We assumed that we had discarded the hand-me-downs of previous policy ttleaving in our wake a trial of obsolete but once useful baggage . . f, The result of our forward pacing had removed us from the famil- iar and we had ttlanded in a strange new coun- try? Yet, wherein can the strangeness be identified? Were our feelings of uncertainty founded on un- familiarity with our new Berry, or did these feel- ings extend beyond Berry to the core of our being? Was the strangeness a superficial part of Berry 01' the pursuit of the knowledge of tme ? Have we landed in this ustrange new coun- try, or were we put here without our consent and forced to maintain existence, forced to play the game without having read the book of rules and regulations. Regardless of whether we con- sent to our state of being, we are; and thus, we must react. In our reaction we found the lack of balance between what is right and what is done. At times we were caught in a vicious con- cept of an eternal tWhat is the use and for God,s sake, why botherf But we did bother, for we were not content to be as a fetus in a quasi- surrounding of nothingness, but rather we wanted so much to be as a new born screaming sounds of life and kicking violently for a chance at sur- vival. We reacted to our confused world with all its inconsistencies, problems, and everlasting, unanswerable questions. We watched timidly as the world reacted to college students, to univer- sity riots, demonstrations, and sadly, death on campus. We read about Kent State in the news- paper and were exposed to the ensuing verbal clatter. But what did it mean for Berry? Moratorium - Cancelled in case of rain. Did we have nothing to say or in our confusion, did we find ourselves incapable of being an active part of the environment which had snatched life away? We paused and wondered; our reaction hurt. wwggfgwg Wu Wu W A N Mum y We continued being vaguely interested in Viet Nam and occasionally we were reminded that our guys were over there still fighting and still dying. We got busy with the rest of our world and forgot to remember how it was in a little war-torn coun- try. At times we traced the war on square little maps in newspapers printed for the publicis knowledge of whats going on over there, but what do we really know of the whole ugly busi- ness of war? And yet, it is a necessary business e- tisupPose thEy gave a WAl' and nobody CarnE . . P Sometimes our inability to accept this strange- ness drove us to artificial means of escape. Our coping mechanisms went defunct and for a short, absurd time, we intellectually hallucinated our- selves into believing this is where itis at. We were wrong - it is not, nor will it ever be found in a reality contrived by drugs. We will find ourselves from the inside out, and nothing externally in- duced supercedes the inner awareness. What is the it that we as the inhabitants of this strange new land were.searching for? Some- times we faced it alone in our cluttered, dusty rooms with postered walls proclaiming our pseudo-identities with Joplin, Namath, and James Taylor. We scrutinized our minds for a clue to it - a reason for being, a rationale for acceptance, a purpose for existence. Our scrutiny was not pursued in total darkness. We found meaning at odd, unexpected times; we were happy and con- tent as though our human battery had been re- juvenated by a walk to Victory Lake, a work-out in the gym, or a hearty hour of' mop-pushing. Our searching was temporarily appeased as we opened the windows of our active minds and. gave them a chance to air-out and freshen-up. At other times we searched with friends, not our hi and byei acquaintances, but those with whom we had reached an understanding and shared our fears and inadequacies. Together we got past the dialogue of daily troubles, failed exams, unfinished term papers, and parental woes. We gave of ourselves and took in exchange, for the acquisition of meaning is a dual process; to give and refrain from taking results in a lopsided life alfair. Together we flew kites, split taxi fares, borrowed dimes and while we didnit always un- ravel any mysterious cognizance, we experienced each other and that experience was good. AREYOUUP! I AND OCCASIONALLY, WE CAUGHT A glimpse of meaning in a classroom. We surpassed the rote spoon-feeding and regurgitating of facts and perceived the creation of an idea, the finale of undetgtanding, and we learned. It didnit, nor willu it evEr simply happen, it is the effect of a cause. These occasions made some sense of our being here and justified our rising to the de- spised clanging