We entered the first grade with eager thoughts of school. After the first grade, some of the luster had worn thin. This was the grade when we knew all the questions; in the fourth grade, we thought we knew all the answers. The next years were filled with fun in form of parties, trips, and adventures new to us. In the fifth grade we visited Guilford Dairy, Coca-Cola Bottling Company and the Fire Station. Our eighth grade was a year of excitement for all of us. We made great plans for our trip to Durham and Raleigh. We visited the Chesterfield tobacco plant,Duke Chapel and Duke Gardens in Durham . In Raleigh we toured the capital, museum, gas chamber at the State Prison, and the State Legislature in action. The latter part of the year was highlighted by our preparation for high school. Mrs. Cane, Mrs. Beach, and Mrs. Snipes advised us what subjects to take our Freshman year. Finally the big day arrived! We were what upper¬ classmen considered Green Freshmen, but we thought that we knew how to get along, we really thought we were hot-stuff, but Coach Harry cooled us off. Our Freshmen boys enjoyed beating Mr. Hunter ' s Globe - trotters in the grade tournaments. As time passed, it didn ' t seem possible that we had already outgrown out name of green freshmen. Now we were sophomores and had the privilege of passing our name down to the up-coming eighth-graders. This was the year that our class re ally became acquainted with high school ways, we handed down our immature ways to the up-coming Freshmen. We had Mr. Burnette—our all-time favorite—as one of our leaders. When we entered our Junior year, we eagerly awaited the arrival of our class rings. Under the leadership of Mrs. Steele, Miss Hemphill, and Mrs. Arvin, we began to plan for the traditional Junior-Senior banquet. We selected the theme of Dancing in the Dark and deco¬ rated the ballroom of the Starmount Forest Country Club. The banquet was a big success. The big day, August 29, 1960, had finally come. We were now Seniors. This was the year that we had awaited for eleven years. We are eagerly anticipating our trip to Washington, D.C., and New York City. We are also looking forward to the Junior-Senior banquet which will be out last. We know that we shall never forget Bessemer and the many memories it will always have for us. We know that there will always be a place in our hearts for all the teachers who have helped make us what we are today. Class Poem Twelve years ago, we happily enrolled, With finishing school as our highest goal. Fate has been kind to us, we know. She ' s helped to prepare us to meet each blow. We ' ve all had problems, some large and some small. We ' ve learned to face them, one and all. We ' ve worked,we ' ve played,we ' ve laughed,we ' ve cried. We ' ve fought for the right—or at least we ' ve tried. Our high school years have flown so fast, That we almost wish for days gone past. God, our burdens has helped us bear. He ' s taught us how rich the friendships we share. We ' ve learned great wisdom, courage, and right, Designed to make our future lives bright. ' Tis graduation night—we now say good-bye. We ' ve enjoyed all our years at old Bessemer High By Juanita Kaye Meetze Class Prayer Our most kind and gracious Heavenly Father, we bow before Thee in humble admiration, giving thanks always for the many blessings that Thou hast so freely bestowed upon us these years of our school life. Now as we reach the cross-roads of life, grant to us Thy wisdom, Thy great kindness, and Thy understanding to meet the problems that will befall us. May we always honor Thee in every word and deed. Trying to remember how we were then at Bessemer during the period 44 to 51 years ago is tricky at the best but among those memories is a first experience in football when I made a flying tackle and caught Ed Holt around the ankles and he fell about seven feet forward and promptly got up and picked all 87 pounds of me up by the heels and butted my head into the not too soft ground. The school abstained from football after that occurrence. But we were proud of our school, both proud and jealous of our baseball repu¬ tation, proud of our girls, proud of what other schools referred to as being good sports man ship, proud of our teachers and Professor Younts and just naturally proud to be a part of Bessemer. It ' s a far cry from the woodshed age of 1909-16 when we kept the wood stoves burning to the present automatic and atomic age, but in spite of the progress in sciences and services we feel that the same basic qualities of honesty, decency and pardonable pride in the school and what it stands for prevail today as they did many years ago. We ' re still proud to feel that we are a part of Bessemer. WIMBISH INSURANCE AGENCY L • ‘ ' General Agents u ’ i.k. X_. J 78 juA £U cl wul. i u - ' . (i0UL ' L (LajJc 0 3 wcicVCW NA J .
