Wishing for a desired result will not bring it any closer to the final climax. To establish this firmly in one ' s mind is the first step toward achievement. It may be something as simple as peaceful serenity in a quiet countryside. Reach toward your desires and yearnings • let nothing hold you back. Climb toward your horizons and benefit with each day ' s experiences. Undergo each test with the outlook of discovering new potentials — uniquely your own. Do the best you can at whatever you attempt. Use your talents as a guide . . . For each person is his own individual . . . No man, however great or willing, can ever rise above and beyond that for which he sets his goals. II 1. II ;; Events Diane Lewis — Section Editor Beverly Bethany 19 20 Honor Society Students, filing into the gym, wonder which students will be chosen dufing the 1 975 fall tapping. The members in long robes begin the ceremony with a candlelight parade through the gym. Speeches are given on leadership, scholarship, choracter, and service. Pomp and Circumstance is played and excitement mounts as the deserving students are tapped. Comments are heard everywhere such as Where is Kay? How do we tap her with her hat on? Don ' t singe your hair! There are excited parents and equally thrilled new members. Pledges are said and there is a reception afterwards for the members and their parents. Sixteen new mem- bers are rewarded for their years of hard work. 21 22 Homecoming Week Homecoming Week is filled with activities planned by the Student Council. Hat and Glasses Day fills Berry with many strange looking heads. The day that students wear all clothes reversed is Back- wards Day. Because of the unique fit of the pants, sitting down is one of the major problems of the day. The most popular event is the changing of roles between boys and girls. The wardrobes range from suits and ties, to short skirts, wigs, and high heels. Hearing concerned masculine voices say My pantyhose ripped! and Coach Finley will kill me! makes this a very unusual day. Friday is Orange and White Day; a contest is held for the best dressed in orange. GO BIG ORANGE! BEAT ERWIN! and THAT ' S OUR TEAM fill the stadium as spirits soar for the Homecoming Game. Seniors win the spirit stick, and the annual pie throw leaves Bruce Rogers and Richard Hill with faces full of meringue. A Thursday night bon- fire and a spirited pep rally lead toward a victorious Homecoming night. 23 24 Homecomin Nieht School spirit fills the air Homecoming night as students, parents, and alumni crowd into Berry ' s stadium. The festivities begin early with the Homecoming parade of floats. Although there is a car- float collision the parade is a great success and all the floats reflect hard work and imagination. The kick-off starts the game, and the excitement and enthusiasm of the spectators is transmitted to the players on the field. The first half of the game ends with Berry trailing Erwin, but loyal fans are optimistic for the remaining quarters. At last the long-awaited halftime announcement is made, and Diane Lewis is crowned Queen midst a flurry of hugs, tears, and popping flashbulbs. After the playing of the Alma Mater, determined Buccaneers make a dramatic comeback to defeat the Erwin Eagles. All Berry fans are jubilant, and for the class of ' 76, this Homecoming victory means an especially happy memory. 25 Senior Beauty Walk A new situation faces the sen- ior girls this year: a top thirty, and a two day Beauty Walk. Only the participants and judges are present for the cas- ual wear presentation of the twelfth annual Beauty Walk. The big night, Friday, is formal wear, and the long awaited announcements of the final- ists. No heat in the dressing rooms adds to the confusion of the 1 25 nervous girls trying to get ready for the call to line up. On both nights, the dress- ing rooms are filled with excitement, rollers, hairspray, and Mrs. Kelly saying You ' re too pale, put on more blush! After a final walk down the runway by the top ten, the judges choose Lisa Newton as Miss Senior Class 1 976. 