of the alarm clock and bothering to go to class. We benefited when we bothered ourselves to do more than simply sit and trace patterns across desk tops. And the result of our efforts - perhaps, now we can gaze into a mirror seeing more than a freckled nose, a dimpled cheek, an obstinate cowlick, or a shadowy beard. Perhaps now, there is a rehection of a tmei embodied in every ele- ment that combines to create a human. That rehection is tinged with awareness but not black- ened by despair because our world is not perfect. We are reminded that just as the world is not perfect, neither are we and therefore, we suit each other admirably. We have finally realized that life - the good life - will not come timidly tapping on our shoulder; it doesnit hide with us in secure dorm rooms or exist in a dormant stage with our never- ending routine of mediocrity. Our good life, isn7t compartmentalized into badness and good- ness, love and hate, war and peace, understand- ing and prejudice; but rather, it scans the gamut of all this and still finds reason for being. If we simply wait for life to come to us, we will have lived for nothing e suppose we LIved, FEared, and loved In Secret and NobOdy kneW . . . z, i, ; 9,3, : ' ' 15 ,, r .my- ,w..,,,.-.k MA, ;; w E L L BERRY CO .LEnHmA DUNE MLHR. They function as a work- ing part of the system which insures communica- tive processes among the student body, the faculty, and the administration. The SGA is not bound in endless talk sessions in which they alternate between the respective roles of speaker and spoken to. They often sur- pass this verbal exchange and realize the achieve- ment which has justified the long hours of dis- cussion, the seemingly moot questions, and the experience of having successfully communicated. Even though our SGA neither initiated nor prohibited a riot, a demonstration, or campus dissonance - they listened when we spoke, they channeled our language through red tape and we benefited from their efforts. . mkr- mm, . Using the expressive art form of vocal harmony, the Berry Readers have voiced such publications as poems, plays, childrents books, and student- faculty essays. Under the leadership of their advisor Tommy Key, the Berry Readers have given their listeners the reminder that expressive interpretation is merely the verbalization of our innate capability to have and to feel emotion - namely laughter and tears. That beat suits no other but is solely his own composition. His interpreta- tions of thistlife with its staccato ups and downs, syncopating stresses, and quiet melodies are rehected in his music. The Concert Choir begins with a copy of marfs rehections and then, initiates the process of transforming these into sound sensations. Their repertoire includes an assortment of music ranging from popular medleys to the more se- rene hymns. Their power to resurrect penned melodies into vibrant concerts and relate a mes- sage is evident in the reactions of their audi: ences; they have made music a part of our rhythm of life. Becky Crawford served as president with Ross Magoulas director. Berry Singers PEOPLE SING TO FORGET, TO REMEM- ber, to weep, to laugh, and to entertain. Al- though they sing for all of 'these reasons, the Berry Singers go further and sing because they like to sing. They sing because that is their cho- sen way of saying we have a message to share and a part of ourselves to give. Performing both on and off campus, the Berry Singers have succeeded in sharing their feelings through the musical poetry of song. They have succeeded in letting a part of themselves be known and understood by standing before an audience and exhibiting their talent. Under the directorship of Ross Magoulas, the Berry Singers have not only provided entertain- ment for an audience, but they have also enter- tained themselves. Kappa Alpha THE NEED TO CEASE BEING OURSELVES and Lto:,ybe.ckome someone else, gives an oppor- tunity'Tor the creation of an actor. Kappa Alpha was formed to present proof that entertainment is not only benelicial to an enthusiastic audience, but also to the actors. Their purpose of promot- ing interest and entertainment in the fields of theater and fine arts has been planned and car- ried out under an extensive program that in- cludes 3 KA Fine Arts Bulletin in the Campus Carrier and the presentation of various plays throughout the year. The Club has also founded the KA scholarship program in drama. To be a member of Kappa Alpha a student must accumulate a required number of points in acting and backstage work and must be voted on by the fraternity