To our parents who have guided us through the years, encouraged us day bv day, and inspired us to do our hcst, we express our heartfelt thanks. To each of our many teachers and to our numerous friends and community leaders, who have led and challenged us through the years, we extend our gratitude. VVith the desire in our hearts to acknowledge our debt to these, and with the fond recollection of pleasant davs spent together, we present to vou the 1948 LINK AND CHAIN with the hope that its pages will be links in our happy chain of memories. xi J, DEDICHTIOH MR. DAN S. DAVIS i For his interest in us individually, for his inspiring belief in us, for his sympathetic understanding of our problems and his willingness to help us, and for his loyal service to our school, this, the 1948 LINK AND QTHAIN, is dedicated with sincere appreciation and love to one who has been principal, teacher, and friend. Page Three 9. 3111 illiemnriam GEoRoE FRANKLIN BROVVN, As individuals and as a class we feel deeply the loss of one of our hest lcnovvn and hest loved classmates. George was outstanding in many extra-curricular activities and filled well many school positions. Through his association with others he made devoted friends hy his winning smile, sweet disposition, and genuine Christian character. Page Four r Flu illirmnriam Mn. ELBEIU' NIARSHALL NEEL VVC feel lieenlv the loss of this inemher of the Berryhill school hoard, who served so faithfully ever since its organization. Al- though he had no children of his own, he was intensely interested in the welfare, religion, and education of all youth. Ile found his greatest joy in giving help and service to others, no matter what the race or creed. V Because of his wise judgment and willingness to serve, his influence was felt in this school as well as throughout the county. Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on Thee. -Isaiah 26:3 Page I Ma. I. W. WILSON MR. DAN S. HELEN HOYLE, Class Poet Page Thirteen HISTORY On a bright sunny morning of September in the year 1936, a group of young, scared boys and girls took their seats in Mrs. Sharpe's Hrst grade at Berryhill. Of the forty-five first graders that took their seats only nine have completed the twelve year struggle at Berryhill. Ar first we found the g1'ades easy, because reading and writing were not hardg but as we advanced toward our destination-high school, our work became more com- plicated. With the understanding and patience of our teachers and parents, however, we entered the eighth grade, completing the last stepping stone of our grammar education. It was this year that our friends from Steele Creek joined us. In the late summer of 1944 we started on our journey through high school. With the help of Miss Lee, Miss Davis, and Mr. Davis, our new principal, we were assured that this year would be a successful one. Our officers for the Freshman year were: Leighton Todd, president, Carl Vvilcox, vice-president, Bob Lewis, secretary, George Brown, treasurer. The next year of our journey we entered school as Sophomores. This was to be a very big year for us, because we were going to have our first big high school banquet. The banquet was a huge success. We also gave our first 3-act high school play, Faith, llope, and Flarityf' which wound up the year for us. That year was unusual because, for the hrst time in its history, Berryhill did not turn out any Seniors due to the addition of the twelfth grade. The officers elected for our class were: Carl Wilcox, president, Leighton Todd, vice-president, Edith Blackwelder, secretary, Emily Nan Crier, treasurer. Entering our junior year, we looked forward to our real junior-Senior banquet. That year we had all the planning and work to do for the banquet, and we wanted to make sure our Seniors were royally entertained. The banquet was held at Hotel Charlotte and was a huge success. just before Christmas our class was suddenly saddened by the death of one of our classmates, Ceorge Brown. The junior officers were: Tommy Autry, president, Edith Blackwelder, vice-presidentg Dorothy Reid, secretary, George Brown, treasurer. This, our last and Senior year, has proved to be one that we shall never forget. All of the members of the Senior class have gone whole heartedly into making this yearls annual the largest and best one presented by any Senior class at Berryhill. We have taken a very active part in the sports, programs, and other activities of the school. We really appreciated the junior-Senior banquet, because the juniors did everything they could to make it a wonderful banquet. The high school paper, The Roundup, sponsored and put out by the juniors, has been one of the best papers ever presented to the Berryhill students, and we have enjoyed it thoroughly. The graduating class of this year, individually, wants to thank the teachers, parents, and others who have made it possible for us to receive such an education and have given us the conhdence which we needed for a wonderful start in life. APRIL 30, 1958 IJEAR IOYCE CCAUBLED, I am writing this little note to congratulate you upon your successful debut at the Metropolitan. I always knew you would make it. Bly night club in New York needs a featured singer for a summers run. I wonder if you would consider contracting with me to sing in my new musical next May, which Clarence