26 27 28 29 Powder Puff Permission slips ore handed out and practices begin for the annual Powder Puff clash between the senior and junior girls. Tackle foot- ball is voted on unanimously and spirited girls and coaches train hard for the big game. Bruised bodies limp around school during the next two weeks, and despite many injuries in practice, excite- ment grows as game time gets nearer. Friday finally arrives, and before the game, as the stadium fills, boy cheerleaders entertain the crowd while money is collected for the air conditioning fund, and senior roster sheets are handed out. The whistle blows and ten- sion builds as the game starts. A senior touchdown on the second play surprises the crowd, and the cheering gets louder as the gome progresses. A short first half ends with seniors leading 7-0. During the second half juniors get past a tough senior defense and tie the score 7-7. Fourth quarter is mass confusion with coaches, referees, and players fighting for the boll. Juniors are given the ball for a fourth or fifth down. As seniors ore close to a second touch- down, time runs out and the score remains 7-7. 30 „ : 3 Boys ' Beauty Walk Sponsored by the Treasure Chesf, the Boys ' Beauty Walk is an annual event at Berry. A few of our school ' s senior and junior boys go all out to dress as girls and compete in beauty, as well as talent, for the title of Miss Boys ' Beauty Walk. The audience stares in astonishment, trying to recognize a familiar face, while contestants parade down the runway in dresses, make-up and wigs. Unusual talent is displayed as dancers, singers, spoon players, ventrilo- quists, and rollerskaters perform for the judges and audience. The title Miss Congeniality, which is voted on by all of the contestants, is awarded to Boula Constantine. After a difficult decision is made by the judges, Hilda Howard is crowned Miss Boys ' Beauty Walk 1975. 32 33 34 Fifties ' Day rMr On 50 ' s Day Berry converts to ponytails, bobby socks, red lipstick, greased-back hair, and clothes of the era. An assembly sets off the day with an imitation of an old American Bandstand show. Included in this, is a dance contest, rate-a-record, personal appear- ances by Elvis Presley ' and the ' Fonze ' and a variety of songs and acts from the 50 ' s. Cameras are everywhere, and the halls become a great place for taking pictures as groups of students pose while others push their way through to get to class. Fifties ' Day at Berry is completed with a sockhop that night. Everyone learns to do the jit- terbug, the bunny hop, and other dances as Cadillac plays 50 ' s music in four different sequences. Fifties ' Day is always a great suc- cess and this one will be remembered for a long time. 35 36 37 College Day Posters stating Don ' t be a fish out of water — choose the right college advertise College Day ' 75 throughout Berry High and turn students ' thoughts toward the future. A spokesman from Monte- volio prepares students for the college sessions with an informative speech. Representatives arrive from over the southeastern states to promote their schools and to answer questions concerning costs, courses, and tours. Meanwhile, counselors fill the school with smiles and give helpful suggestions to wondering, or, wandering students. The seniors are quickly making decisions while the juniors gather more information. As for the sophomores, they just enjoy them- selves. After the last college class, the representatives attend a luncheon in the library. College Day ' 75 proves to be very educa- tional for students and representatives alike. i SE BBt v JBH iM i B B ' K K ' ' t ' wi pw Bj ivMr M t|I ' -y K ' N rii lBJ Mwi % .vjp. i ' J WS m m 1 r 1 mi ■ • 38 I • SiSL Pep Rallies Spirit sticks wave in the air; the Band plays; students chant their class yells as the football team walks out onto the field. The cheerleaders unite the students and promote spirit by per- forming difficult formations. Then, silence falls as the team captains come forward. They speak briefly, but assuredly, of winning tonight ' s gome. Clubs join in pep rally fun with amusing skits. Anchor Club ' s girls mock various football players, then dance across the track singing You ' ve Got to Be a Football Hero. The Home Economics Club presents a variation of Old McDonald ' s Form in honor of the seniors. The honorary cheerleaders debut cheering Hey! Hey! Bob-ba-ree-bah! The pep rallies end with the singing of the Alma Mater, and one last yell is heard before stu- dents return to classes. % «, 39 THK I.L HNIf«i ABIUTV Ol VHrm ItHE M 7I I M4ir J MAZJ .1 M ' 40 Events The routine school days are cheerfully interrupted from time to time with special events. The club assembly organized by student coun- cil interests students in the various organizations of Berry High. Concerts, festive decorations, and merry carols enchoing through the