COOPER KNOX, Class Poet SENICR CLASS HISTORY 1n September of 1939, with war clouds gathering in Europe, seventy brave six-year- olds began their education here at Berryhill. We soon became accustomed to this new way of life which was presented to us by our patient first grade teachers, Miss Barnette and Miss Dulin. As we went on through grammar school, we became better acquainted with school life. Each year a few of our classmates drifted away from us, while others came to take their place. As we were beginning our third year in school, our nation was aroused to war. We traveled through a world war, the like of which the world had never seen, and as we were completing our sixth year, peace was declared for all the world. We reached the eighth grade in 1946 and were joined there by the graduates of Steele Creek. Our class entered High School with great enthusiasm. Cut Freshman oflicers were: Dick Stone, President, Mary Ellen Smith, Vice-Presidentg George Marshall, Secretary: Carolyn Davis, Treasurer. We entered our Sophomore year with the guidance of Miss Linda Lewis and Mr. Norwood. Our oflicers for that year were: jerry Henry, Presidentg Donald Hamilton. Vice-President, Mary Ellen Smith, Secretary, Dick Stone, Treasurer. As the year came to a close, we learned that we were going to lose our beloved principal, Mr. Dan S. Davis. When the time came for us to begin our junior year, we were very happy to have Mr. W. A. Hough join us as our new principal. VVith his coming, our school under- went many changes which greatly improved it. This was a big year for us-the pubf lishing of the school paper, The Berrie Stains, the presentation of the junior Play, The Campbells Are Coming, and the big event of the year, the Junior-Senior Banquet, which was a big success. The junior-Senior was held in the ballroom of the Selwyn Hotel. The ofhcers for our unior vear were: Dick Stone, Presidentg Mar'orie . . 1 Brown, Vice-President' Marv Ellen Smith, Secretary, Tommv McDaniel, Treasurer. , 4 4 1 Our unior Class sent three re nresentatives, Tommv McDaniel, Charles Hickman, l . and Dick Stone, to Boys' State, and to Cirls' State went Marjorie Brown and Betty Springs. As we returned to school in the fall of 1950, our country was again engaged in rr world crisis-the Korean War. We eagerly began the hardest but most delightful task of our Senior year-the publication of the LINK AND CHAIN under the guidance of our able advisers, Mrs. Brown and Mrs. Baker. Our Senior Class contributed to the Student Council a successful president, Dick Stone. Our Senior ollicers were: Tommy McDaniel, President, jerry Henry, Vice-President, Marjorie Brown, Secretaryg Charles Hickman, Treasurer. As Seniors we presented many programs-the Senior Play and Class Night being the most important. The banquet given us by the juniors was fully appreciated and enjoyed by every Senior. ln the heart of every Senior was a prayer for peace throughout the world as our Senior year drew to a close. Page Fifteen CLASS PROPHECY On june 6, 1961, as my rocket ship glided to a halt after mv return trip from a vacation on Starlite Beach, Moon, I gazed into the horizon to see several flying saucers approaching. Much to my amazement, as the saucers drew near, I recognized the Hiers to be Betty Springs and Margaret Rhyne, two of my dear ole school- mates back at Berryhill High School. I 1 just when I was sliding out of my rocket ship they recognized me and came rushing over. After exchanging greetings we decided to have dinner so we could talk over our days back at Berryhill. I rushed to the nearest phone to inform my husband, Carl Sutton, who is now President of General Motors, Inc., of our special guests. Since Betty was scheduled to sing at the Stork Club at 9:00, Carl quickly called the hostess, Nancy Morris, and reserved the table nearest the orchestra. 1 As we entered, the sweet music of Berryhill's Alma Mater filled our ears. After we were seated, the music ended, the leader turned to us, and we were surprised to see that it was none other than Don Hamilton, another chap from home. He and Nancy joined us at our table, and together, the six of us, with what we knew, linked together little by little the fate of the Seniors of 51. Up until her marriage to jimmy Bigham, Margaret was a Powers Model. Marjorie Brown is running on the Democratic-Ladies ticket in the next election for President of the United States and has as her loyal campaign manager lV1elvin McIntosh. It was recently published in the New York Times, edited by Charles Hickman, that my sister-in-law, Mrs. Mary Ellen Smith, has won the Mother of the Year award for 1961. james Parker gets involved in many lawsuits since he is such a promising lawyer. Reece Lane, owner of the largest dairy farm in the East, is assisted by his capable wife, the former Carolyn Bigham, and their three sons. Robert McCathern's latest novel, Life in Davy jones Locker, has just been published by Hugh Thomas McDaniel's Publishing Company, Inc. With the aid of their mighty coach, Bob McDonald, Duke University's football team was awarded the Southern Conference championship. Carolyn Bryant has been touring South America on a missionary trip. Barbara Biles has been arrested for attempted bigamy. Dorcas Culp has been pro- moted to manager of all the S. H. Kress stores. The remodeling of Charles McCee's artificial limb store has just been completed by the Henry Construction Company, owned and operated bv jerry. A beautiful job of interior decorating was done bv .loan Smith and Betty McCoy. jackie Eaton is on her third trip to Reno. Bill Richard- son has taken over as comedian in Milton Berle's place. Marie Rodden has the largest jewelry store in the South, with Donald McCorkle as manager and Evelyn Taylor as his efficient private secretary. The Douglas and Sing Funeral Home has been changed to just plain Sing, with Bill as owner and Harold Edwards as supervisor and adviser of the joint. The President of the United Nations, Dick Stone, has recently appointed Doris Dunn our foreign minister to France. Due to a large inheritance from her uncle, Alice Neal Brown has finally convinced Paul Starnes that he should marry her. Betty Cathey has just broken the world's record by making a complete trip around the world in two hours and five minutes. Leo Lacy spends most of his waking hours fishing, trying to live up to his name as the World's Cham- pion Fisherman. Cooper Knox took a refresher course at Harvard Law School to prepare for the position of judge in the Chicago Criminal Court, which has been offered her. Ilga Lukevics is now the United States' ambassador to Latvia. Lib Mattox has been chosen as one of the world's ten best dressed women. The courageous photography of th Z Bomb was made by Pat Worlexf as General Don Bullock's come pany conducted the operation. Many lives were saved bv the quick thinking stewardess, Laura Williams, on the rocket that made a crash landing near Baltimore, Maryland. and the johns Hopkins Hospital was filled to capacity. The chief nurse. Crace Wil liams, and her assistants, Ola Smith and Helen Peele, were kept quite busy. Nancy Hudson is now designing the Hudson automobiles, and this year's model is really a beauty. Ilearing all the news from our old classmates brought back memories that we still hold dear to our hearts of days we spent together at Berryhill.
