Lend an ear folks for we will present some facts about the Home Economics Course as released by Miss Lucille Cretella, supervisor. The aims of the course are to make the joy of living possible, to develop wholesome personalities and to participate successfully in family and community life, to show the relation between homemaking and leisure time activities, to develop wage-earning possibilities closely allied to homemaking, and to teach the girls the technique of art for homes. The subjects include nutrition. clothing construction, personality, hobbies, consumer buying, budgeting, child care, personal hygiene, etc. Each student works out a home project. The purpose of this is to help stud- ents solve their own problems. Visits to the home are made by the teacher to confer with the parents and the students. The advantage of the Vocational Home Economics course are numerous. It prepares girls for real life situations and furnishes credits for those taking work in nursing and dietetics. it 1 ll -k Thifiv-seven 'A' Blue and White iitiittttttttittttti 1945 A Home EC Bazaar Above is a tvoical example of several bazaars that were held durinq the vear by ambitious Home EC students under the direction of Miss Lucille Cretella. She has constantly stressed good health habits including nutrition, posture, and grace. Under her enthusiastic and capable leadership the girls' gym activities have become a major part of the school program. - CHEERLEADING SQUAD First Row: Louise Arndt, Phyllis Daniels, Helen Hemlock, Ellen Rea- Trioni. gan, Betty Melchiore. S. football and basketball season this year. The three varsity members that will leave this year are Shirley Kehl. Marie Dorak, and Betty Melchiorre. The vacancies Will be filled by members of the reserve cheerleading group. During the football season the girls' outfits consisted of blue slacks and white sweaters. Although not too feminine in appearance, the girls didn't suffer from the cold. Comfort first! The uniform worn during the basketball season was a blue and white check skirt with shoulder straps worn over a long sleeve white blouse. New cheers were taught the student body. The cheerleaders wanted to eliminate the com- plaints against those originated centuries ago. There was much improvement in the cheering sections this year. Indian Club Drill: Kneeling-Midge Fuller, Naomi Parker, Mary Cocklin. Standing-Lucy Kleckner, Yvonne Seriff, Virginia Iordan. Drills Wand drills are especially fine for building both the large and small muscles of the body. Wooden wands are used for class work. These measure about one yard in length and three-fourths of an inch in diameter. The exhibition wands have the same measurements but are hollow metal rods. The picture shows the Girls' Gym Team forming a wand design. Indian Clubs are also equipment for drill work. Any number of people may participate in a club drill, the larger the group, the richer the appearance. The clulbs are fine for developing muscles of the shoulder girdle and wrist flexibility. Rhythm and neuro-muscular skill are required to manipulate them. Clubs used in class weigh one and one-half pounds and are made of hard wood. These can be decorated for novel drills. The picture above shows three of the girls kneeling and holding the clubs in a carrying position. Girls standing on the sides have the clubs in a parallel position and the girl in the center has the clubs at a full arm outward circle position. Basketball B. H. S. girls discovered this year that basketball wasn't just a dry old game. Miss Collins insisted that the girls in every class learn the rules, scoring, timing, and duties of the officials. The results were that the girls felt the game was fun because they knew all about it. Competition was carried on between several teams within each of the seven gym classes. Tumbling The Girls' Gym team was organized in February 1944 by Miss Collins. Its activities include tumbling, stunts, calisthenics, drills, folk dances and marching. The above pictures depict some of the excellent neuro-muscular skill that tumbling develops. All are demonstrations of balances. The left picture shows a body supported' in mid-air and requires unique muscle control by both partici- pants. The middle one shows two girls doing a hand stand on their knees. The bottom individuals are supports and the center person is the holding support. The picture to the right is a three point balance and was portrayed in a recent issue of Life Magazine. B. H. S. girls developed the skill in a short time. History tells us that manipulating the body in feats of skill such as springing. revolving, balancing, supporting, and other unusual positions was in a highly developed stage in ancient times and has paintings and sculpture depict tumbling ancient Egypt. Surprising as it may seem art and were credited with giving more ' carried through to the present. Early as a part of religious ceremonies in women were the professionals at this expression to dancing and tumbling because of gracefulness and charm. Contrary to many opinions this type of exercise is beneficial to both male and female and is not too strenuous for girls. lt is a matter of making the body listen to the commands of the mind rather than strength. Strength