halls mean it ' s the Christmas season and students are in high spirits. Then, a portrayal of Mark Twain creates a feeling of warmth and laughter as humorous tales are retold. UAB dancers demonstrate the graceful art of ballet and Mr. Oyama impresses everyone with the power of karate at later assemblies. The Science Department sponsors the first Science Fair and interested students spend long hours preparing displays. The Vikings lead at half- time 7-6, but this encourages Berry to win. McDaniel, after a battle down the field, carries the ball across to bring the score to a 1 2-7 lead. Not satisfied with taking a field goal, the Bucs ' ambition and David Shepherd go for two. The score now is 14-7. Jim Baxley blocks a punt in the end zone for a safety. The clock runs out for Huffman. The Bucs ' line holds Huffman back. The final score is 16- 13. ■T j-5ro«r [ ' 68 Hueytown Berry travels to the Gopher Stadium for their first clash of the year. Berry scores in the second quarter when Randy Cook makes a good play, which pushes the Bucs ahead. Graham ' s field goal is good, but the Bucs are penalized for holding. Graham ' s second attempt is off. Time runs out for Berry. The final score is 7-6. 69 Homewood The four-year-old rivalry between Berry and Homewood returns once again. Berry shows its enthusiasm as it takes a sweet victory over the Patriots. The Patriots drive all the way to the Buc ' s 3, but Baxley knocks the ball from the quarterback ' s hands. Gary White picks it up and runs for a Berry touchdown. The extra point is good. The Bucs lead 7-0. A few plays later the Patriots score, making it a tie, 7-7. Berry ' s second touchdown is set up by the defense as Byrd recovers a fumble at Homewood ' s 22. Three plays later. Shepherd scores, making it 1 3-7. In the third quarter McDaniel throws a pass to Bart Krout for another 6 points. The 2 point conversion is good. Now the Bucs lead 1 9-7. Bart Krout receives another pass from Mike Nelson for a touchdown. Graham ' s extra point is good. The final score is 26-7. 70 Vesta via On the night of October 3rd victory comes easily for the Bucs. As the annual clash comes to a close, the Bucs once again defeat Vestavia. As always the defense shows its unyielding ability to hold its opponent. The offense, led by Randy McDoniel, proves too strong for the Rebels, as the Bucs run over Vestavia 22-6. Mountain Brook The players are up for the gome and the spirits are high. The first score starts on Berry ' s own 48 after a kickoff runbock from Krout. A few plays later. Cook passes to Shepherd for 6; an attempt for 2 foils. Just before the half ends, Baxley recovers a fumble on the Spartans ' 24. Three plays later Cook scores. Berry leads the sec- ond half, but cannot moke a comeback, after the Spartans go ahead. The final score is 23-1 2. 71 Erwin Berry puts up a hard fight against the Erwin Eagles. The Bucs cannot put any points on the scoreboard the first half. This leaves the halftime score 10-0 with Erwin leading. Dur- ing halftime the Homecoming Court is announced. Berry returns from the dressing room preparing to outscore the Eagles. The Bucs do, as Berry scores 21 points in the third and fourth quarters. The team ' s defense holds Erwin to 6 points the second half. It Is truly a great homecoming vic- tory. The final score is 21-16. 72 Jess Lanier The Bucs open their first home game with a win over the Tigers. Randy Cook scores late in the first half, on a quar- terback sneak play, making the score 7-0. Coming back to the third quarter Berry is again ready to score. Berry has pos- session of the ball, and moves 55 yards for another touch- down. Jess Lanier scores from the Bucs ' one yard line. An attempt for two points is unsuccessful. The final score ends with Berry ' s victory 1 4-6. 73 Banks Finally, after five years, Berry has a glorious victory over Banks. A pass thrown from Cook to Shepherd puts six points on the scoreboard. Roebuck ' s extra point is good. In the second quarter Banks ties the score. A few plays later. Berry gains the lead with a 22-yard field goal by Roe- buck. The half ends 10-7; Shepherd scores again in the third quarter, running the score up to 1 7-7. Cook scores the next TD. With 1:05 remaining, Wilson blocks a punt and Berry takes over on the Banks four. Nelson, the quarterback, scores the final points. The final score is 29-7. Woodlawn The setting is Lawson Field as Berry battles for victory over Wood- lawn. The Bucs show their preparations for the game when their first driving score is taken in by Shepherd with 4:1 2 left in the first half. The Bucs lead at the half 6-3. In the second half, with a few minutes left in the game. Berry holds the undefeated Colonels to their own 1 9. Berry regains the ball after Woodlawn fails to gain on the fourth down. Cook takes it in for another six points. It is a sweet victory for the Bucs. The final score is 1 2-3. 