WE CAME BACK IN THE EARLY FALL TO our Berry; our seemingly liberated Berry which we proclaimed as having been ttblasted free of the old mores and old traditions . . 3, Our path- way to modernity was decisive; we approached it without quivering sighs of how peaceful and predictable our past had been. We assumed that we had discarded the hand-me-downs of previous policy ttleaving in our wake a trial of obsolete but once useful baggage . . f, The result of our forward pacing had removed us from the famil- iar and we had ttlanded in a strange new coun- try? Yet, wherein can the strangeness be identified? Were our feelings of uncertainty founded on un- familiarity with our new Berry, or did these feel- ings extend beyond Berry to the core of our being? Was the strangeness a superficial part of Berry 01' the pursuit of the knowledge of tme ? Have we landed in this ustrange new coun- try, or were we put here without our consent and forced to maintain existence, forced to play the game without having read the book of rules and regulations. Regardless of whether we con- sent to our state of being, we are; and thus, we must react. In our reaction we found the lack of balance between what is right and what is done. At times we were caught in a vicious con- cept of an eternal tWhat is the use and for God,s sake, why botherf But we did bother, for we were not content to be as a fetus in a quasi- surrounding of nothingness, but rather we wanted so much to be as a new born screaming sounds of life and kicking violently for a chance at sur- vival. We reacted to our confused world with all its inconsistencies, problems, and everlasting, unanswerable questions. We watched timidly as the world reacted to college students, to univer- sity riots, demonstrations, and sadly, death on campus. We read about Kent State in the news- paper and were exposed to the ensuing verbal clatter. But what did it mean for Berry? Moratorium - Cancelled in case of rain. Did we have nothing to say or in our confusion, did we find ourselves incapable of being an active part of the environment which had snatched life away? We paused and wondered; our reaction hurt.