is developed through the exercises. of course, but it isn't just plain strength that determines one's ability to do them. if if if 1 'Y it Ihr Foffv-me 'k u 4' ll 'O' it I Blue and White iittttttttt il' 1945 Pictured above: Shirley Kehl, catcher, and Mary Lee Udstad, batter, Spring Activities Spring activities for girls include track, dancing, out-door games, and softball, SOFTBALL Softball is the chief interest as soon as Mr. Sun pours down some rays of spring warmth. Please, Miss Collins, let us go outside today to play softball, is the request made as early as March lst. However, Miss Collins clings to her steadfast rule'-no outdoor activity before April. Intra-mural softball is conducted for girls. Each class has two teams and then by elimination tournaments the champion team is decided. Baseball is considered a man's game, but softball is a fine sport for girls and they play it well, too, Not only do they play it well, but they also add grace, beauty, and charm to this popular American game. During the past few years girls' professional teams have been organized and have toured the country often giving men's softball teams Woeful defeats. Some B. H. S. girls compare favorably with the average personnel of girls' professional teams. TRACK Track includes running broad jumps, standing broad jumps, 50 yard dashes. and the shot put. These activities are put on an intra-mural basis and the winners selected. OUT-DOOR GAMES Out-door games permit any number of girls to participate at a time. It is an easy way to take care of a large class when all desire activity. Most of these are tagging or catching games such as Hip Tag, Prison Base, or Three Deep. DANCING Dancing is a year 'round activity. How surprised and delighted the girls are when they can have round dancing in gym class. The girls bring their records to school and these are played over the sound system. Ah, but that swing music can he heard only in the gym, Too bad! VOLLEY BALL This is an indoor sport carried on throughout the year. As yet the girls haven't had the spirit necessary for intra-class volley ball games. Let's have some competition, Sophomores, Iuniors, and Seniors! CLASSIFIED ACTIVITY Some girls, because of minor physical defects, cannot take the regular program of physical education. Everything possible is being done to provide these few individuals with non- strenuous activity and recreation that they can do and enjoy. It is hoped that shuffleboard and quoits will soon be available for physical education classes. These two games are forms of modified activity and can be used indoors or out. 4 4 4 -ul -an--owo-Ai wa.: -mf my xxx--0-viii, 1945 iitttttttittttttttti' Blue and White Girls' Glee Club First Row: Emily Kotzo, Charlotte Kinkade, Arline Sitler, Evelyn Croop, Mary Ellen Paden, Marjorie Slusser, Gladys Williams, Betty Sterling, Dorothy Marr, Martha Marshman, lane Sloan, Second Row: Bessie Belles, Betty Heckman, Helen Krawicaski, Virginia jordan. This project was worked out by Ted Torsella, David Stimeling, and Donald Follmer, and is the product of many hours of work. The one model is of the room worked out to scale with the furnishings and color scheme as of the present. The lights are too high, there is too little cup- board space, the tables are scratched and scarred from years of hard usage, and the whole room is as common and ordinary as any other classroom. The next model is of the art room, again worked out to scale, but with a neutral color scheme and modern furnishings. The furniture, walls, and ceiling are in soft tones of gray, with blackboards the same color as the walls. Vocational Agriculture Students The Berwick High School authorities have recognized the importance of agriculture and the training of their rural students in this field by introducing a course in Vocational Agriculture. Because farming is a complex combination of many agricultural skills and abilities, the students are instructed in the various jobs of farming as they are carried out in practice Frequent visits to the most successful farms where these jobs are being done properly enable the student to see the proper methods of management. Outstanding in the Agricultural course is the home project. It offers the stud- ent an excellent opportunity to put into practice those improved methods of production and marketing which make successful farmers. The project is a productive enterprise undertaken on the home farm under the supervision of the instructor and with the consent and cooperation of the parents. The student is confronted with the actual practice of record keeping. An official project record book includes all the essential records such as labor, expenses, receipts, tContinued on following pagel +i+'H-'vw SMY-Seven ttlfvlw-ivy-Hvvvvvv Blue and White 1945 Vocational Agriculture Continued inventories, and a financial summary. It also includes space for a carefully pre- pared plan of the project, a diary of important activities and event, a story to be Written at the end of the project, and an analysis of factors determining the efficiency of the boy's management. A four year course in agriculture adapted to the needs of the farm boys in the Berwick area will include the study of poultry, vegetable