as designated by Alpha Psi Omega. Serving as president of KA was Dennis Kreider. Ramifications CREATIVE PEOPLE POSSESS A RICHNESS for the power of expression. They are unique beings of adverse reactions - as silent and still as their grey watercolors and then, as tingling and Vivid as their newly written love poems. At times their work is happy and hopeful, inviting each of us to partake of laughter and know the meaning of humor. At other times they express the desolation and despair of broken spirits and of a world which doesnit understand and can,t be bent to lit our human needs. Their life is a many faceted affair with expression. They have learned to create tangibles where tformless feel- ings, exist. The Ram staff compiles the work of Berryis creative students and presents a composite of paintings, sculpture, haikus, free verse, essays, and songs. All entries are original and have not been previously published. Editor of Ramijications was Mike Wickham. Campus Carrier ttOUR CHANNELS ARE BUILT WITH concern and ambition to achieve our goal - to communicate successfully that which interests the majority of our readers? Thus; the Campus Carrier became an extension of the process that we all were striving to attain - that process of the mutual exchange of ideas, philosophies, humor, and the recognition of what makes news. At times we focused on Berry news, giving front page status to our people who accomplished something special. We viewed the light side of college through amusing anecedotes and cartoon features, we acknowledged selected members of Whots Who, we grumped about this or found fault with that, and on occasion, we recognized the value and worth of our Berry. At other times, our scope expanded and for a short time, we became aware of a world sur- rounded in dissonance - a world of wars and hate and troubles. We were made aware of this and having been made aware, we wondered. Our wondering was good, for in the gamut of news, we found inspiration and hope. We hurried to finish class photographs and to begin practice for the production of the 1971 Miss Berry College Pageant in November. We were relieved and pleased as we viewed the finale of crowning night and knew that our efforts had been good. We will remember that absurd, confounded Monday: American Publishing Company had temporarily mislocated page 112 of the senior section; Astra misplaced the negatives of the prints of the Concert Choir, the Berry Singers, and Alpha Chi; the Chicago post office sent us a notice that three rolls of film had been lost or destroyed in handling tthree rolls of undoubtedly superb shots of the faculty and administratiom; Authur was confined to the clinic with mononu- cleosis; and Lonnie had the dire misfortune of - puncturing his wrist with an ice pick. We res- trained a chuckle deep in our abdomens, not daring to engage in nail-chewing, lest we com- plete that dastard Monday in dire need of ap- pendectomies. The hurry continued and Cabin Log ,71 was completed one week after the close of basketball season. Now pursuing ttthe unhurry lifeit are Lonnie Gibson, business manager, sports editor turned photographer, and production manager of the Miss Berry College Pageant; Art Saus, organ- izations editor and photographer; Cathy Ellis, classes editor; Kathy Price, profaner of the type- writer; Herman Higgins, photographer and Ca- bin Log cornerstone; and Mrs. Helen Morgan, unique friend and advisor. 0 $017. 4,2,7. o vI 19. ! The Dana Scholars, 'with their encouragement of higher academic achievement, have instituted a means and ends procedure of challenge and ac- complishment. A realization of what we are and what we can become is easily seen in their re- quirements of reputable character and responsi- ble citizenship. Members must have a 3.5 average to become a Dana Scholar and then must maintain a 3.0 aver- age to remain a member. Projects for this year include a tutorial pro- gram, a high school recruitment project, and rec- ognition of their choice of book of the year. Serving as president was Lana Copeland. Dr. Carper and Dr. Gandy were advisors. Alpha Chi TO HAVE JUST A NAME AND A CROWD is acceptable in our society, but there are those who strive to create for themselves more than just a name. Alpha Chi with the recognition of the top ten per cent of the Junior and Senior classes, has reserved a place for those students who have become aware of the joys of learning and the need within themselves to be themselves. Under the leadership of president Jim Abney and advisor Dr. Jorge Gonzalez activities have been designed to invite