74 (Ul Row) (l-f) J. Moore, D. Buckner, D. Jones, R. Cook, D. Shepherd, R McDaniel, S. Shaw, D. Throughout the summer months the team practices five days a week. Team members go to gyms and workout, improving their physical condi- tion. When school starts, so does regular practice. These dedicated athletes run mile upon mile getting their mus- cles in tone for the upcoming season. Star Lake is a familar sight to these boys, for it is a regular spot for running. After-school practices are hard on the team. Donkey- squats, minute runs and rope jumping are regular exercises. 77 Coach Harbin pushes these boys to be the best they can be. The basketball season is an exciting one for the team members and their parents and many fans. The team members go out on the court in front of packed stands, proving to all that their train- ing and efforts are not in vain. The Berry High School basket- ball team is one of the best teoms ever. 78 m S v fvj 79 81 Wrestling A victorious start to a new season sparks enthusiasm among the wrestlers. Last year ' s county champs return in top form, but newcomers prove they can uphold the team ' s good image. Such words as takedown, decision, forfeit, spar, and bout become everyday lingo around the school. Malnutrition and obe- sity plague wrestlers during preparation for the upcoming season, but they agree that It ' s worth it. 82 83 if jLiJiN - ' ii A fi 84 VARSITY WRESTLING: ( 1 st Row) H. Behind the scenes, each girl is kept active with long practices, sign painting, sell- ing booster buttons, and going to summer clinic. This year, at Ole ' Miss the squad of 14 receives superior rat- ings. Although the cheerlead- ers must put hours of hard work into the squad, each girl will agree that to be a varsity cheerleader, it is well worth the time. 86 87 Baseball The improvements of the baseball field are appreciated by the team and fans. The baseball players have a strenuous work- out plan to follow: sprints and pick-ups are just a few of the exercises. Every posi- tion must be played perfectly to insure vic- tory. Pitchers, catchers, shortstops, base- men, and outfielders work together to pro- duce an All-State team. Baseball is an exciting game to watch as well as play. Shin-splints and ruptured appendixes plague the team, but the true spirit of cross country comes through. Miles upon miles must be covered in order to attain their final goal: state champions. The volleyball team practices hard all year long perfecting its team work in hopes of attaining a spot in the state tournament each year. The girls all practice individually also, trying to per- fect their bumping, setting, spiking, and serving. All of these efforts result in a totally rounded volleyball team. Gymnastics takes training of mind as well as the body and con- centration is needed to insure easy victories. All of the girls participating in the program are dedicated ath- letes worthy of recognition. Badminton Berry High School has a new sport known as the Berry badminton team. Physical strength and mental concen- tration are installed in each of our golfers. The golf team could become the best ever in the history of Berry High School. 97 Track The participants of the Berry High School track team are very versatile. There are numerous events for them to compete in including shot-put, hurdles, pole vaulting, long jump, sprints, and distance. To pre- pare for each one of these events, much time and training is required. Wrestlers must learn to make the right moves in order to achieve victory. 