Wingate, the multi-millionaire, is backing? Sarah Freeman is going to sing her famous torch song, and Betty Chapman is being featured as our solo pianist. Bruce Abercrombie, the comedian, will use the act that put Bob Hope in retirement. He has certainly come a long wav since Berryhill! Ieanette Short's Agency will furnish all the chorus girls. Ieanette took over the old Power's Agency, you know, with the competent assistance of Mary Byrum and Betty Allred, her secretaries. The costumes will be especially designed by Jessie Porter's Dresse Shoppe. I hear Louise McCuirt is keeping the place going bv her expert management. In order to have the very best I am having Helen Hoyle over from Macy's art department to desion the scenery exclusively for this production. She is quite good. Also Mlles. Doris CFitzpatrickhD and Buford CWeaverD are doing all the hair styles. Since I am selecting only the best, I know you can hardly resist my olfer. You have probably wondered at my present address. Well, I had a complete nervous break- down. Mary Camp, a leading psychiatrist, told me that I had to stop work for a month, so I decided that if I had to be idle, I'd come to Charlotte where I could enioy resting. At one time I was such a wreck that Reverend Neal Baker even paid me a visit! Coming down on Eastern, fthe plane was piloted by Max Monteithl I saw Hazel Preslar, Margaret Peele, and Georgia Ann Holloway on various planes, acting as air stewardesses. Margaret told me that Paul Christensen has taken General Rickenbacker's place as head of the Eastern Air Lines. Imagine that! As I was entering the Presbyterian Hospital, I saw Martha Neel Knox, ambling down the corridor. We stopped for a chat and I found out that Polly Sutton is here, too. She's my nurse now. Polly received a letter from Virginia Rodwell Cmedical missionary in ChinaD yesterday and got so excited she pushed a thermometer half way down my throat. A handsome new doctor here is very concerned, but Ioyce Sheets, his secretary, won't let him inquire. Ioyce came to see me day before yesterday and informed me that S. C. Henry iust defeated Ioe Louis. T. C. Thompson is in New York now. I saw him often after he became the highest paid professional baseball player in history. He is even more famous than Babe Ruth. I still haven't explained my nervous breakdown. Here is how it happened: Last month I telephoned to San Francisco to talk with Bruce about our contract, but I just couldn't hear a thing he said. VVhen I complained to the operator, I immediately recognized Doris Freeman's voice. We had a Hne conversation. It seems that Emily Nan Crier has taken Miss Rogers' place at Berryhill. Daredevil Robert Stone was featured at the Southern States Fair as Stock Car driver and motorcycle racerg and Tommy Autry just completed a bridge across the English Channel. This gave me quite a shock! However, the next afternoon things really began to happen. About 4:30, I heard a terrific buzzing over the roof. I climbed up to the skylight in time to see the famous stunt pilot, Charles Crump, come out of an outside loop right on mv chimney. This really put me in a state! And that very evening one of our rich clientele brought her little Dane along because she couldn't get a dog-sitter. The Dane managed to get out-doors and into our garbage cans, and contracted ptomaine poison. VVe rushed it to Rebecca Davis' Veterinarian Hospital but to no avail. I met Ioyce Riggins working as secretary, but in the confusion I didn't get to speak with her. The unconsolable dowager threatened to sue. Therefore, the next day found me bright and early at the omce of the best lawyer in town. Pat Adams, the best lawyer's secretary in the business, gave me a lot of useful hints, and we finally managed to settle out of court. And as if that wasn't already too much, someone told the F. B. I. that I was running a gambling house over my club. Silly notion! Presently Edith Blackwelder and Frances Stone came rolling up in a big black Buick to investigate. They found everything in perfect order, of course, and I invited them to stay and see the show. We all grew quite melancholy and talked at length about ole Berryhill. In the course of our conversation I learned that Charles Culp has iust been appointed Assistant State Forester, Verline Bradshaw has received special honors as a secretary, Billie Berryhill is working as head mechanic for Ford Motor Co., and in addition to this, jane Berryhill has been elected Mother of the Year,', now having a total of nine children of assorted sizes, etc. When the evening ended, Edith and Frances told me to appeal to the President if anyone gave me any more trouble. Dorothy Reid is his secretary now, you know. VVhen all that had run its course, I was a complete wreck. That's when Marv Camp got hold of me. I would feel much better now if it weren't for that infernal racket. Martha Neel iust told me that it is lack Harrelson and his fleet of Diesels, laying the foundation for a building that will top the Empire State. His secretary, Wanda Maddox, is right out there bossing the iob. I think I'll have a relapse if I think about my terrible business any longer. Please wire if you will sing for me. My salary is especially interesting! Sincerely yours, ANN BROCKENBROUGH Class Proplzetess Page Eighteen .' ffl-az, bffilw '23 ' Y' A, f ft 3 2, A J ..
