ln BOYS STATE Boys State 1 a functron sponsored by the Amerrcan Legron The purpose IS to create a democratrc sense of responsxbllrty and to teach the pr1nc1ples of State Govern ment Thrs rs accomplrshed by srmulatrng the State Government rn every possrble way Delegates from all over the state act as c1t1zens run for offrce become the polrtrcal and party leaders and do all other dutres whtch the crtlzens of a state do Drngo Boys State rs a full week s program of events Thls year approxrmately three hundred twenty boys arrrved at the Untversrty of Marne campus Sunday afternoon The formatlon of towns countres and pohtrcal partres provrde the basrs for further po lltrcal and socral organrzatlon I was a member of the Federahst party a cltrzen of the town of Cutler located rn Corbett Hall ln the county of Weston and of course a CIIIZCH of the State of Dtrrgo Almost rmmedtately after regrstratxon campargn par tres were busy puttrng up posters everywhere Frrends were made easrly and qurckly General assembly was held Sunday nrght Guest speakers gave talks on the prrncrples of town government followed by rnformal town meetmgs and campargnmg for county and town offrces Monday mornrng was the real begrnnrng of a week packed w1th fun sportsmanshrp and tests An average day at Boys State CODSISIS of berng awakened sharply at 6 00 army style roll call cleanrng quarters announcements breakfast mspectton of quarters by staff general assembly datly tests noted speakers polttrcal organrztng drnner polttrcal actxvrty sports roll call supper more polrtrcal actrv rty lectures and campargmng I found Boys State to be more than a place to learn polrtrcs and state government It IS a place to thoroughly enyoy yourself by takmg part rn the actrvrtres and playrng the roll of a crtrzen a town leader a party leader a legrslator a commxssroner or perhaps even the governor Enthusrasm and competrtlon run hrgh It rs greatly ln sprred by the fact that some of Marne s leadmg offrcrals act as gurdance rnstructors and speakers Some of these were selectmen town managers Marne senators and rep resentatrves frncludrng the Clerk of the Marne House of Representauves and the Secre tary and Presldent of the Marne Senatej a Probate Judge a member of the Executrve Counctl The Marne Tax Commrssroner The Attorney General and the Governor of the State of Marne Edmund S Muskre 1 E' Wll '

WW The lrbrary IS one room rn our school bulldxng whrcn rs busy nearly every perrod Thlrty per cent of our students use the hbrary every day for studymg reference bor rowmg books and browsmg We have new books every month through the Junror Lit erary Gutld Hrstorrcal novels of the Cavalcade serles and many other well known teen age books have been purchased These plus grfts from the State Lrbrary and Falmouth Memorral Llbrary total 125 new books thrs year Every srx weeks we look forward to the comrng of the bookmobrle Each class goes out separately and everyone hunts frantrcally for a book whtch he thrnks he w1ll hke One student ltbrarran IS rn charge of the lr brary each perxod These are Raymond Marks Robert Lrttlefreld Audrey Drake Carolyn Fowl er Max1ne Hardmg Judy Meader and Al1ce McK1el Mrss Aaskov ftop centerj over the past two years has done much to organrze our lrbrary The Dewey Decrmal System ts used the ftctlon books are rn alphabetrcal order the card cata log has a good start and many other lmprove ments have been made We are grateful to Mrss Aaskov for the ume and effort she has con trlbuted f 9 1 - . - ' - - . At Boys State there were two mam partres the Federalrsts and the Natronalrsts the remarnder were Independents In the Federalrst party I got to be a State Commrt teeman and on the Gubernatorral Platform Commlttee It was our duty to mfluence the Independents to vote Federalrst One of the brggest events of the week was the State Electron where our candrdate for governor Gerald Amero won I got to be one of the thtrty senators Our party had a majorrty of two to one tn the Senate wrth a good majortty rn the house also our party was well rn control The remamder of the two days at Boys State after the State Electron was de voted to the hearmg of and votrng on b1lls submrtted by vanous legrslators I had the very great honor of bemg appornted Charrman of The Taxatron Commrttee whrch rs a Jomt standrng commrttee composed of both senators and representatrves To me thrs was the most mterestmg and colorful part of the week s actrvmes because of our excellent rnstructors and lrvely debates In conclusron I belreve that the background obtarned at Boys State would be very hard to duplrcate and that rt would be a prrvrlege for any student to go and en Joy rt as I have Robert Lrttlefreld 56 PUPPY for LITTLE IOANIE Joame saw the puppy she wanted as soon as she and her mother entered the pet shop He was rrght up front rn the brg show wrndow hrs llttle black button of a nose pressed agamst the wall of hrs pen The proprretor a lrttle Jolly gray hatred man bustled forward to wart on them Mrs Henderson explarned that they wanted a puppy for Joame The proprretor smlled He IS a cutre rsn t he? He prcked up the lrttle puppy and placed rt rn Joame s arms Oh he s the best dog rn the whole wrde world crred Joame Joame patted and talked to hrm just lrke he were a real person Suddenly the puppy wrrggled out of Joame s arms and scampered across the floor Mrs Henderson speakmg rather sharply sard I can see where he would be hard to handle Ioame s heart sank She had to prove that she could handle the puppy easrly she Just had to! She would just srmply dre 1f she couldn thave that puppy! So she trptoed up to the puppy but every trme she came wrthm rnches of htm he would run away I thmkl know how to handle the puppy sard the proprretor Just watch me He prcked up a folded newspaper walked over to the puppy and he whacked the pup nght across the rear wrth the paper Now you let me prck you up young man he ordered Sure enough' The puppy let hrm do Just that' You see lrttle grrl sard the proprxetor love wrthout drscrplme can be very harmful.
