive our high school diploma, another door will open for us. New decisions will have to be made, but we shall still be Grasping for an Ever-Soaring Goal. VICKIE MARTIN KENNETH MARTIN Historians 19 Last Will and Testament BESSEMER HIGH SCHOOL City of Greensboro County of Guilford We, the Senior Class of 1962, being of sound mind, do hereby declare this to be our Last Will and Testament, hereby rendering null and void any will and bequest which may have been previously made. ITEM I To the family of our esteemed principal, the late Wendell H. Cude, we leave our deepest gratitude for his abiding influence, not only to us, but to many graduates. ITEM II To the faculty, the mere fact that we are leaving should be enough. Also, to you goes our appreciation for the patience and interest you have shown to us during the past twelve years. We should like to say a very heartfelt, Thank You. ITEM III To the Juniors, we leave the noble title of Senior. With the title of Senior, goes the responsibilities of setting proper examples of behavior and being the best possible leaders. Take care of old B.H. S. for us. ITEM IV To the Sophomores goes the title of Junior. This year you will become a member of that elite society known as upper classmen. This is your year of fun and excitement; enjoy it! ITEM V To the Freshmen, we leave the advice to rest at every opportunity because you are certainly going to work as Sophomores. ITEM VI To the Freshmen-to-be, we leave the title Green Freshmen and our best wishes. You ' ll need them. ITEM VII Individual bequests and bequeaths: VERNON ALLEN leaves his hot, fifty Ford to anybody who can keep it on the road. VICKEY APPLE leaves her height to Bobbie CaHill. GWYN ADKINS leaves her place beside Gloria Kulick to Clifford Birchett. BUDDY BALL leaves his affection for science courses (chemistry and physics) to Gale Pardue. ROY BALDWIN leaves his title pass-and-run threat to Gwyn Brooks. ANN BAYNES leaves her sister, Barbara, behind to carry on the reputation of the beautiful Baynes ' girls. BUTCH BAYNES leaves his Elvis Presley haircut to Billy Martin. GORDON BERRIER leaves the joy of finally getting out of school, with the hope that he may some day know the same joy, to Billy Treadway. JOYCE SMITH BRELAND leaves to live happily ever after with Buddy. DAVID SCROOGE BUCHANAN would leave his nickname Buck to someone, but it has such a close relationship to money that he can ' t bear to part with it. MARY LYNN BUNTING leaves her radiant personality and warm smile to George King. BUTCH BUNTON leaves without Ellen. Junior boys, watch out! CHARLINE CALAPLAN leaves her cousin, Toby Straughn, behind to continue running the Athletic Department. Many pleasant rainy day and evening hours were spent playing the game and many the laugh at the expense of luckless ones who were never able to guess right even when prompted repeatedly. Today every person owning or operating an automobile is consciously or unconsciously playing the old game, “Heavy, Heavy hangs over your head.” The object this time is easy to guess—it’s the automobile. Just how we operate the vehicle determines how really heavy the object is. “How Heavy is Heavy” is determined by your accidents or law viola¬ tions. Chargeable accidents and convictions of motor vehicle law viola¬ tions cause points to be charged against your record and these points are accumulated for three years. As an illustration pre-arranged racing costs eight points as does also driving-trader the influence combined with an accident. If you are under age 25 and ingle and convicted of these offenses your insurance premi¬ um for thra years will be $350.00 per year at present rates. Other charges arain proportion. Governor Sanford has instructed the highway patrol to tighten up on speeders ants other highway law violators. The odds are against you if you take affiance. The penalty is not only the court fine and cost but also irbaviwMncreased insurance premiums. Don ' t taRtssSie chance! It isn’t worth it.
