BESSE BREEZE MY MOST EMBARRASSING MOMENT It happened on a cold Ianuarv n1ght when I stayed at my frlend s house We had just come home from a basketball game and he had dlrected me to the room that was to be m1ne lust go down the hall and take the second room on the r1ght he sa1d As I opened the door I pressed the button to turn on the llght Immedlately there was a brlght blue flash and I knew the llght bulb had blown out I shut the door behlnd me and declded not to bother my frlend for a l1ght bulb I could see that there were two beds 111 the room and I took the one near est to me because I thought that It looked as 1f there were somethlng p1led on the other bed I lay down to go to sleep when I heard a sound It was not a loud or gruff sound but a low wheezy sound almost llke hard breathmg Then I heard the nolse of toenalls outslde my door and I declded that It was probably the1r dog I thought about It no more and as I was t1red I dropped off to sleep qu1ckly After some t1me I was awakened agaln by somethmg and once more I heard the no1se But thlllklllg of the dog agaln I went back to sleep As mormng came I awoke w1th the sunsh1ne pourmg lnto my room I gazed out the wlndow for sometlme and upon hearmg a gentle rustlmg sound from the other s1de of the room I turned over just IH tlme to see a pretty g1r11n the other bed open her eyes and look at me Well' she Sald I gave her no t1me to finlsh but ran out of the room Then addlng much to my embarrassment rushed back lnto the room for I had forgotten my clothes She was st1ll gulplng an exasperated Well as I grabbed my clothes and made out wlth them I ran 1HtO my frlend s room who had been awakened by the nolse I told h1m of the 1nc1dent and what the glrl looked l1ke He began to laugh and said That sounds llke my slster s g1rlfr1end you are descrlblng I sald But why dxdn t you g1V9 me a dlfferent room from that one'7 Then I dlscovered my mlstake I had taken the second room on the left 1n stead of the second on the rlght W1ll I ever learn that Im really left handed Feorge Fould 52 Old Custom Mother has a beaver coat and Junlor has a fishlng boat Slster has a brand new slelgh and father has a year to pay Nancy Blanchard 53 1 . . , 7 ' .1 ' sc , ' H ' v 7 l A , . - . . 9 7 7 - 9 ' 5 5 . , . 1 . 7 9 9 cc H ' ' ' - ' 7 . BESSE BREEZE surpr1se her mothe1 by buy1ng a IIILG l1ttle farm 111 the country eXfte1 1 vear s work Mar1e had been able to save about one hundred and fifty dollars Mlss Plerson l1ked Mar1e for her work was done thoroughly and S3tlS factorlly Mar1e had told MISS Plerson of her plan to buv a farm One dav near Mar1e s blrthday MISS PIQTSOII handed her an envelope on wh1ch It sa1d Happy Blrthday Mar1e tore lt open and there lay a check for four hundred and fifty dollars Gratefully Mar1e thanked her Then she hurr1ed out and made a down payment of five hundred dollars for a two acre country farm w1th a five room house Upon arr1v1ng home she told her mother of her explolts that day The next day the famlly moved the1r l1ttle b1t of furnlture to the new home Down deep IH her heart Mrs Jones was thanklng God for sendlng such a helpful daughter and for prov1d1ng shelter Falth Hendsbee 54 REFUGEES By the roadslde 1n Korea lay the frozen body of a barefooted llttle boy face down Past thlS stlff frozen Hgure moved a torrent of refugees carrymg what ever possesslons they could balanced on the1r heads or strapped to These exhausted refugees fled southward s1lently leavmg the1r bab1es and the1r aged to d1e by the roadslde Along the Wlhdlng road men women and chlldren stop to bury the1r deceased Truck loads of orphans pass the fleemg refugees to be flown to Qheju Island where they Wlll be fed and taught As these trucks pass men and women try to hang onto them but w1th out suc cess Fmally empty trucks come along to p1ck up the half starved and transport them to what they hope IS a better place at least out of the zone of battle We here at home do not fully real1ze the pa1n and suffermg wh1ch IS en dured 1n Korea These 1nnocent people are 111 the mldst of confus1on Day after day some are k1lled and the1r homes burned only because of th1S perhaps unnecessary war We must understand that they are 1nnocent v1ct1ms of a war waged by those who are Hghtmg for the1r form of government as we are for ours We are fortunate that we are not the people who have to Hee from the war strlcken terr1tory and that lt 1sn t our homes that are bemg burned A con slderable amount of p1tv should be shown toward the mnocent people trapped 111 the Korean terrltory The Un1ted States has always come through Wlth v1cto1y ThlS tlme Wlll be no except1on Soon all over the world there w1ll be peace once more Nancy Blanchard 53 22 their tired backs.
