1955 SPOTLIGHT BESSEMER SCHOOL GREENSBORO, NORTH CAROLINA Foreword As we prepared our 1955 Spotlight, we tried to include all the things which we shall always remember about our school—the days when we began our journey into the world of learning, the clubs to which we belonged, and the ath- letic events which were so outstanding. These things, plus the many friends we have made, make up our school activities. We wanted to capture these things in our annual in order that they can be cherished for years to come. 2 Dedication For her patience and understanding in guiding us through our high school years, for the services she has rendered, and for her co- operation in school activities, we, the Senior Class, take great pleasure in dedicating our 1955 Spotlight to—Mrs. Marietta S. Allen. In Honor Of We, the Senior Class of 1955, wish to express our appreciation to two men who we feel have contributed greatly to our high school days—Mr. Jesse O'Ferrell and Mr. Raymond O'Ferrell. Over a period of several years they have unselfishly given their time and effort to help in the up-building of the moral character of the boys and girls of Bessemer High School. Our humble thanks go to them for a job well done. 4 •’j. t v WMSm m iiffi m i 'I .Vn. :-' '; C -:• y; I .........................................................- W. H. Class Poem Annie J. Carroll It's nearing the close of another school year, And the memories that are now so dear Will always linger in our mind As we Voyage o'er the sea of time. Now that we're facing the life ahead, We hope that the path which we have tread Will lead others higher than we, Who true, honest and faithful will be. God has gone with us through this short year And He will always be just as near, Until we breathe our last sigh, And travel the road to the sky. 17 Senior Autographs 18 1 Senior Superlatives i i Ernestine Pruitt Most Likely to Succeed Gene Heath Richard O Neal Audrey O Ferrell Best All-Around i Laura Mills : Best Personality Bob Casey Bob Ingold Best Dressed Jean Lovings IK I 19 Senior Superlatives Gary Price Nancy Dixon Ray O'Ferrell Phoebe Brady Most Studious Most Dependable Jo Ann Smith Most Popular Larry Hatley Tommy Turner Carolyn Strickland Most Attractive 20 Senior Superlatives Frank Bailey Most Talented Nancy Allen Bobby Williams Most Original Joan Berckmar. By Jack Cagle As I start to put the finishing touches on the past of the Seniors of '55, I realize with no little concern that our days of trials, joys, and sorrows, are all but over. The many good times and pleasant experiences we have shared will soon be only treasured mem- ories. This brings to mind the famous old saying, All good things must come to an end. These have been a happy twelve years for those I of us who have attended dear old Bessemer High and for those who have joined us in the later years. It seems that it was only yesterday that the most ex- cited kids in school flocked to Miss Fryar's and Mrs. Wilcox's rooms to start the grandest adventures of their lives—school. After that first year some of the luster of school began to dull a bit. These next few years would give us the back-ground we would sorely need when we reached that coveted place—high school. The years went by, and we suddenly found we were in the fifth grade. We were really climbing the ladder! The highlight of that year was our trip to the state capitol, Raleigh. We visited all the museums, the Capitol building, the governor's mansion, and had a most enjoyable trip. The next two years also went by very quickly. We found ourselves in the doorway to high school, the eighth grade. This was really a year of good times! Numerous parties and get-togethers kept the year as gay as one would want it. One of the high- lights of the year was a trip to the Morehead Plane- tarium to see The Easter Story. This trip was enjoyed by one and all. This wasn't the only trip we took that year, as we again took a trip to the state capital. We received great cultural benefits this time as we went, not to have a good time, but to receive some educa- tional benefit. The following September it happened—we were in high school at last! We were walking on clouds for a few days, but the problem of fixing our schedules and meeting our many classes soon brought us down to earth. Many of the students, both boys and girls, went out for the various athletic teams as freshmen and made them. Bessemer's athletic teams looked forward to the future. The year passed quickly, and soon we were out of school on our summer vacation looking forward to the next year. Our Sophomore year came and went as smoothly as possible. Various parties and outings kept us eager and anxious for the work we had to do in school. Fi- nally, in the spring, we took a trip to the mountains. When we started, it was an ideal day, but as we went farther along, the weather, accompanied by snow and cold, became worse. Despite the unseasonable weath- er, everyone had a good time. Our Junior year we really began to feel impor- tant. Almost everyone in the class became a member of some club or organization. We were stepping up in this old world! After mid-term, 'palans were started for the Junior-Senior Banquet. The Banquet was held at the Mayfair Banquet Room, and everyone had a grand time. The settings and decorations were pat- terned after An Old Dutch Theme. The year wouldn't be complete without a trip, and this year everyone piled into the activity bus and took off for the beach. This was one of the most exciting and interesting trips we have ever taken as a class. A football game on the beach was made funny by the antics of Coach Joe Bryson and Bob Casey. They really carried on! At last it happened! We were Seniors! The year began with great enthusiasm shown by all. The stu- dents showed a zest and zeal that had seldom been seen before. Even Larry Silas Hatley was getting to school on time. During this exciting fall season, the class of '55 had its first important class meeting to elect the fol- lowing officers: Jack Cagel, President; Gene Heath, Vice-President; Billy Jo Wall, Secretary; and Gary Price, Treasurer. We, the senior class, are looking forward, with the help of our senior sponsors, Miss Guill and Mr. Belen, to making this a year to remember. Again we piled into the activity bus and, this time, started for the mountains. This time the weather was ideal and the mountain scenery was beautiful. At the end of the day no one had a complaint, and the trip was judged a huge success. About this time we realized that as students of Bessemer High our days were num- bered. Despite this, we are looking forward to the Florida Trip, the Junior-Senior Banquet, and finally, graduation. As we graduate this year, and each member goes out in search of a career, I am sure that each and everyone of us wiil remember our years at Bessemer High as truly the best years of our lives. 27 C tcte'ic£ 44 Pte t Junior Class Officers Seated: Sybil Crenshaw, President. CLEAN THINKING, with due recognition of the rights of oil people, is a long step toward citizenship. CHURCH AFFILIATION means much in the minds and hearts of young and old in promoting good citizenship. EDUCATIONAL ADVANTAGES can go far toward promoting good citizenship but are only a means to an end and do not stand alone as the answer. The world is full of educated derelicts. EVEN WHEN BLESSED with the three qualifications above, we can never qualify as a good citizen unless we play our part in the commu- nity, state, and nation by voting for the things and persons we believe in. To do more than merely vote is optional. To do less (not vote) we quote Phillips Brooks: He who fails to vote is a bad citizen whatever other virtues he may possess.
