PEP RALLIES Enthusiasm runs high at a Berry pep rally. The cheerleaders do an excellent job of raising the spirits of the crowd as the band plays music to thrill even the calmest of students. Student council members often perform skits which are enjoyed by all.

A NEW FACE Berry was pleased in welcoming a friendly face to the campus this year. Mrs. Susan Bell was installed as the new librarian following the mid-term retirement of Mrs. Carpenter. Her job was made easier by the many students and faculty members. Mrs. Bell hails from Shades Valley High School, where she was a librarian for three years. As students became familiar with the new librarian, they found a friend to assist them in finding research material and books for pleasure. Berry was fortunate to have acquired such a pleasant personality, whom we hope will remain for a long time. M T 1 ' OLD FRIENDS The faces of two outstanding faculty members were missed this year at Berry. Mrs. Helms, who taught government for many years, retired after the end of the 1 978-79 school year. Mrs. Helms had been a favorite of the seniors every year that she taught. Instead of a replacement teacher, the administration divided Mrs. Helms ' classes among other social studies teachers. Mrs. Carpenter held the position of Berry ' s head librarian for several years before announcing her retirement this year. Before her departure, a faculty tea was held in her honor by the Library Club. Mrs. Carpenter had assisted many students in finding books for pleasure and research, as well as overseeing her assistants in keeping the books and catalogue files in good order. 18

NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY TAPPING Tensions were high as expectant students waited to see what lucl y few would be initiated into the National Honor Society during the fall and spring tappings. Honor Society members donned in black robes and holding lighted candles entered the gymnasium and progressed to the stage. Chaplain Jocelyn McClelland gave a short devotional and prayer and President Jay McCollum presided. Four members gave speeches on service, character, scholarship, and leadership. These were the traits looked for in a prospective Honor Society member. Members then circled the gym in pairs to find their candidates and brought them onto the stage. Mr. Slagle swore them in, and a reception was held in the library for the new members and their parents. Being tapped was the culmination of a great de al of hard work for these students, and each one deserved the honor. Top right: Valerie Bendall lights the candle of character.
