The many times we have gone to her for advice and counsel and the gracious way in which she has always been ready to lend a helping hand with any of our activities will forever be a part of our lives as graduates of Berry High School. THIS 1960 SPOTLIGHT Mr. Herbert Potter who in his four short years here has indeed made himself a part of our school and its activities. Surely these years wouldn't have been so rich and wonderful had he not been here to give freely of his time and efforts. His calm and able manner, loyal service, cheerful disposition, and de- votion to duty have been an example and inspiration for all of us. As we march down the aisle We think of yester-years, When all was fun and smiles, And football games and cheers. Our teachers, they reside, Whose patience never ceased. Their help they did provide When grades did not increase, The ball games-yes, again, We never will forget The time of our big wins, The time of our besets. Our classmates, most of all, Strong recollections bring. In life's book they enthrall, And ever shall they cling. Now we must stand up straight, And face the future strong. We must not give up to fate, But go through life with song. As we take one last view, And start to turn away, The thoughts will e'er be true, Of dear old high school days! As I moved closer to get a better look, an image caught my eye. The year 1970 was slowly coming into view. Then I began to see my 1960 classmates and what they would all be doing in the future. Of course, the first person to catch my attention was joe Tyner. He did such a great job as president of our senior class, until he was unanimously selected to become the first president of the moon. Hilda Sawyer was sitting in the moonlight with Jerry Doughty, listening to the drtuns of the Congo since she is a missionary to Africa and he is a famous explorer. I saw june Cannon as a home economics instructor at Montevallo. She has a busy schedule this year with all of her school duties and looking for a man at the same time. Next I began to see beautiful girls diving from a high diving board. Now who is that strong, handsome life- guard? Why, it's our own jackie Key. I'm not surprised, because jackie was always chasing pretty girls during our high school days at Berry. I saw Doyle Baker, who is now a concert pianist in Europe. He hasn't changed much since 1960, except for his long curly hair and sideburns. Wanda Brown was recently elected Miss Rocket Ship for 1970. She will be given a free ride to Mars by that famous scientist, John L. Shrum, who has just developed the fastest rocket known to man. Patsy Pendley and her family Qwhich includes 10 little Pendleysj have just moved to Hollywood, where Patsy will star in her first movie. She is looking forward to that Academy Award. Serdia Fulmer has taken over Mrs. Brock's place as typing teacher at B.H.S. She only allows male students in her typing classes because she is afraid of becoming an Old Maid. I saw Linda McCaleb as a stewardess for Trans-World Airlines. She is very much in love with the pilot, but he prefers Marilyn Monroe Qbelieve it or notj. james Odom is still driving Bus 35 from Bankston to Berry every morning. It's getting kinda, out-of-date now, because most of the schools are using airplanes but james doesn't have the heart to get rid of his famous rattletrap. I could see a huge ship coming into view. There's the captain waving to me. Oh, yes, I can see him clearly now. I6 It's Jerry Odom still as handsome as ever. He is really enjoying his navy career. Don Olive is now serving as a private artist for one of our other 1960 classmates, Doris Esary. Doris can't decide whether she should color her hair baby blue or hot orange for her next portrait, which Don is painting. Since George Traweek was so successful coaching the Powde-r Puff Football Games in high school, he decided to make a career of it. This year his team didn't do so well because all of the girls were too busy swooning over George to play football. I saw Anna Kimbrell looking quite different since 1960. Her long red hair was changed to black. Anna informed me that she had to do something drastic if she ever hoped to get that certain Hubbertville boy. fred hair means temper you knowj There go United States Senators, M. C. Bonner and Leon Pendley on their way to Washington. They have just visited Berry where they did a good deed for Mrs. Shep- herd. Believe it or not, M. C. and Leon paid for all over- due books in the library. Next I could see Dorothy Pendley as mathematician for a large New York City restaurant. Prices are so