gardening, farm crops, dairying, animal husbandry, fruit growing, farm forestry, farm manage- ment, and farm mechanics, Farm mechanics will include practice in woodwork. forge work, electrict welding, lathe operation, drill press operation. and ma- chinery repair. Right behind them strolled four other new- comers who also decided to stay-for a dif- ferent reason. This quartet included Misses Violet Gri g, Muriel Engleke, Dorothy Sav- age, and Ruth Merrion, who had been en- gaged to fill vacancies in the faculty. Miss Engleke was the first gym instructress ever to teach at B.H.S. Miss Iennie Birth and Mr. Roger Davis were also among the new faces in the teach- ers receiving line for the Class of '45, Miss Birth had recently returned from a sabbatical leave spent along the Western Coast and Alaska. Mr. Davis had visited places of in- terest in Alaska, the West, and Florida, For one long week the Superior Sophs inflicted humiliation upon the pea green frosh. Orders of the week were: l. Monday--Both boys and girls were to wear dark glasses and paper hats. 2. Wednesday-Boys were to wear lip- stick and part their hair in the middle. The girls were to be enveloped in men's trousers. 3. Thursday-Boys were to turn shirts backwards and girls had to wear boys' ties. In retribution, the s mpathetic Iuniors eased the humiliation of Freshman week by sponsoring a welcome party for the '45ers. At this event Arthur Amdt and Yvonne S5225 were elected to reign as Mr. and Mrs, Officers elected to head the Freshman Class were: Arthur Arndt, Ir. ....,..... President Richard Kile ..,,. . . . Precautions taken this year against air raid attacks were the air raid drills practiced in B.H,S. The Iunior Class, as usual, entertained the aging seniors in the annual Iunior-Senior Prom at West Side Park on May 13th. Don Haines won literarv honors for his story, The Last Mile, which won the Freshman story contest. Weddings seemed to enjoy a spell of pop- ularity with the faculty with the following succumbing to Master Cu id's arrows: Miss Ruth Fairchilds to Mr. Frank Hagenbuch: Mr. Harold Border to Miss Betty Dent: and Mr. Harold Lanterman to Miss Dorothy Schekler. Mr. Ray McBride's engagement to Miss Edna Keller was announced also. At the end of the Frosh year, Martha Houck was awarded the Freshman scholar- ship award. Among these assemblies was the hypnotist who put many students to sleep causing them to hav: a headache when they awoke. The football team won nine out of ten games: in basketball, the boys received the NVyoming League. District 2 Title, but were defeated by Hazleton at Allentown for reg- ional honors. This year the sophomores had the pleas- ure of inflicting misery and humiliation upon the pea-green freshman who took it on the chin. They really were embarrased with these ideas of jokes and fun. But they felt the same as other classes did when they h .d their chance. Miscellaneous items of note are ns follows: Mr, Habian's class built a new stand at the football field. Booster pins and pencils were sold to help financial conditions of the class. Bowling teams were started at the Elks and Y.M.C.A. They semed to only last a little while. Milk was served to students who wanted it. This had been done years before but had been stopped. The Girl Reserves dissolved and the Sen- ior Service Scouts were organized in its place. A play, Tish, was produced by the Dramatic Club on the new stage. A Iapanese two-man sub visited town as a War Bond Rally. Due to the shortage of metals, the class rings were ordered and were received in the lunior Year. The Drill Team under Miss Ei.gleke's direction, started its second year of service at the football games. Ending the year was the awarding assembly. Under the new set-up Orange Street and Fourteenth Street building accommodate the seventh, eighth, and ninth grades, while the senior high is composed of sophomores, juniors. and seniors. Miss Beatrice Plastow, Mrs. Ginter, Mr. Lee Banghart, and Mr. Carl Davis were welcomed as additions to the faculty of Senior High school. Miss Plastow replaced Miss Lois Remensnyder in the Home Eco- nomics department and Mrs. Ginter was initiated as the vocational and general home economics teacher. During the latter part of the year Miss Plastow was wed to Bernard Byran. Due to the resignation of Mr. M. L. Key- ser, history teacher. Mr. Lee Banghart was advanced from the, grades to fill that capacity. Mr. Carl Davis was elected superviser of the vocational agriculture course which was added this year to the curriculum of the high school. Another nuptial event of the year was that of Miss Dorothy Savage and Mr. Drew Folk. Berwick schools were represented at the Bloomsburg Fair by a booth exhibit which claimed third prize of S25.00. This was the first time in several years that Berwick had participated in the booth exhibit competition. With the encouragement of the cheering squad the Bulldog eleven proceeded to win nine out of ten gridiron tussels, thus copping the Wyoming Valley Championship. The seniors, as usual, supplied the de- mands of the hungry crowds at the football stands. The Dramatic Club under the direction of Miss Mildred Moody was reorganized with Millard Fisher as President. Miss Betty Collins, recentpf graduated