Miss Barnes has served Berry for forty-six years. She first came to Mount Berry from her home in Saluda, South Carolina, as a student in 1915, and a year after her graduation in 1918, she returned to the campus to serve as hostess and supervisor in Berry's guest cottages on the Log Cabin Campus. Miss Barnes is a professional in her field, and among those who have praised her hospitality, her beautiful table and her excellent food have been the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry Ford, the famous aviatrix Amelia Earhart, the gracious Mrs. Emily V. Hammond and countless other Well known friends of Berry. Alice Barnes has inspired and stimulated hun- dreds of Berry College women who have gained their work experience in the guest cottages, and the fortunate students who have sat down to a meal prepared by Miss Barnes and her girls can attest to her culinary talents. Out of a deep respect for her and her service to Berry, the editors and staff members of Cabin Log 1965 dedicate this book to Alice Barnes. -9. ,, 3, .-:Simi .:, 1 - .f . . .: u ' .iiwgu .N , u fu I 'ek ' 1+ W W r .. . - 'rfuf 1- ' X 7.x ' W5 15-Z 1 ,M ,H .N 3 , l,,.N,L1 - -4 ,H g 1 J ' .. A professor, a teacher, an instructor can only guide individual initiative and effort. But where does our education continue? What kind of bookspdo we choose to read? What caliber and variety of entertainment do we seek? What worthwhile personal experiences do we create for ourselves? With whom do We associate, and what is the value of our daily conversation? All these aspects of our life broaden and enrich what we learn in the classroom, but to what advantage do we use them? L In 1 5 ,vw ummm , ,,,. Y'Yv',x5,. Sunday hat . . . beautiful sunset . . . church service . . . laughter or tears. But what is it to us? For too many of us, the religious program at Berry has too long been covered in the dust of the past. Until this year, we did nothing about our feelings except murmur and occasionally complain. This year, as a result of our construc- tive interests, we see concrete changes beginning to take place to meet the religious needs of the student. . . . in our work habits Our college Work experience program was de- signed not only to help the student meet his own financial needs, but also to help develop the qualities of good workmanship so he could know the satisfaction of work well done. Work is the seasoning of existence. But as a part of our general apathy and attitude, work too often has become a drudgery, the requirements of existence and not a seasoning. Most of us gain little from it-for we put little into it. x x., I HN L- -ww., ...' g- www- -, V... until, .hh An :.gg-Fw' 1n the beauty of our campus There are few places more beautiful than Berry. Nowhere did God create more inspiring hills, trees, woodlands or flowers. Even the rain, sometimes endless, and the wind, often cold and piercing, have a beauty of their own. And un- knowingly the beauty of the campus and the elements add a bit of education to four years at Mount Berry. They are something we can either see and take with us or something we never notice and leave behind. Qs' wx J . ,M Q. B 4 'I .- ', -4 if.,-, . . in the way we spend our leisure The ancient Socrates believed there ought to be leisure in life so men would have time to think. Then, there were thinkers and no leisure . . . now, leisure abounds and there are no thinkers. We go instead-to Valhalla to drink and be merry, to the television set in the dormitory for a Weekend of Napoleon Solo and old movies, to the local hangout, or anywhere to escape. Why don't we know what to do with our leisure? Where are the simple joys of youth? 1n the tradltions of our founder Martha Berry was not a saint as she has some- times been pictured, but a southern lady who saw a need and answered it with action. She furnished an opportunity for an education to many . . . and you and I have benefited from it. She had definite ideas about education-a three- fold education to enlighten the mind, to enrich the soul and to strengthen the body. Hers were practical ideas, and although the symbols may have changed, Martha Berry's concept is time- less and continues to live and grow. - EJ f 1' . il 1 . 3 13 '41 .W V W f , , I 0 g 9. u .V W -4 I WW, IW 1 9 'ii ' of V - ' W . , of - - W 'Q 3 af. 1 3 W E .w 2. .M wa A 0 it . It can be seen in the content and quality of its dramatic programs, in its special events, in what it appreciates as worthwhile and beautiful. It can be read in the personalities of its leaders and in the faces of those who stand alone in a crowd. And it can be read in its ability to progress in ideas and in its quickness and readiness to adapt to ever-changing times. 1 MISS BERRY COLLEGE 1965 TEXIE OSBORNE' 'W-Q? We have seen the face of Berry change in many ways-some good, some not so desirable. But in reflection, one always picks out the kinder things to remember. I hope each of you who has been a part of Berry has added something and will take away some of the good things it has offered. And I hope all your memories will be fond ones. To those of the Cabin Log staff of 1965, I say a special Thank you. Camilla Hale Miller Editor-in-Chief 55 Z, 1 M .fl I , ,gf W I5 1 Ao W Jil' r f 1?
