Mrs. Susan Bell was installed as the new librarian following the mid-term retirement of Mrs. Carpenter. Her job was made easier by the many students and faculty members. Mrs. Bell hails from Shades Valley High School, where she was a librarian for three years. As students became familiar with the new librarian, they found a friend to assist them in finding research material and books for pleasure. Berry was fortunate to have acquired such a pleasant personality, whom we hope will remain for a long time. M T 1 ' OLD FRIENDS The faces of two outstanding faculty members were missed this year at Berry. Mrs. Helms, who taught government for many years, retired after the end of the 1 978-79 school year. Mrs. Helms had been a favorite of the seniors every year that she taught. Instead of a replacement teacher, the administration divided Mrs. Helms ' classes among other social studies teachers. Mrs. Carpenter held the position of Berry ' s head librarian for several years before announcing her retirement this year. Before her departure, a faculty tea was held in her honor by the Library Club. Mrs. Carpenter had assisted many students in finding books for pleasure and research, as well as overseeing her assistants in keeping the books and catalogue files in good order. 18 PEP RALLIES Enthusiasm runs high at a Berry pep rally. The cheerleaders do an excellent job of raising the spirits of the crowd as the band plays music to thrill even the calmest of students. Student council members often perform skits which are enjoyed by all. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY TAPPING Tensions were high as expectant students waited to see what lucl y few would be initiated into the National Honor Society during the fall and spring tappings. Honor Society members donned in black robes and holding lighted candles entered the gymnasium and progressed to the stage. Chaplain Jocelyn McClelland gave a short devotional and prayer and President Jay McCollum presided. Four members gave speeches on service, character, scholarship, and leadership. These were the traits looked for in a prospective Honor Society member. Members then circled the gym in pairs to find their candidates and brought them onto the stage. Mr. Slagle swore them in, and a reception was held in the library for the new members and their parents. Being tapped was the culmination of a great de al of hard work for these students, and each one deserved the honor. Top right: Valerie Bendall lights the candle of character. Ik 21 FINLEY STADIUM During the October 5th pep rally, the Student Council honored Coach Robert Finley for his excellent coaching by naming the Berry stadium, Finley Stadium. The student body showed their pleasure in the name-change by giving rousing cheers and applause for Coach Finley during the presentation of a new sign that was mounted at the stadium entrance. Coach Finley ' s years of hard work and dedication on behalf of Berry ' s athletes were deeply appreciated. Top: Mr. Brymer reads letter of appreciation. Ii PLAY-OFF GAME After much hard work and a season of 8-2, the Mighty Buccaneers advanced to the first round of the state playoffs. Berry won this right after a convincing Homecoming victory over Minor, 1 4- 0. Although the team showed real talent and aggression, they were not able to overcome the stronghold of powerhouse Jeff Davis, who triumphed over the Bucs, 21 -7. Notwithstanding this bitter play-off disappointment, the team deserved much recognition for their outstanding season. JERSEY RETIRED The Varsity Football team suffered many losses through injuries during the 1 979 season. One of the hardest felt was the loss of senior linebacker Carson Henley, who injured his knee duhng practice. Carson had been a great influence on the team as well as a spiritual leader. For those and other contributions made by him. Coach Finley decided to retire Carson ' s jersey, number thirteen. This was the second time a jersey has been retired at Berry. When the announcement was made at the October 1 2th pep rally, students honored Carson with a standing ovation. 24 TYPE-A-THON The Future Business Leaders of America sponsored a Type-A-Thon on Friday, February 1 5. All proceeds went toward equipping an indoor playground in the new tower of the Children ' s Hospital. The Type-A-Thon was a state F.B.L.A. project instigated last year at Berry. Contestants were sponsored by students and faculty for a minimum of ten cents per word on a three-minute timed writing. Mrs. Holland and Mrs. McWhiter were sponsors of the project. ilop: All students participate in the Type-A-Thon. Middle: Signs } advertising the big event were all over the school. Everything from doors to automobiles was decorated to show that famous orange, and white Buc spirit. An exciting 1 4-0 Buccaneer victory over the Minor Tigers sent Berry to the State Playoffs and was the culmination of a week of excitement. Jon Phillips, Jay McCollum, Benny Schrubbe, and Chris Hill had the pleasure of escorting the contestants to the music played by the Jazz Ensemble. Jon Phillips