8th GRADE BASKETBALL: C. Holcomb, N. Williams, F. Matte, D. Steed, G. Murton, M. Nelson, C. Hill, H. Morris, K. Tohill, G. Jr. High Cross Country The members of the Jr. High Cross Country team have ded- ication and stamina. These boys have to run the same courses as the Varsity but for shorter distances. Besides being a prestigious organization of conscientious students, the National Honor Society is one of Berry ' s most active and hard-working clubs. At Homecoming, each member tries hard to sell (and then deliver) his quota of cor- sages. Funds raised from this effort are used to make a donation to the school ' s air conditioning fund and to pur- chase a Christmas gift for the A.F.S. exchange student. Members work In a variety of jobs to get ready for the fall and spring tappings. Including making badges for new mem- bers, preparing refreshments, and writing speeches. The busy year ends with gradua- tion where junior members usher, as seniors proudly dis- play their long-sought gold ropes and tassels. Concerned students and a dedicated sponsor together create one of the school ' s finest organi- zations. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY: (First row) C. DeRoche, P. Smith, L. Brown, M. Waller, K. Interesting days such as Backwards, Rev- erse, and Hat Day during Homecoming Week help promote school spirit. The Air Force Band, Dave Boyer, and Mark Tv ain are some of the guests the Student Council invites to entertain during activity period. Award ' s Day and 50 ' s Day, planned by this invigorating club, are looked forward to by everyone. Through such activities the Student Council hopes to provide enter- tainment and useful information for the student body. H3 Caravel Work for the CARAVEL Staff begins in the summer with the popular phrase Would you like to buy an ad? Cropping pictures, draw- ing layouts, and writing copy are only minor portions of the never- ending tasks facing each staff member. Deadlines begin arriving before all of the nec essary pictures do and a photographer is called in desperation. Last minute identifications and midnight typ- ing are not uncommon before a section is due. The work that begins in mass confusion happily concludes with the arrival of the finished product, the 1976 CARAVEL — a year of memories in words and pictures. Mass confusion is definitely apparent by the scattering of pictures and layouts throughout the room. The all-girl staff may be found wandering the halls daily with the excuse of annual business on the tips of their tongues. Coun- ting ballots for class favorites seems to be an unending task. Moral support is often necessary when deadlines arrive and fellow staff members are ready to help. The work may be hard, but the fun and good times ore always present. This enthusiastic club starts early by showing its willingness to improve the appear- ance of our school. Washing all the windows in the Senior High lunchroom and making curtains for them help create a more invit- ing atmosphere. Ushering at various events at the Civic Center, Municipal Auditorium and Jewish Community Center serves as the club ' s main source of income. The free kisses given out during Homecoming Week are very popular with the students as are the carnations and Santa-grams. Members of this organization serve their commu- nity and their school in a widespread number of activities. The March of Dimes is a major project for the club. After holding a money-raising roadblock for M.O.D., members attend the state convention. Proceeds from a beef raffle also go to the March of Dimes fund. At school, members con be found cleaning the gymna- sium after each basketball game. Painting the lobby of the boys ' gym, and cleaning the stadiunn after varsity games are only two examples of contributions to the improve- ment of the school ' s appearance. Their service to the community is demonstrated by holding a road block for the March of Dimes. A shoe shine is held in front of the office to raise money for the Alabama Sheriffs ' Boys ' Ranch. The main interest of the German Club this year is arranging to host the State Convention. Many hours of hard work are given by the sponsor and members in order to have a successful conven- tion. With more emphasis on independent learning, mem- bers develop their talents as speakers. 