outstanding speakers to the campus, to read and discuss papers written by faculty and students, and to debate issues of current interest. H. HWM H H Phi Alpha Theta HISTORY IS THE FOUNDATION UPON which the present is built and there are those students who build their interests upon this foundation. Phi Alpha Theta offers students a chance to discover workable relationships of past phenomena concurring with whatts happening now. To become a member of Phi Alpha Theta stu- dents must have at least a 3.1 average and twenty hours in history. They must have an overall 3.0 average. Activities for this year included having a guest lecturer, Dr. Richard Lucas, a banquet, participa- tion in the southern conference, and a tutorial program. Judith J epson served as president. Advisor was Dr. Gordon Carper. Sigma Tau Delta SIGMA TAU DELTA WAS FOUNDED FOR those students who have a desire to be creative through writing. They seek to express life in terms of truth and to make a first-hand ac- quaintance with the chief literary masterpieces of our language. To be eligible for membership in Sigma Tau Delta, an individual must be interested in pro- moting the mastery of written expression, en- couraging worthwhile reading, 'and fostering a spirit of fellowship among men and women spe- cializing in English. Active membership is limited to upperclassmen majoring in English. Under the leadership of president, Phyllis Wills, Sigma Tau Delta has carried out certain projects including booksales, sponsoring a book of the quarter, and trips to operas and theaters in Atlanta. Advisors were Dr. Cantrell and Mr. 8: Mrs. Dupree. FCA BECAUSE MEANING IS NECESSARY FOR life, it is also an essential element for any parts that make up life. One of these parts is sports participation. The Fellowship of Christian Athletes attempts to further the principles of Christian living by providing meaning to the work and effort that is present in sports. Under the leadership of president, Bob Mur- dock, a social event is planned each quarter for members and help is to be provided for area schools who would like to begin FCA chapters. This organization is open to both men and women. They do not necessarily have to be ath- letes. Advisors this year were Dr. Garland Dickey and Coach Don Jones. BSU THE BAPTIST STUDENT UNION EXPRESS their purpose in terms of involving students in a college life that exemplifies the Christian under- standing of the responsibility of a life with Christ. Their desire is to be subordinate to Godis will - subordinate by choice and by the recognition of the omnipotence of God. Their belief is not founded on systemized dogma of the church, but rather on the recognition that one becomes ac- quainted with this Godt through personal com- mitment. This acquaintance surpasses a confining list of rules and regulations for successful Christian living. Members of the BSU participated in youth revivals, sponsored a Punch Party, held a Thanks- giving banquet, and organized committees to lead devotions in the dorms. Polly Moore served as president with Dr. McDonald as advisor. Christian Science THE CHRISTIAN SCIENCE ORGANIZATION affords Berry,s community the opportunity to learn more about Christian Science. It serves as a welcoming committee for those interested in the Christian Science teachings. Christian Science holds a weekly testimonial meeting at which all are welcome and there are future plans to show a film with the emphasis on life as a Christian Scientist. Requirements for acceptance into this club are active membership, complete freedom from other denominational ties, and the willingness to apply the teachings of Christian Science in co-operation with the other religious clubs on Berryts campus. Acting as president this year was Donald Bell. Dr. Hoyt served as advisor. YWCA THE YOUNG WOMENiS CHRISTIAN AS- sociation seeks to obtain a better understanding and a deeper relationship with other people. Their efforts to effect this relationship can be seen in the activities they sponsor on campus. Foremost of their activities is their service to the children of the Open Door Home. Members of the Y, with other interested students, make their friendship and time available for a walk to the ice-cream parlor, a romp 0n the playground, or a holiday party. Members have also made contributions to the Larry Howard Fund and joined in the Walk for Mankind. They continued sponsoring Sunday Happenings and worked with the Rome Jaycees in the Easter Seal drive. Gloria Vaughn served as president, with Miss Haack and Mrs. Doss acting as advisers. Phi Beta Lambda PHI BETA