THE NAVILLUS SCHOOL NEWS School opened w1th a mad rush per usual w1th everybody clamorlng for back seats However after the pile up had been dlspersed ln the back of the mam room It could be seen that the Semors elther because of then physlcal brawn or because of their superlor attitude were safely estab lished ln that part of the room whlch has always been unofficlally consld ered thelr private realm but 1nto whlch on the first day of every year the underclassmen attempt to lntrude themselves but never seem to succeed After the regular teachers had all been lntroduced to the Freshmen and to those Sophomores who had forgotten them we were all pleased to meet our new English and Language teacher Mlss Allce Brennan of Dover N H who must have been ln a fog cr somethlng when she ever dld such a rash thmg as to agree to come to B H S as a teacher We were very very sorry not to find our beloved M1 s Schmidt among the ranks and we hope she has found a fine position elsewhere Durlng thlS year Miss Brennan has found her place ln our hearts and we have been vers glad to have her wlth us We were also surprised to find that Mrs Knlght our music teacher and our orchestra leader had accepted a posltlon ln Washington D C and that th1s year we were to haxe a male teacher Mr Wescott to fill her position The Semors began the year by msnstmg on belng treated wlth abso lute respect at all tlmes by underclassmen and although thls pollcy did not appeal much to the Sophomores and Juniors I mlght add that the Fresh boys and girls at least for the first week The Student Councll held lts first meetmg soon after school began wlth lts members lncludlng Carolyn Belanger and Carleton Guptxll repre sentlng the Senlor class Janice Wentworth and Donald Gulle representing the Junior class Patrlcxa Jones and Clem Nlelson representlng the Soph omore class and Exelyn Guptlll and Roland Burgess representmg the Freshman class This year we 1n1t1ated a new mov1e program ln Berwlck High WhlCh w1ll enable us to obtain better educatlonal and mlscellaneous films for the benefit of both the grammar school and the high school This plan pro vldes for a serles of elght films to be shown at our convenlence at any tlme durmg the school year and are sponsored by the lndlvldual classes at the rate of two apiece We have trled to choose a varied assortment of films provldlng a touch of humor but emphaslzlng the educatlonal class The films were chosen through the cooperation of the Student Councll and the class officers and were as follows Last of the Mohzcans Gef ommo Campus Confesszons- I Wanted Wmqs' Caught m the Draft Wake Island Young Mr Lmcoln and Chavlze McCa1 thy Detective On October 9 1943 the Semors gave the Freshmen thelr ofiiclal wel comlng mto B H S via the Freshman Receptlon whlch was also the open ing event of the year This came as a cllmax to a week of mlld but effec tive hazlng conslstmg of such trlvlal thlngs as maklng the Freshmen bow and properly address the Semors upon meetmg one of same as Mr. Gup till or Mlss Parker etc and showlng utmost dlgnlty and respect at ,,,. .N.....,.....,..........,s.,.,,..,.-...,..,.....,..,..,..x..s..,..,..,..,..,........