welcomed the audience, and the girls began their walks down the runway. With the announcement of the top thirty, excitement grew among the contestants and the audience. After a second look, the judges chose the top ten. They were Kelley Johnson, Judy McGaughy, Jill Powell, Diane McGaughy, Valerie Bendall, Anita Digiorgio, Celeste Bostick, Susan Barnes, Wendy Clark, and Michele Hefferly. As these lovely ten young ladies waited for the results of the evening, Lisa Boyd, last year ' s Miss Senior Class, made her final walk. The culmination of the whole evening came as Mr. Slage announced the winners: Valerie Bendall — second alternate, Kelley Johnson — first alternate, and Diane and Judy McGaughy — Misses Senior Class. This was the first time that there had ever been a tie for the title. It was a night that all will remember. Top: He ' s here! Middle: Berry ' s talented Jazz Ensemble performs. The annual event took place in November with student and faculty representatives of col- leges and universities from all over the country. These visitors were the guests of a tea in the home economics cottage and then attended a brief indoctrination assembly. Afterwards, students talked to the different representatives in class- rooms. A luncheon was held in the library for the guests before their departure. This experi- ence gave students a better insight into the type of college they would like to attend. One of these elective courses was floriculture, the study of plants and flowers. The class brought to Berry a new face, Mr. Hubbard, who instructed students in the producing, marketing, using, and selling of florist crops. He also taught design, flower shop management, and greenhouse management. One project the class engaged in was planning wedding and reception arrangements. Data entry, taught by Mr. Hinson, familiarized students with the computer and its applications. Eleven micro computers allowed students to experience first-hand the entering of data on the computer. Emphasis was placed on preparing a student for a career as a data entry clerk as well as making other job opportunities available to him. Mr. Griffin taught a course in drafting. Students learned mechanical drafting, the drawing of machine parts, and architectural drafting, the drawing and designing of house plans. This class laid a good foundation for students who plan to be engineers or draftsmen. Mrs. Vines was instrumental in helping students widen their vocabulary by instructing them in medical terminology. They also received instruction in anatomy and physiology while preparing for a career in the field of health occupations. Top: Homework is a cinch with this gadget. The February event, which was organized to raise money for the baseball team, was the scene of both comedy and tension. Players battled to prevent humiliation from members and fans of the opposing teams. Fast-hands Finley, Jumping Jane fy lahon, and Maddog Barnes led the faculty to a hair-splitting victory of 43-42. Their worthy adversaries, coached by Chris Hill, included Sink it Stu Thrasher, Dribbling Donna Daniel, and Shane — who do I throw it to? — Graham. Referees Harbin and Wright tried to be impartial in their decisions, but they knew they would be in trouble whichever way they sided. Nancy Moore and Mrs. White had quite a string of jump balls. Coach Stephens, not finding a man open, threw the ball to the referee. The Buccanettes and unicyclers, Ryan Whitly and Dale Steed, provided half-time entertainment. Mike Ramblin ' Romano did an admirable job as the announcer and commentator of the game. Top: A bicycle built for two? Bottom left: Bouncy, bouncy ball. Besides attending classes, students enjoy square dancing, assemblies, and sports events. A special thrill is felt by juniors ordering class rings. Decisions about the future are made by discussing goals with counselors. Participating in student life can be a very rewarding experience for the people attending Berry. 9 1 Top: Beauty and the Beast, Middle left: Counselors help students in many areas. One of the highlights of their winning season was Berry ' s hosting of the County Tournament. Another major accomplishment was defeating Shades Valley, ranked number six in the state at the time. Other important victories for Berry were over West End, Homewood, and Vestavia. Leading the Bucs in scoring were Jay Thursby and Murry Bartow. Thursby ended also as leading rebounder. Tom Morgan, Robby Carter, Lynn Farquhar, Clay Bishop, Gordon McBryde and Hal Langston were also outstanding contributors. Top: Row 1 : D. Rawson, P. LeGrone, L. Farquhar, M. Bartow, C. Bishop, B. They used great variety of material at pep rallies and games. A lot of their hard work is never recognized and they spend endless hours after school and in the summer to prepare for the coming season. Some of the achievements the girls have received this year include being selected in the top 6 squads out of 1 38 squads at summer clinic. The squad also finished in the top 7 squads in pom-pom finals. Top: K.Harris, M. Reimann, S. Jenkins, S. Barnes, B. Buttenworth — co-head, S. Shepherd — co-head, S. Robinette, S. Taylor, C. He said that this young team did a great job, and they should be even better in future years. Leading scorers, Anita Thomas and Kristy Stonecypher, and top rebounders, Regina Smith and Sherry McBryde, led the team against their opponents. The team had a big loss when Shelly Rix, being one of their top scorers, moved. They finished the season with a 7-7 record. Top left: Coach Stevens gives the girls the game plan. The annual staff met every day seventh period and often after school to work on the different sections. The only requirement made of students to be on the staff was to sell $200.00 worth of ads to help cover the expense of publication. Jocelyn McClelland, the editor, was responsible for several improvements in the annual format. One of these was the addition of the Honors Section which pays tribute to students who have excelled in different aspects of student life. Top left: Aren ' t we a beautiful pair! The paper was a means by which students interested in the tield of journalism could express their talent and acquire first-hand experience in their craft. The publication was distributed on campus on a monthly basis to students interested in school affairs. The paper not only covered school events, but also community happenings, media events, and different forms of entertainment. They prepared for the future by visiting a major university on Engineering Day. This trip was chaperoned by their sponsors, Mrs. Christian and Mrs. Mahon. They sponsored Pictures with Santa (played brilliantly by Hardy Green) to increase club funds. This activity also gave participating students a wonderful memento of Christmas at Berry. Ij j6- •■ iv. As in past years, the president of the Interclub Council was the second vice-president of the Student Council, namely, Chris Hill. Meetings were held on the second and fourth Mondays of every month. The Interclub Council kept a record of each club ' s activities and based on these records chose which clubs would receive honors on Awards Day. Members collected money, food stuffs, and other necessities to give to a needy family at Christmas and also left a gift to the school in their name. The work of this organization, sponsored by Mrs. O ' Neal and Mrs. Smith, helped clubs run smoothly throughout the year. ! Top: Officers: B. Schrubbe, B. Dickens, J. Harwell, C. Hill. The week-long session took place in early June. Jay, along with the other young men who attended, tollowed a very strict schedule ranging from doing calisthenics to attending meetings. As the Federalist Party Chairman for his city and as a senator. Jay had little time for relaxation. His experience at Boys ' State helped him to appreciate the value of a democratic form of government and the work of the people who run our state and national government. As president of the Honor Society, Drum Major of the Marching band, and Vice- President of the Senior Class, Jay McCollum was a fine representative of Berry ' s student leaders. GIRLS ' STATE Berry ' s representative to Girls ' State 1 979 was Shane Graham. Chosen because of her outstanding leadership qualities and school participation as Junior Class President, a member of the National Honor Society, and an Anchor club member, Shane learned many aspects of city, county, and State government at the annual seminar. For nine days in early June, Shane lived in a dorm at Huntingdon College along with girls from all over Alabama. She was elected city chairman of the mythical Federalist Party, and helped to campaign against the Nationalist Party for government offices. The girls toured the State Capitol, the Little White House, and the Governor ' s Mansion, where they met Mrs. Fob James. Shane ' s experience was both educational and enjoyable. 128 NATIONAL JUNIOR HONOR SOCIETY The purpose of the National Junior Honor Society was to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to develop citizenship, to serve, and to promote leadership. The sponsors were Mrs. Cooper and Mrs. Patton. The requirements of the National Junior Honor Society were that one must have had no more than three S averages since the seventh grade. The organization took part in many school activities such as helping needy families. This club held the leaders of tomorrow. Top, Officers: Mrs. Cooper, L. Ford, T. Armstrong, B. Richardson, C. The club was sponsored by Mrs. Truss, Mrs. Lysinger, and Dr. Hale. Activities included selling homecoming corsages, ushering at graduation, and donating money to a needy family at Christmas. While traveling as a group to Gatlinburg, Tennessee, many members of the Honor Society became closer friends. New members were chosen twice during the year in fall and spring tappings. Once in the National Honor Society, a student was required to keep his grades up in order to maintain membership. All of these scholastically elite students lived up to the expectations of the organization and each was a credit to the student body at Berry High School. Top: Officers: J. Harwell, D. Cato, J.