LAMBDA IS COMPOSED OF business administration majors and minors seeking to develop qualities that will enable them to par- ticipate effectively in the business and professional realm. Iyza, ' .M- l Industrial Arts THE PUTTING TOGETHER OF SMALL pieces and parts, in such a way as to form one composite of a unified whole is the process of creating e to begin with several disjointed articles and proceed to form an object with definite shape and meaning. And thus, the Industrial Arts Club took nails, lumber, paint, imagination and time - combined them and produced a service to Berry and the Rome community. Their service included building frame stretchers for the Art Department and making letter holders for the Office of Development. A special com- munity service project was the designing and building of a Santa Claus, his helpers, and eight reindeer. Advisors to the Industrial Arts Club were Dr. Luton, Mr. Bowen, and Mr. Flourney. Terry Ezzell served as president. Circle K FOR A CLUB TO HAVE A MOTTO IS A seemingly necessary requirement, but for a club to carry out their motto is a rare achieVe- ment. The Circle K has succeeded in the rare achievement of carrying out their motto of iiWe Build? Created as a campus and community service organization, the Circle K sponsored an orphan in Vietnam, collected money for muscular dystro- phy, sponsored a series of lectures entitled iiEle- ments of our Environment? donated blood to the blood bank, and published the basketball programs. Under the leadership of President Ken Scott, Circle K has also helped to restore the Coffee House and has sponsored a Donkey Basketball game. Art Club THROUGH THE EFFORTS OF THE ART club in presenting exhibitions of various types, the student body and the Rome community were given the opportunity to assess the value of cre- ativity and perhaps, find new meaning in a con- trast of color, a bizarre interpretation, or a strug- gle of texture. Thus, the Art Club advanced the realm of art - with all its uncertainty, its fascina- tion, and its beauty e as a means of enjoyment, introspection and acquaintance with expression. The Art Club provides the opportunity for stu- dents to display their work and offers their ser- vices to other campus organizations and community clubs. Yates Floyd School Of Nursing WE APPROACHED OUR NURSING CA- reers with apprehensive fear - yet there was a job to be done and we wanted so much to be a part of the profession, to mingle our ability with the needs of others and know that good would result from our efforts. We began by timidly tip-toeing in white, spot- less shoes down corridors of a seemingly mag- nanimous structure - a hospital. Our too long dresses swished around our legs reminding us that our freckled, dimpled knees were suHiciently covered and that we could stoop at the water fountain without looking behind us. We whis- pered in fear of destroying the awesomeness of the hospital atmosphere, but our whispers were transformed to laughter, giggles, and on occa- sion, tears, as we found our niche in this vast surrounding. We overcame our initial fear of the building and finally understood clearly that a hospital is people. We saw the pain and for a time felt the hurt; we saw the suffering and knew a better time would come; we saw death and then life, violent and kicking, in the newborn. We learned to bend, to give all that we could, and when we could do no more, to accept that which we could not change for all our hopes. We kept on work- ing, studying, 'and helping those who needed us. Together we realized it is a good life. i -!.;L,.- 153 Seniors LINDA DICKERSON DIANE HALL ELVA KINNEBREW PEGGY KORNEGAY LINDA MCGAHEE JACKIE NEWBY LINDA PEARSON DIANE PURCELL PHYLLIS SALMON VICKY WARBINGTON Gail Bennett Betsy Bostwick Peggy Clarke Becky Davis Debbie Davis Kathy Deems Judy DeMore Ellen Funsten Janet Hall J eannine Haynes Lynn Jarrett Jimmie Jones Gwenita KeatOn Leigh Lowry Myrna McIntosh Jeanne Murdock Sharon Murphy Debbie Smith Martha Smith Cindi Woodall J uniors Freshmen Frances Bell Sonja Bloomfield JoAnn Brown Martha Cline Teresa D Amato Mary Duncan Debbie Johnson Cynthia Kinnebrew Juanita LaRue Karen Mangel Hilda Mooney Glenice Mosteller Cherry Odom Becky Rasure Sharon Riel Pamela Tucker Ruth Watkins Patricia Weaver ADMINISTRATION and FACULTY Administration DAN BIGGERS M Dean of Sludentx JOHN R BERTRAND President THOMAS GANDY Academic Dean BETTY BARBOUR GARY WOOLLEY ROBERT LATTIMORE Dean of Women Assistant Dean of Students Executive Assistant to the Prexidenl 160 INEZHENRY Assistant Vice-President V S. The secret of Coach Jonesl