BESSE BREEZE 21 w1th one store a barber shop and n1nety lnhabltants As the small boat pulled up to the slde of the pler and was roped to the posts a man with a small package m hls hand Jumped off qu1ckly He went hurrledly up the street whlch was almost deserted and turned the corner by the barber shop I w1th bag and baggage crawled over the slde onto the boat I had to wander around a few mmutes to find the C '1pta1n who told me where to put my bag Wlthlll a half hour or so we pulled away from the pler and out lI1tO the blue space called the Fulf The day was golng to be one of those warm sunny days typlcal of the I oulslana Coast We hadn t gone far when I lost sight of San Olego Island whlch was my home Soon we would catch slght of the mfunland but then we would stlll have to go mland a llttle to get to New Orleans It was about eleven o clock and we were still on shlp when I spled the ame man that I had seen runnmg up the street back home By one o clock we reached the publlc landmg m New Orleans We all plled off mcludmg the man We were met on the p1er by a Customs officer He looked both me and my baggage over closely Although the other man had no baggage he was searched just the same I notlced that the offlcer called hlm Shxfty Belng told to take off hls shoes the man d1d so The ofhcer took them and tapped the soles Wlth h1S l1ttle hammer To my surprlse the heel came off and 1ns1de were several small capsules The officer lmmedlately handcuffed the man another dope smuggler had been caught R xlph Meader 54 PROVIDENCE Smce Marle s father had left whxch was shortly after Davy her younger brother had been bo1n her famrly had gone through very hard tlmes and now had to l1Y8 ln the Clty slums Marle was the oldest one of the five chlldren so It fell on her to help her mother Mrs Jones support the famlly She Hmshed grammar school when she was fourteen vears old but could 1 ot go to hlgh school As qulckly as posslble she got a Job helpmg a rlch old mald MISS Plerson do her house work She got a dollar and a half ex ery day and had Saturday afternoons and Sundays off Her mother dld vxashmgs and 11Ol11I1gS for the nelghbors but could not earn more than three dollars a dax To eke out a l1v1ng for the famlly Marle turned over five dollars a week and kept three dollars 111 a Jar she had 1n her bedroom Marle s mother d1d not know about th1s Jar of money Marle was savlng to . f Q . , . ,c . BESSE BREEZE MY MOST EMBARRASSING MOMENT It happened on a cold Ianuarv n1ght when I stayed at my frlend s house We had just come home from a basketball game and he had dlrected me to the room that was to be m1ne lust go down the hall and take the second room on the r1ght he sa1d As I opened the door I pressed the button to turn on the llght Immedlately there was a brlght blue flash and I knew the llght bulb had blown out I shut the door behlnd me and declded not to bother my frlend for a l1ght bulb I could see that there were two beds 111 the room and I took the one near est to me because I thought that It looked as 1f there were somethlng p1led on the other bed I lay down to go to sleep when I heard a sound It was not a loud or gruff sound but a low wheezy sound almost llke hard breathmg Then I heard the nolse of toenalls outslde my door and I declded that It was probably the1r dog I thought about It no more and as I was t1red I dropped off to sleep qu1ckly After some t1me I was awakened agaln by somethmg and once more I heard the no1se But thlllklllg of the dog agaln I went back to sleep As mormng came I awoke w1th the sunsh1ne pourmg lnto my room I gazed out the wlndow for sometlme and upon hearmg a gentle rustlmg sound from the other s1de of the room I turned over just IH tlme to see a pretty g1r11n the other bed open her eyes and look at me Well' she Sald I gave her no t1me to finlsh but ran out of the room Then addlng much to my embarrassment rushed back lnto the room for I had forgotten my clothes She was st1ll gulplng an exasperated Well as I grabbed my clothes and made out wlth them I ran 1HtO my frlend s room who had been awakened by the nolse I told h1m of the 1nc1dent and what the glrl looked l1ke He began to laugh and said That sounds llke my slster s g1rlfr1end you are descrlblng I sald But why dxdn t you g1V9 me a dlfferent room from that one'7 Then I dlscovered my mlstake I had taken the second room on the left 1n stead of the second on the rlght W1ll I ever learn that Im really left handed Feorge Fould 52 Old Custom Mother has a beaver coat and Junlor has a fishlng boat Slster has a brand new slelgh and father has a year to pay Nancy Blanchard 53 1 . . , 7 ' .1 ' sc , ' H ' v 7 l A , . - . . 9 7 7 - 9 ' 5 5 . , . 1 . 7 9 9 cc H ' ' ' - ' 7 .