133 Future Scientists of America FSA, a club formed to develop more interest in science, is divided into three main groups: biology, chemistry, and physics. Joint meetings on club days usually fill Mrs. Mahon ' s room to capacity. Upcoming events and business related to science projects are the principal subjects of these meetings. During the Christ- mas season, Santa Claus and his helpers are located in the lunchroom. Elves give out candy v hile Santa is busy with any Christmas requests. FSA also participates in Homecom- ing Week. Their main money- making project is selling annual covers each year. Stage Crew Along with the nice advan- tages the Stage Crew enjoys (such as leaving class early for pep rallies and returning late) there is much hard work involved. Each conscientious member spends several eve- nings and holidays laboring at school. Thanks to this club ' s hard work and determination, the operation of the pep ral- lies and assemblies goes smoothly. Health Careers Health Careers is a service club which tries to find and help organizations that are not supported by the public. Money used to benefit various charities is obtained by the selling of candy. This useful club is invited every year to attend a convention which is sponsored by the Health Career Council. An annual convention is held at a local hotel in Birmingham. Toward the end of the year, a banquet is held for club members. 159 The game of tennis has become one of the world ' s most popular sports. Several boys at Berry have formed a Tennis Club. Membership is open only to those who do not play varsity tennis. These boys get together to play tennis and to improve their skills. The Tennis Club is an organization for a specific interest and pur- pose. The Jr. High Student Council works to promote activities for the eighth and ninth grades at Berry. They learn about the operation of a student govern- ment in preparation for the years ahead. Several bake sales are held in order to raise money. This year ' s dedication is to a principal in his third year at Berry. After graduat- ing from Samford and the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa, he taught math at Shades Valley and, immediately before he came to Berry, he was a principal at McAdory High School. Always eager to talk to students and faculty about problems concerning them, he has created a relaxed atmosphere at Berry. His open-mindedness and willingness to cooperate have lifted student morale. Through- out his years at Berry he has held the respect and honor of the stu- dents and the faculty. It is with great pride that we dedicate the 1 976 CARAVEL to Mr. Thomas Lundy Clements. 169 Administration Aren ' t we good looking? Who soys I cannot put my feet up? With every new day, there is a new car parked behind the senior high lunchroom or the boys ' gym that must be moved or towed away. Such prob- lems are becoming second nature to the three men who operate our school with skill and patience. Dealing with parents and teachers, seeing that the buses run smoothly, and making sure students make it to class on time are just a few of the many jobs of our principals. All of this hard and busy work results in one of the best schools in the county and one of which we can be proud. m irwm- ■ 1 ■ • 1 H ■ ;r 1M ■ niMtt m ' V- s • z ' S-i SS ' [ . imm !•■■■■ !!S!S mim Five big ones on Little Boy Blue in the ninth. 170 T. Such things as test tubes, lopsided marbles, scalpels, stopwatches and calculators, and plant life are common- place in any Berry High School science class. The Science Depart- ment is especially noted for its development of the Mahonean The- ory of Relativity. The real excitement in the Science Department, though, is the dissection of such things as cats, frogs, and, of course, the fetal pig. The Science Department also adds some new and exciting changes this year. These changes include students doing their own science projects to put in the first annual Berry High School Science Fair. This department teaches girls to prepare that just right surprise dinner which usually is a REAL surprise! The girls also learn the art of sewing, but more importantly, they learn the art of ripping-out. Of course, a balanced meal is very i mportant; every girl should know how to combine ten vegetables and garlic bread for a scrumptious meal. In the art classes students enjoy such projects as cloy pots, v ater color paintings, crayon etchings, and pen and ink drawings. In speech classes, excitement and expression are shown through voice variations, hand gestures, and three-minute speeches. Besides these daily projects there are also extracurricular activities in these departments. These activities include the annual Berry art show and Berry ' s debate tournaments. Yes, you were saying? Neatness! No use the hands. 187 Library The use of the Library teaches the students responsibility. Because of fines, lost and late books are kept to a minimum. Teaching classes about the library is a new undertaking this year. For Christ- mas, The Library showed its spirit by decorating the windows and playing Christmas carols.