men lay in spirit motiva- tion and determination Early 1n the season Berry began 1 to let GIAC opponents know that it was the team they all had to contend with. Berry totaled more points in its first et than did all of her first four opponents com- bined??55. April, Berryls thinclads shocked nationally recognlz d. eges and universities by running wild over Emory U ersity, Wofford College and Milligan Col- lege. Berry. totaled one hundred and fifteen points and smashed th S closest bid by Wofford by nearly thirty. points. , In Ma Berry placed third 1n the Georgia State Meet H behind Georgia Tech and the University of Georgia; once again putting Coach Jones and his Vikings on the map. Berrys Track Team boasted four men who scored in the three digit figures; Freshman Chester Forsh with two hundred twenty-nine, Freshman Jim Inman with one hundred-flfty, Sophomore Charley Wampler with one hundred twenty-flve and Freshman Brian Anderson with one hundred eleven. Losing only three Seniors to graduation, the Berry har- riers look to even higher goals than this yeafs twenty-four and four record. In only three years of extensive rebuild- ing, Coach Jones has brought Berry College to a place of respect among the large colleges and universities in the Southern United States. ix mm mm '-. u..w ; . u g, mm m '? ? -' Q .xu , n . 3 $3M k L v i x I w IN I M a HHY , v H mm K. r f Soccer THE SOCCER TEAM EXHIBITED A SURPRISTNG amount of talent for a team forced out of athletic per- spective by teams coached by members of the Athletic Department. In its eighth year of existence at Berry, soc- cer is still made to take a back seat to basketball, base- ball and track due to an apparent lack of concern, at best, on the part of athletic planning. Operating on a shoe string budget and playing in a left-over field of grass, the Fury demonstrated a spirit not often found on Berryts scholarship supported teams. The men who played the sport did so because of their love of friendly, rough and tumble competition and they received no money, little recognition and absolutely no quarter in the classroom. Their Coach, August deBerdt was a professor in the Foreign Language Department. Apathy toward soccer at Berry had finally begun to spill over into the student body. The Fury, once com- prised of twenty to twenty-five men, this year numbered only fifteen, one of whom was the manager. The crowds which once shouted and screamed in support of a power- ful and proud first eleven or laughed and harassed a well-meaning ttnut squad? this year dwindled in num- ber. Often as many well wishers showed up at games in Alabama and Tennessee as did for home games. So the Fury fought, relaxed and fought again, dis- gusted at one time, on cloud nine at another. Their shins sore, ribs aching and term papers questionably short, the men of the soccer team battled larger teams from larger colleges with more money and better equip- ment. But ironically, the Fury fought not only for vic- tories over other colleges but also for recognition at their own college. The outstanding last season 01 Seniors Bostick, Bright, Stepowany, Barrineau and Jones must be recognized. Special mention, however must go to Wayne Stepowany for he remembers the Fury of 1966 that went undefeated but had to decline an invitation to the National Playoffs due to a unique situation for any winning team at Berry, a lack of funds. Berry ran a much tougher group of opponents this year and still managed to impress nationally ranked teams. In the Georgia State meet, Berry,s Cross Country team, composed entirely of underclassmen, tinished eighteenth in a field of thirty-six. In Franklin, Tennessee, Berry whipped Southeastern Conference giant Vanderbilt and two days later at home, rolled easily over Emory. Owing much of their success to the ever-present drive of Coach Jones, Berry ran roughshod over conference competitors most of the time. Ironically Berry was once again denied the GIAC Championship by a matter of a few points. itGall-darnitPi Jones looks to next year when the entire team will return and present the most powerful Berry Cross Country team in twenty years and seri- ously bid for the elusive GIAC crown. With an attitude of iican-dd, and a great deal of hard, thankless training our men who ran Cross Country deserve a well-earned mo- ment of gratitude for the honor they have brought home. Varsity Basketb all THE VIKING HARDWOOD YEAR WAS TOUGH, dis- astrous as a matter of fact. We managed 16 more field goals than our opponents but fell short at the foul line by 231 points. While we averaged a 71 point