THE NAVII LUS First you break youi back digging worms for bait When you have finally succeeded ln procuring enough of these senseless creatures to hold out for a day s fishing you drive a long yyay over the roughest road this s1de of West Eyeball until you reach your favorite trout stream You then back vour car 1nto a tree trylng to get off the 1oad to let other automobiles pass while vou are fishing Then you are ready to face the terrible tortures of trout fishing You select a fat Ju1cy yvorm and stlck him on the hook He wiggles a lot but that only bothers female anglers You stumble down a steep bank to tht edge of the stream and drop your l1ne 1n the yvater Nothing happens so you move downstream fishing yvhen you can see the brook through the mare of bushes and alders After four hours of stompmg around in this forest primeval you beglll to feel weary and disgusted at not having 1 single nibble Only your great strength patience and the thought that you may get a trout in a little yyhlle keeps you from screaming tearing your hair and rushing through the bushes frothlng at the mouth btck to yvhere the car is located The mosquitoes then spot you They have a race to see which one can suck the most blood out of you in '70 seconds These annoy ing creatures keep you slapping perpetually until your arms ache and your carcass ls coy ered yv1th lumps and bruises A twlg snaps you in the eye vou loose a boot ln the mud you hook your own ear in a wild cast your line snaps when you get it snarled in ft thorn bush all in all you are prettv nearly a wreck Finally fate takes a yyonderful turn You feel your line yerk the tip of the rod bends slightly you tinally have a bite In your mmd you can yisuallze a beautiful fat trout about a foot long syy allowing the bait And then vou yank h1m out He flies off from the hook and ltnds in the bushes behlnd you After an hour s search on your hands and knees you find him You burst into heart rendmg, sobs You pick up a club and start beating yourself over the head vyith it The beautiful trout you had pictured in your mmd 15 nothing, but a scrayvny pickerel yyho looks like he had been stary ed to death You giab your rod which had been leaning against a tiee and heave it in the brook then streaming profanity you lump in the brook after the pole The shock of the cold water brings you back to your yumbled senses you grope alound in the freezing yvater and finally re trleve your pole Then dragging your dripping carcass up on the bank you lay gasping for air When vou haye enough strength to s1t erect you turn the air blue yv1th profanity cussing the fish the brook the bushes the yyhole world and eyeryone in it After an hour of this horr1ble babbling with supreme effort you pull your shattered body together and start to fish again promlslng yourself you yy on t lose control of your smoldering temper again Your patience is then rewarded vou get a bite and vou pull 1n a Weak trout which Just passes the law requlrements This makes you intensely happy Even though the trout IS a 1uven1le you chuck him in the fish basket and call It a day BOB PRAY 44 - , .snsox..X..s.1s..-Q1-x.-x1.s.1s..s..s.-suxns.-susvsns..x..s.-s.-sus.-S.-x.-Q.-sus 1 1 1 1 1 ' y ' 1 ' , . , , , 1 1 1 1 . . . . , ' D 7 I Y' A 1 , . , . t . , 1 r 1 ' .
