They have their exits and their entrances. And one man in his time plays many parts. High school days are like a drama, presented in four acts. We, the students, play many parts in this drama. As fresh- men, we make our entrances; as seniors, our exits. Some of us take leading parts; others of us play minor roles. In this 1953 edition of the SPOTLIGHT, the play's the thing. We dedicate our 1953 Spotlight to Mrs. Lillian S. Steele with love and appreciation to one that has helped us in all that we attempted in our high school life. 111 I,.': UNDER THE DIRECTION OF WENDELL H. CUDE, PRINCIPAL A. B. Guilford College M. By Harvey Shelley Dear God: We thank Thee for the gift of Thy Son, Jesus, who died that we might live. We thank Thee for the many blessings and opportunities that have been ours. As we step out into a new and different life, we ask Thee to strengthen us, not only physically but also spiritually. We pray that our lives will be lived according to Thy will, and that they will be pleasing to Thee. As we near the end of the road, we pray that our lives will have accomplished much for Thee. Keep us forever near Thee. Amen. CLASS HISTORY By Dot Elliott It was a warm morning in September when the class of '53 entered the doors of Bessemer School for the first time. We were frightened at first, but under the guidance of Mrs. Wilcox and Miss Fryar we soon overcame our shyness. We enjoyed learning the alphabet, reading, and playing in the toy band. During the next few years in the primary grades, we flourished as masters of readin', writin', and Tithmetic. We showed great acting ability in these first years by giving such plays as ’’The Three Bears ’ and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs . We also enjoyed such games as hopscotch, jump rope, marbles, cowboys, and dodge ball. In the 5th and 6th grades, we really did study some interesting and adventurous subjects. Since we were such privileged characters we got to go to Raleigh in the fifth grade and the eighth grade. As seventh graders we had the privilege of going to the high school library, which was something quite exciting because we got to see the high school students. In the eighth grade we had our first taste of changing classes. We really felt important that year. We started the year off with a big bang, a formal Christmas party was given at the Policeman’s Club. We got our first genuine taste of high school life as Freshmen. We were allowed to choose our own subjects and change classes. At the end of the year we had a class party at the Youth Center. As Sophomores we were looked upon more favorably by the teachers and students. At the end of the year we had a class party in the old cafeteria. In our Junior year we really began to take a part in things. We had five junior marshalls and other students that belonged to theBeta Club, Dramatics Club, Glee Club, and the F.H.A. Club. We had two boys to win all-county honors in football and one all-county baseball player, Raymond Pennington. The climax of our Junior year was the Junior-Senior Banquet which we gave in honor of the Seniors at the Starmount Country Club. The theme of the banquet was graduation and the little paper boys and girls, dressed in graduation gowns dotted the tables making a very pretty picture. Memories of that night will never be forgotten by our class. The Senior class got off to a good start this year. We welcomed back an old senior teacher, Mr. Bolen. We also had three newcoaches, Mr. Brookband, Mr. Bryson, a former graduate of Bessemer, and Mr. Phibbs. Our football team was made up of 12 Seniors of the first 13. This team went on to win the County Championship. They remained unscored on in the county and undefeated in all games. Three of the senior players, Raymond Pennington, Jack Simpson, and Harold Smith, made all county honors and Raymond Pennington went on to play in the Shrine Bowl Game at Charlotte. Several of our boys have been offered college scholarships. Our annual got underway the first of the year and we were sure that it would be the best yet, and it is. We also had quite a few television stars in our class. Our whole football team was on television as well as the Dramatics Club, which gave a skit from the play, A Girl Named Pat”, which was a great success. We took a day off from school and made a trip to the mountains. It took two buses to carry this huge and great class of seniors. We really had a good time. We looked forward to the Washington Trip and our last school banquet, the Junior-Senior Banquet, which came in the Spring. Our school life has really been a happy one and it is with regretful sentiments that we leave this, our second home for twelve years.