game average, we were bettered by our opponents 77 point average. Vik- ings were led by big Barry Griswell Who tallied 13.5 points per game and cleaned the backboard an average of ten times per game. Junior, Eschol Curl, averaged 11 points per game and was Berryts shining star at Jacksonville State when he tallied 26 points. Sophomores, Danny Brown and Gary Throckmorton, netted 9 points per game on the aver- age. We did, however, in this lackluster season manage a few high points. We got ltuptt for Shorter and froze them outlas they fouled us to victory. Two nights later, behind the out- standing showing of Eschol Curl and Dave Foulk, we edged Augusta in the closing seconds of a terrific battle. In the rematch with Shorter at their homecoming, we drew Hawk-blood on their court. It seemed that only our arch-rival could get us to pull together this year. Oftentimes coach and team were as dis- tant as north and south poles, possibly because it seemed that there was no first team. Some members yo-ydd be- tween the JV and Varsity squads as often as freshmen boys visited the girls at Ford; maybe this was part of the trouble. Viking fans were often dismayed at coaching tactics. Riding on the crest of the Shorter victory, Viking Day and the win over Augusta, it seemed that we had everything going for us as we faced Georgia Southwestern for home- coming. The first half was rough and we went into the locker room as slight underdogs, but the second half was even rougher. We slipped and found ourselves down 15 points and then substitutions were made so often that not even the team members could keep up with who was on the court. As the final buzzer sounded, a stunned student body watched a heart-broken team go down in defeat by 24 points. All of which seems to indicate that any five men and a coach does not make a team, rather a squad pulling in as many as six directions. We identitied with Jan Smith, the little guy who ran cir- cles around and sometimes over opponents. Whitey Tucker impressed opponents and their fans, but he often found himself using the jab rather than the jump-shot. Hopes for next year rest with Smith, Riegle, Curl, Throckmorton and the like, if they chose to play. w: 1 . M, PERSUD 1 ; 0'. Piedmont J unior Varsity Basketball THE JV SQUAD WAS CALLED UPON MORE OFTEN than usual to supply manpower to the Varsity team this year. As a result their record suffered somewhat. Led by powerful Mike Kinney, who averaged 14 points and also saw considerable Varsity duty, the JV squad posted a 12 and 6 record. Don Horn, who later moved up to Varsity, averaged 13 points a game and was followed to the Varsity squad by Chester Forsh, who averaged 14 points a game. Sparked by Tim Warrick, the Junior Varsity squad sup- plied much needed support for the Varsity team and posted a respectable season record in so doing. Herein rests the hopes for next yeafs Varsity comeback. Cheerleaders THE CHEERLEADERS ARE NOT LIKE MOST OF us. Spirit and enthusiasm to them are as tangible as day and night. To them, it is the warmth they feel deep inside when we come alive, screaming and yelling, jump- ing to our feet as we did when the basketball team froze Shorter out in the Iinal minutes on the night of January third. Remember how proud we were when Dr. Gandy announced that the following day would be Viking Day. To the cheerleaders, Viking Day occurs every time a Berry athlete plays. Spirit and pride are easily found when Victory is in the air; but, it is often not so easily found when the biting sting of defeat presents itself. However, our cheerleaders yell just as loud and bounce just as high each game of every sport throughout the season. Womenas Basketball LED BY IRIS KINNEBREW, LINDA MONT- gomery, and Jan Bailey, the Lady Vikings finished third in the Southern Women,s Athletic Conference. Iris, Linda, and Sandra were chosen as numbers one, two, and three respectively, on the SWAC all-conference team. With only two seniors, the Lady Vikings played many teams with more experience and hnished with an impressive 12 and 5 record, being edged out of the confer- ence championship by Hiwassee and West Geor- gia. Look out next year, when Miss Rowe brings on deadeyes such as Iris Kinnebrew, Linda Montgomery, and Cheryl Miller, who together averaged a fantastic 7070 at the free throw line and a deadly 487;; from the hoor. Special mention is made of Miss Jan Bailey, one of the teanfs seniors, who finished with a 667Z; accuracy record at the free throw line and 4896 from the floor. She sparked the Vikettes through- out the season and will be missed next year.
