BERTRAM HIGH SCHOOL ALMA MATER Hail to thee our Alma Mater Hail to Bertram High, Loyal hearts in us are beating Loyal till we die. See the colors proudly flowing Dear Maroon and White, While we’re marching on victorious While the Panther’s fight. Praise the chorus speed it onward Praise her to the sky, Hail to thee our Alma Mater HAIL TO BERTRAM HIGH. - words written in 1947 by Madge McCormick Smith, Class of 193( teacher of English, Bertram High School, 1945-1947, teacher. 6th Grade, Bertram Elementary School, 1963-present I BERTRAM HIGH SCHOOL . . A short time after the new town of Bertram was founded on June 24, 1882, a school house and Masonic Lodge Hall was built on a lot at the corner of East Street and South Gabriel Road. This was a two- story wooden building, and was added on to as the town and school grew. This building was used as a school building until 1909. The corner stone for a new two-story red brick school house in Bertram was laid on July 20, 1909. The ceremony was conducted by the Masonic Fraternity of Bertram. The architect for the build- ing was George A. Endress. M. L. Langford of Bertram was the con- tractor and builder. The corner-stone was donated by James Elliott. The following men were members of the school board in 1909: A. J. Ater, President; O. O. Beal;J. W. Buckner; J. W. Glaspy; G. W. Pearce; V. M. Cox; and L. D. Ater, Secretary. The following article was published in The Bertram Banner on July 8, 1909: The day set for laying the ceremonies is the 20th. The ceremonies will be conducted by the Masonic Fraternity of this place, and also an invitation is extended neighboring lodges to attend and participate. The hour of begin- ning will be 3:30 P.M. There will be no forenoon exercises. And, too, the idea of a picnic has been dis- missed. But it is expected to have a very interesting program for the afternoon. There will be several public orations by prominent Masonic speakers. Among other men of prominence expected are Judge Mar- tin; the Honorable Dayton Moses, and the Honorable Ike D. White. Everybody is invited to attend the exercises that mark the beginning to an enterprise of the Bertram citizenship that will commemorate their loyalty to progress long after the participants have returned to mother earth. - Reprinted from articles in the Jubilee Edition of The Bertram Enterprise, Thursday, June 20, 1957, with permission of Mrs. N. Oliver Cox. 2 Script on photograph reads Building of Bertram College, July, 1909: M. L. Langford, Contractor Builder. A REMEMBRANCE 3 DEDICATION We, the 1970 Bertram Panther Annual Staff, with pride and respect dedicate this annual to Mr. Jesse A. Smelley. Mr. Smelley has done a fine job of coaching as well as being a teacher and hard-working principal. He has done a great deal for the students, school and town, as also, he has been a friend to all. 4 SUPERINTENDENT We contribute to better education not by changing just to be changing, but to improve; not by competing, but by cooperating; not by being complacent with what we are, but by being contemporary; not by compromising our convictions, but by making them relevant to our students, our community and our world. FLOYD H. TIGGEMAN PRINCIPAL As we come to the closing of another school year, I want to thank all of you students and teachers for the excellent job you have done in making this Bertram’s finest year. As we close the final chapter on Bertram High School, may we always be reminded of the many activities which helped make this a year that each of us can look back on with pride in our hearts and say ‘I am glad to have been a part of such a wonderful happening.’ When one era stops, we are reminded of the necessity of going on to the next. I hope that each of you will make the future just as enjoyable and worthwhile as you did this past school year. My hopes and prayers go with you. Thanks for giving me two of the nicest years I have ever spent. God bless each of you throughout your life. J. A. SMELLEY BOARD OF TRUSTEES PRESIDENT Mr. O. T.
