Cabin og Nineteen Sixzyf Six Lynda Witt Editor in Chief Frank Davis Associate Editor Martha Shears Business Manager Max A. Schaible Advisor Beryl College Mount Beryl, Georgia Trees are cut, thereby changing the exterior of a community. F elled customs and traditions change the mood and general feeling of a community. Such a communityemay be and is Berry College. The Rqllectzons o cz Changing Face Berry is no longer a small school,' she has grown too much to be in that category. Be- cause of this stretching process the school has put aside old customs and adopted new. These old customs and new customs make up the emotionalface ofthe school. As a face is tempered by what is felt behind it, so it is with a college, she presents a mask to reflect what she is like and feels underneath. The most obvious ofcourse is the outward physical changes, Hermann Hall, an imposing brick struc- ture set at end of a new sweeping drive. Here the campus pulse may be felt, the in and out of stu- dents, at registration, orientation classes, confer- ences, pay checks and bills and work. The new roads, parking lots and driving regulations changed the trafic situation and shortened the distance between campuses. The discovery of the Art treasures, the plans for the new class rooms and men 's dormitory, these are some of the present changes and changes in progress. Much as we admire the physical symbols o f growth on our beloved college grounds, a cultural revolution must also grow, with a student body that will initiate it. , , IPHASIS w1.r.4f.,,,N nw 0 KH W Thy5eH Be it private college or state university, the one- way road for an institution is toward progress. Every Fall sees a change over in classes,' an old group has gone out and a new one replaces it with ever-increasing numbers. The growing music department was moved into the former administration building, thereby in- creasing classroom space. The drama department gained a new instructor who made a smashing success of the Fall Produc- tion before a crowd of students and Rome citizens. A few of the upperclassmen can remember a cer- tain retired English professor who gave a special name to our beautdul red maple trees. The Halle- lujah trees were being forgotten as such, but an issue of the .Campus Carrier brought them back to mind this Fall. Why is a college? For the education of the stu- dents, for the mental, physical, and spiritual growth of these students, that is the reason for a college. Berry College was originally founded in this spirit and because of the many revisions the spirit re- mains the same. A group of signs hung in Blackstone dining hall 'show some of the old and some of the new. The traditional is Religious Emphasis Week, and the current vogue the hootenanny. The private college ofers close association be- tween professor and student. Dr. O'Neal is a familiar face in Valhalla as are many other teach- ers, always ready to share their leisure as well as classroom time. I Old customs of Mountain Day . . . uni- forms and the football game . . . remained intact. As a safety device the football players wore flags attached to their belts, adding color and new excitement to the game. .1 4. .L The day by day activities of most of the students includes classes, perhaps library work, and in the evening at Thomas Berry Hall some avid television watchers. Some of the old, some of the new, the beat generation . . . they should go hand in hand for the benefit of the college and for the best for all. Education is the light to man's mind and Berry has an important part in spreading that light. May she continue to shine with ever- increasing brilliance. Kaleidoscope Faculty ..... Organizations Sports .... Classes . . . Miscellany .. Table 0 Contents 1 The haze of summer settled in june and a small group of regular students remained to work and for the classes that were ojered. The summer school was a big sign of the change, with increased class schedules and many day students coming from the surrounding counties. Vahalla remained busy during the lunch hours, filled with day students dis- cussing home, classes and who had the worst professor . . . - aj, . . . For the resident student there was time and room for the individual to as- sert himself As entertainment there were movies in the evening and Our Town was presented by an enthusiastic group of students. The library stayed in busi- ness with a handful of students who were in and out for study or sometimes, pleasure reading. As summer school grows year after year the importance of the library increases. The Changzng Summer Season I The heat got almost unbearable at times as july faded into August and August into September. Then around the last of the month students, old and new, began re- turning for registration. The crowd seemed as though it would never quit coming, fill- ing dormitory space to overflowing. Every- one was jitted in some how and the new academic year was begun. BERRY COLLEGE NEWS SERVICE Prom inenl Vzlsitors ROBERT B. LUCE, energetic publisher of The New Re- public, comes to Mount Berry, Georgia on Wednesday, March 30, 1966 to address the Berry College student body. Mr. Luce is responsible for administering one of Americals most influential journals of independent opinion. Since 1914, according to one of its six founding editors, Walter Lipp- mann, The New Republic has been a magazine of un- opinionated opinion whose touchstone is the civilized tra- dition itself . BERRY COLLEGE NEWS SERVICE- TOM EWELL, Broadway and screen star comes to the campus in February as the second speaker in the Berry College Esso Distinguished Lecturer Series. Ewell will appear on February 22 in the lecture series in- augurated October 22 by Theodore C. Sorensen, special counsel and biographer of the late john F. Kennedy. The series is financed by the Esso Education Foundation of New York. CAMPUS CARRIER e-fav .Y 'A 2' .... ,A--.s THEODORE C. SORENSEN, special counsel to the late President John F. Kennedy, will address Berry College stu- dents and faculty at 5:15 p.m. Friday, October 22, in the Berry College Chapel. Sorensen's appearance on the Berry College campus in- augurates Berry's Esso Distinguished Lecturer Series. Sorensen's Berry lecture will deal essentially with the impact on history of Kennedy's years in the White House and his influence on future elections, administrations and policy makers. BERRY COLLEGE NEWS SERVICE The Expanding Campus The task of building a college takes dreams, con- crete ideas, funds, painstaking plans and time, time, time. Each new structure is a milestone of progress and part of the promise of the future. After the initial impression of beauty and vastness we tend to forget our campus until a visitor, a painting or a photograph recalls it. The Memorial Building A vague memory of the old lingers as the new is built in and around the traditional. This collec- tion of visual memories grows with the passing years and classesg with continued dedication this growth will mold Berry into one of the outstand- ing colleges of the Southeast. He is not only seeking to become a citizen, an effective member of modern society, a participant in public and organizational activities, but he already is, or should be all of these things. Student Govern- ment is a concept which offers students a chance to prove that they are responsible individuals. As a member of the Student Government Association for the academic year 1965-1966, the Berry College Student found a means of expression through the Student Coun- cil. In this year of development the Student Council began to discover some of its potentials. It began to express more and more of an influence upon campus life. The weekly meeting of the Student Council was recognized as an avenue for responsible student expression. The Student Council offered the students the opportunity to express themselves as responsible individuals and they began to make use of it. Thus it was all in all a most successful year. j.P. Judiciagf Committee As an arm of the Student Council, the judiciary Committee of 1965 1966 provided Berry College Students an opportunity to voice responsible self criticism. The SOUTH WINDS is an anthology of poetry, es- says, and short stories written and published by stu- dents.