high this year that even an adding machine canit add up the bills. Dorothy was always a whiz at math. I saw Wallis Hocutt as he had finally passed high school bookkeeping. Qafter only 10 yearsj. His motto is, Flunk now and avoid the rush. Ruthie Sands and Thelma Vice are now next door neighbors in Alaska where their husbands are working as igloo builders. Remember Kenneth Fields, the quiet boy in our class? You'd be surprised at his job now. He is an auctioneer at the Fields Sale Barn located in downtown Berry. I saw Audrey Davis training Huckleberry Hound Dog for his next TV show. She also feeds peanuts to the mon- keys in her spare time. I could see Roy Wayne Espey after he had just become The W01'ld'J Champion Giggler from a field of 500 con- testants. When asked how he felt about this important position, his only reply was, Heel Hee! Hee! Larry Morris was telling jokes to his little red-haired, freckly-faced son. junior certainly thinks Pop is another jack Benny, Red Skelton, and Bob Hope all in one. I saw Charlene Knight as she rushed up to tell me that she and her husband had just bought a new 100 room tourist cabin in Flatwoods, the exotic summer resort. The water began rippling soft and low again and as I stood up everything was gone and darkness was coming fast. My vision had lasted longer than I realized. The time had come to .leave 1970 behind and head for home. i l l Miriam Smith, Clary Prophet P.S. And we also saw into 1970, Miriam. We saw you back in Bankston in the i first grade again-only teaching this time. Miriam had a special class in speech i making where she taught her students Speech-Giggling Easf 021' f cmof fjesfamenf We, the Seniors of 1960, being of reasonably sound mind and questionable memory, do hereby bequeath to Berry High School and to the future Seniors of '61, our Last Will and Testament. Doyle Baker leaves Carolyn Sparks, but not for long. Doris Esary leaves her beautiful voice to Carolyn Holley. The Cheaters of the Senior Class leave their shifty eyes to the juniors, jackie Key leaves Mrs. Shepherd to G. W. Goodwin and jimmy Madison. Charlene Knight leaves her tiny figure to Ann Smith. Miriam June Smith leaves her ability to make speeches to Lynda Dobbs. Kenneth Fields leaves a burnt welding rod to Jerry Wayne Handley. june Cannon leaves the Bowen name to Bettie since she doesn't think she will use it right now. Witnessed by: Bridgette Bardot bf----1 The Three Little Pigs Old King Cole john Shrum, Lawyer Class of 1960 QThe contents herein do not necessarily express the opinion of the writer.j jiglsfory The history of our school days begins in August of 1948 with fifteen of our present students enrolled in Berry Elementary School First Grade. They were: Don Olive, Jackie Key, june Cannon, George Traweek, M. C. Bonner, Wanda Brown, Dorothy Pendley, Doyle Baker, Hilda Sawyer, Charlene Knight, Anna Kimbrell, Roy Wayne Espey, Wallis Hocutt, Patsy Simmons Pendley, Jerry Doughty. It was only a short time, it seemed, until our grammar school days were over and we entered into high school in 1954. Then at last we became dignified Seniors. Most of the club offices are held by seniors. We have had one Homecoming QueenhHilda Sawyer. We have some outstanding football and basketball players in our class. Joe Tyner and George Traweek were co-captains of the football team this year and Joe was voted most valuable player. The cheerleaders from our class are Linda McCaleb and june Cannon and Linda was chosen head cheerleader for the year. We have a record number of Beta Club members in our class. These B plus stu- dents are Wallis Hocutt, George Traweek, joe Tyner, Don Olive, john Shrum, Miriam Smith, June Cannon, Patsy Pendley, Doris Esary, Dorothy Pendley, Serdia Fulmer, Linda McCaleb. At the time of this writing, we have not yet produced the Senior Play but books have been ordered for a 3 act comedy entitled 'lOff the Tracki' and it will be staged in March. With kind help and strong guidance, our beloved class sponsor, Mrs. Dixie Brock, has made the last milestone in our school years the most wonderful experience of our lives. And without the help, advice, and patience with our many problems which our prin- cipal, Mr. Fred Webster, has given us, we would have missed much of what it means to be a senior. In behalf of our senior class, I would like to say a sincere thanks to each teacher, parent, friend, and fellow student for their cooperation and help in making our school life a most memorable one. We will never forget you. We will always remember Berry High School. Linda McCaleb, Hirlorimz. Of!