from East Stroudsburg State eachers Col- lege, was engaged as the successor to Miss Engleke when the latter left to teach at NVestfield, New Iersev. Miss Collins put into effect a complete turnover of gym classes at Berwick High. Then came that fateful day of Ianuary 26th, when school pupils took the law into their own hands and staged their long re- membered walk-out. The reason for this strike was to impress upon the mind of their elders the determined desire of the students for shorter hours. As a result of this misunderstanding the students were encouraged to organize a Stu- dent Council and through this medium voice their criticisms of school procedures. The Council was formed and Phyllis Trioni elected to fill the chairman's seat. Miss Edna Harter and Mr. Emest Hower were elected by Council members as faculty advisers to oversee the proceedings. The sixteenth annual band concert was received enthusiastically by grade and high school students. Featured guest conductor at the event was Lt. fi.g.j Iames Thurmond of the U. S. Navv School of Music stationed at Washingtoin, D. C. Popular, semi-classi- cal, and classical operatic numbers keynoted the program. Quite a few students entered the armed forces during the year. Among those enlist- ing was a member of the faculty. Mr. Elmer McKechnie, who was commissioned an En- sign in the U. S. Navy. His teaching posi- tion was filled by his wife. Mr. Emest Hower also resigned in order to take a teaching position at Lancaster, Pa. Miss Kathe Hansen was engaged to teach German in his stead. Warren Hause was awarded first prize in the annual poppy poster contest held for art and mechanical drawing students. To them other senior classes had seemed so old and settled. But the Class of '45 entered their enior year feeling the same as they did when Freshmen. They took a look at the Sophomores and de- cided they looked like midgets or pygmies who belonged in kindergarten. Presiding over the class were the following honorables: Bernard DiPaul ...... ..,.. P resident Doris Naus ..,., Vice President Helen Rusinko .... .... S ecretary Nick DiPasquale ,......... Treasurer Entering the faculty for the new year were Miss Kathe Hansen, Mrs. Elmer McKechnie. Miss Lucille Cretella, and Mr. Lewis Long. Four new instructors were added to teach vocational-industrial courses: Mr. Lloyd Heacock, Mr. Drew Gingher, Mr. Harrison Cameron, and Mr. Herbert Detjen. Mr. Det- ien is the director of vocational-industrial education in Berwick working on the V. E. N. or War Emergency program. His duty is to study the industries of Berwick so that the industrial subjects may be adjusted to fit them. Mr. Ray McBride resigned and Mr. Lee Banghart obtained a leave of absence. They were replaced by Misses Annie Schweppen- heiser and Adrian Masanotti. The student council reorganized after one year of good and faithful service with Don- ald Cope as president. Miss Harter and Mr. Zimmerman were elected advisers to show the members the right paths to travel. The council accomplished many needed reforms around the building during the year, such as ordering a phone booth and replacing soiled Hags with new ones. Again the Tri-Hi-Y and Hi-Y Clubs opened with Ruth Amble and Clarence Herr as chairmen. Many of the Hi-Y boys attend- Ed a conference at Wilkes-Barre in Decem- er. Ranking third in the Wyoming Valley Conference the football team really did their stuff. They lost only one game which was to Hanover. Though the boys didn't win all the games in basketball, what they did do was play interesting and hard fought games all through the season. The girls again came into prominence in the line of sports. Basketball games were played between gym classes. New games were introduced to the classes that may have seemed childish but they were fun. The newly formed gym team was coached by Miss Collins in dancing and tumbling and put on an exhibition in the spring. The senior stand was again opened for the football season with Mrs. Bryan and Mr. Roger Davis as advisers. The band was Hspiifed up with bright new uniforms purchased by the Band Mothers Association. Our famous poster boy, Walter Bird, cap- tured state honors with his poppy poster. Parents came back to the scene of their crimes to see how their children were be- having at a night school program held during National Education Week in November. Gordon Stout received the Bausch and Lomb award for being the outstanding science student of the class. Ruth Amble rc- ceived honorable mention. Each month the Kiwanis Club of Berwick invited an outstanding Senior boy to attend meetings as a recognition of his citizenship. scholastic, and leadership ability. ln celebration of the finished half year, a mid-year formal was held with the Col- legians, comedians, and crooners entertaining a capacity crowd. For the first time in fourteen years final exams were given. This was the sad moment of finishing the year. The Dramatic Club was really on the job this year. Among the programs were: A christmas program by the Seniors, a patrio- tic play, The Home Front',, and a variety show that was presented in March. The year ended with the seniors leaving their Alma Mater with heavy hearts won- dering how they would manage to live with- out her.
