Class History By Valeria Morgan and Phillip Bunting Just about twelve years ago, our class of '57 began its long and eventful climb up the stairway of higher education by entering the first grade. That first year in school was one of utter amazement and organized confusion as we experienced our first feelings of being on our own.11 But as we advanced in school, we also began to think more seriously of the necessity of an education. During those youthful years, we studied such interesting and varied subjects as science, geography, and the ever- present English. In the sixth grade, we played in the basketball grade tournament for the first time. By this time most of the boy's thoughts were beginning to turn to, of all things, girls. And most of the girls, of course, returned the compliment (?). The eighth grade seemed to us to be of primary duty to prepare us for the years ahead in high school. While we also took a trip to Raleigh, that year we began to accept more responsibility. Our first day in high school was one we shall never forget. Although everyone seemed eager to help, we were still more or less nervous and scared. Still, the moment we stepped into the crowded hall, we felt grown up and important. The confusion and excitement of that particular day made it all the more wonderful. Since we were now in high school, we could look down upon the lower classmen from our rung on the ladder of learning. That was the year we though we knew everything and were dumb enough to believe it. By the time our sophomore year rolled around, the teachers and other students seemed friendlier and more helpful. Insteadof heeding the advice of teachers, most of us mistakenly seemed to think that high school was just a four year vacation. The following school year, our junior year, we started planning for the future. Because of this, we began to take a more active interest in school activities. Soon after receiving our class rings, we began to feel truly grown up and indis- pensible. After much hustle and bustle, the traditional Junior-Senior Banquet became a reality. The banquet, whose theme was Stardust, was held in the ball room of the O'Henry Hotel. By the end of the year, we had experienced the only true, indescrib- able feeling of comradeship and attachment one gains through constant association with other students. Now, as seniors, while looking forward to the day of graduation from this institute of higher learning, we also look back through the years with both regrets for what we didn't do and proudly for what we did. When we entered this class with high hopes and big ambitions, little did we realize how much responsibility would be placed on us. Now, that brings us up to the present. Although some time still remains before that final day when we receive our diplorrias, we will hold in our hearts forever the many happy memories of the wonderful times we have had here at Bessemer High School.
