BESSE BREEZE 21 w1th one store a barber shop and n1nety lnhabltants As the small boat pulled up to the slde of the pler and was roped to the posts a man with a small package m hls hand Jumped off qu1ckly He went hurrledly up the street whlch was almost deserted and turned the corner by the barber shop I w1th bag and baggage crawled over the slde onto the boat I had to wander around a few mmutes to find the C '1pta1n who told me where to put my bag Wlthlll a half hour or so we pulled away from the pler and out lI1tO the blue space called the Fulf The day was golng to be one of those warm sunny days typlcal of the I oulslana Coast We hadn t gone far when I lost sight of San Olego Island whlch was my home Soon we would catch slght of the mfunland but then we would stlll have to go mland a llttle to get to New Orleans It was about eleven o clock and we were still on shlp when I spled the ame man that I had seen runnmg up the street back home By one o clock we reached the publlc landmg m New Orleans We all plled off mcludmg the man We were met on the p1er by a Customs officer He looked both me and my baggage over closely Although the other man had no baggage he was searched just the same I notlced that the offlcer called hlm Shxfty Belng told to take off hls shoes the man d1d so The ofhcer took them and tapped the soles Wlth h1S l1ttle hammer To my surprlse the heel came off and 1ns1de were several small capsules The officer lmmedlately handcuffed the man another dope smuggler had been caught R xlph Meader 54 PROVIDENCE Smce Marle s father had left whxch was shortly after Davy her younger brother had been bo1n her famrly had gone through very hard tlmes and now had to l1Y8 ln the Clty slums Marle was the oldest one of the five chlldren so It fell on her to help her mother Mrs Jones support the famlly She Hmshed grammar school when she was fourteen vears old but could 1 ot go to hlgh school As qulckly as posslble she got a Job helpmg a rlch old mald MISS Plerson do her house work She got a dollar and a half ex ery day and had Saturday afternoons and Sundays off Her mother dld vxashmgs and 11Ol11I1gS for the nelghbors but could not earn more than three dollars a dax To eke out a l1v1ng for the famlly Marle turned over five dollars a week and kept three dollars 111 a Jar she had 1n her bedroom Marle s mother d1d not know about th1s Jar of money Marle was savlng to . f Q . , . ,c . BESSE BREEZE seen he1 befole she came home and had persuaded h 1 to buv also VK hen she saw that her husband had bought a book just hke hers she felt 1nd1gnant As they were Staflllg at each other and thlnkmg about the mlstake that thev had made she started toward h1m exclalmmg Why husband we can No we can t elther lnterrupted Mr Watson The man IS off on the tram before tlns Qonfound lt' I could k1ll the fellow I would llke to see h1m agaln Why there he goes to the depot now exclalmed Mrs Watson pO11lt1I1g out of the wlndow at the figure of the book agent mak1ng for the tram But lt s too late to catch h1m and my feet are not dressed so I can t go after h1m exclalmed Mr Watson Just then Mr Stevens a nelghbor drove by So Mr Watson pounded on the WlI'ldOWp3I19 ln a frantlc manner almost fI'1gl1t6l1ll1g the horse of Mr Stevens Here Stevens' he shouted You re hltched up' Won t you run your horse down to the tram and hold that book agent t1ll I come down? BESSE BREEZE surpr1se her mothe1 by buy1ng a IIILG l1ttle farm 111 the country eXfte1 1 vear s work Mar1e had been able to save about one hundred and fifty dollars Mlss Plerson l1ked Mar1e for her work was done thoroughly and S3tlS factorlly Mar1e had told MISS Plerson of her plan to buv a farm One dav near Mar1e s blrthday MISS PIQTSOII handed her an envelope on wh1ch It sa1d Happy Blrthday Mar1e tore lt open and there lay a check for four hundred and fifty dollars Gratefully Mar1e thanked her Then she hurr1ed out and made a down payment of five hundred dollars for a two acre country farm w1th a five room house Upon arr1v1ng home she told her mother of her explolts that day The next day the famlly moved the1r l1ttle b1t of furnlture to the new home Down deep IH her heart Mrs Jones was thanklng God for sendlng such a helpful daughter and for prov1d1ng shelter Falth Hendsbee 54 REFUGEES By the roadslde 1n Korea lay the frozen body of a barefooted llttle boy face down Past thlS stlff frozen Hgure moved a torrent of refugees carrymg what ever possesslons they could balanced on the1r heads or strapped to These exhausted refugees fled southward s1lently leavmg the1r bab1es and the1r aged to d1e by the roadslde Along the Wlhdlng road men women and chlldren stop to bury the1r deceased Truck loads of orphans pass the fleemg refugees to be flown to Qheju Island where they Wlll be fed and taught As these trucks pass men and women try to hang onto them but w1th out suc cess Fmally empty trucks come along to p1ck up the half starved and transport them to what they hope IS a better place at least out of the zone of battle We here at home do not fully real1ze the pa1n and suffermg wh1ch IS en dured 1n Korea These 1nnocent people are 111 the mldst of confus1on Day after day some are k1lled and the1r homes burned only because of th1S perhaps unnecessary war We must understand that they are 1nnocent v1ct1ms of a war waged by those who are Hghtmg for the1r form of government as we are for ours We are fortunate that we are not the people who have to Hee from the war strlcken terr1tory and that lt 1sn t our homes that are bemg burned A con slderable amount of p1tv should be shown toward the mnocent people trapped 111 the Korean terrltory The Un1ted States has always come through Wlth v1cto1y ThlS tlme Wlll be no except1on Soon all over the world there w1ll be peace once more Nancy Blanchard 53 22 their tired backs.
