There would surely have to be an BEOITLIC war then If not then we mlght as well surrender and llve un der Commumst rule Jxmmy Shaddox 61 AN ADVENTURE ILL NEVER FORGET I was walkxng through the woods a short whlle ago search1ng for w1ld flowers and v1nes for a progect 1n Sclence After an hour or so I sat down on the rlver bank to rest A I sat there I looked out over the notlced somethmg pecuhar stlckmg up out of the water I stood up and looked closer As I d1d so I could see the formatlon of a hand I was terrlfied Not knowmg what to do I hurrled to my brother s boat that was tled up close to shore My mmd was blank as I rowed qulckly toward the hand I kept th1nk1ng Do you suppose someone had drowned? A shlver went up and down my back as I drew closer to the hand I poked at It wxth one of the oars to see lt go under and bob back up agam I closed my eyes and reached down 1nto the water and caught the fingers ln my hand I opened my eyes and gave a yank It was a hand alrlght a hand from a clothmgstore dummy Larry Colllns 62 MY EBON REX' P0lS8d where the rlm of the pur ple earth met and merged Wlth the fiery arc of the sunset sky stood the great stall1on He was huge and black lmed IH gold agamst the sky hls long mane and ta1l wmd tossed and brassy hued Hxs t1ny ears fllcked nervously checklng every sound and I knew hls crlmson lmed nostrxls were flarlng as he snuffed the sage scented wmds Hls herd of mares and colts would be below h1m ln some sheltered tw1l1ght valley whxle he guarded them from all ap- proachlng danger As I watched from the seat of my truck IH the valley I thrllled agam to h1s wild beauty and physxcal per fectlon The perfect small head thlckly arched neck masslve chest and long clean llmbs were those of some long dead Spamsh stall1on I had heard of throwbacks like hxm but never had I seen one I stood bes1de the truck and watched a black sllhouette agamst the ever darkenlng sky The wmd was blowlng at my back and sud denly I wondered lf he mlght Just posslbly hear my whlstle Flngers at my llps I blew a loud blast The answer was instantaneous He wheeled to face the sound ears for ward then reared hlgh 1nto the a1r DOl1Sh6d hooves tearmg the sky to tatters H1s answer came sharp and clear agalnst the wmd Then he was gone h1S fleet hooves spurnlng the ground as he melted lnto the valley shadows He remembered' And the bond between us was stlll strong enough to brmg h1m to me after three long years , . . n , . . . g ' . , . . . , , , . .
