ln BOYS STATE Boys State 1 a functron sponsored by the Amerrcan Legron The purpose IS to create a democratrc sense of responsxbllrty and to teach the pr1nc1ples of State Govern ment Thrs rs accomplrshed by srmulatrng the State Government rn every possrble way Delegates from all over the state act as c1t1zens run for offrce become the polrtrcal and party leaders and do all other dutres whtch the crtlzens of a state do Drngo Boys State rs a full week s program of events Thls year approxrmately three hundred twenty boys arrrved at the Untversrty of Marne campus Sunday afternoon The formatlon of towns countres and pohtrcal partres provrde the basrs for further po lltrcal and socral organrzatlon I was a member of the Federahst party a cltrzen of the town of Cutler located rn Corbett Hall ln the county of Weston and of course a CIIIZCH of the State of Dtrrgo Almost rmmedtately after regrstratxon campargn par tres were busy puttrng up posters everywhere Frrends were made easrly and qurckly General assembly was held Sunday nrght Guest speakers gave talks on the prrncrples of town government followed by rnformal town meetmgs and campargnmg for county and town offrces Monday mornrng was the real begrnnrng of a week packed w1th fun sportsmanshrp and tests An average day at Boys State CODSISIS of berng awakened sharply at 6 00 army style roll call cleanrng quarters announcements breakfast mspectton of quarters by staff general assembly datly tests noted speakers polttrcal organrztng drnner polttrcal actxvrty sports roll call supper more polrtrcal actrv rty lectures and campargmng I found Boys State to be more than a place to learn polrtrcs and state government It IS a place to thoroughly enyoy yourself by takmg part rn the actrvrtres and playrng the roll of a crtrzen a town leader a party leader a legrslator a commxssroner or perhaps even the governor Enthusrasm and competrtlon run hrgh It rs greatly ln sprred by the fact that some of Marne s leadmg offrcrals act as gurdance rnstructors and speakers Some of these were selectmen town managers Marne senators and rep resentatrves frncludrng the Clerk of the Marne House of Representauves and the Secre tary and Presldent of the Marne Senatej a Probate Judge a member of the Executrve Counctl The Marne Tax Commrssroner The Attorney General and the Governor of the State of Marne Edmund S Muskre 1 E' Wll '
