John R. Timmerman, Ph.D. ACADEMIC DEAN A most vigorous man in seeing that Berry’s academic record remains high in the srhall college class is our Academic Dean, Dr. Timmerman. Dean Timmerman received his A.B. from Furman Univer- sity in 1931 where he graduated summa cum laude. He re- ceived his M.A. from Duke University and also married in 1938. Dr. Timmerman was drafted in 1943 after teaching at Averett Junior College and N. C. State. In 1946 he returned to teaching at Furman University and taught there until going to the University of Texas where he received his Ph.D. Dr. Tim- merman then went to Louisiana College as head of the English Department in 1952. In 1956 he became Academic Dean there and remained until coming to Berry on June 1, 1960. Dr. Timmerman’s record speaks well of his academic ability and we feel fortunate in having him during our transition period into the quarter system next year. Wilbur D. Keister, Ed.D. DEAN OF STUDENTS Probably one of the busiest men on campus is Dr. Wilbur D. Keister, Berry’s Dean of Students. However, no matter how busy he is, he seems to always have time to see everyone. efle Dr. Keister received his B.S. from Miami University in 1948. He attended New Mexico Highlands for his M.A. Dr. Keister received his Ed.D. from the University of Arizona in 1959 after coming to Berry in 1957. Dr. Keister was in the U. S. Navy during World War II and participated in the initial landing at Normandy on V-Day. He was also in the Korean conflict. Popular and respected are the words describing Dr. Keister. Berry has profited greatly in having such an active man as” Dean of Students. oth A} rece Tee {dou ;

President’s Message In this period of vast and momentous achieve- ments during which, for example, man has pene- trated space, the everyday tasks of individuals might seem to have lost some of their significance. Contrary to such an assumption, however, is the fact that individuals will continue to play vital roles in meeting the challenges of your generation and the generations to come. Without individual thought and effort, even the greatest of accomplishments could not have been. Without the inspired vision of educated minds, dreams can only die, unfulfilled. Your college education can help you transform dreams into reality. In the years ahead, may you use your education generously and wisely, accepting with it the responsibilities that privilege entrusts to you. Berry College has grown in character and stature because of your presence here. Her repu- tation will continue to grow as you establish for yourselves beyond her gates high standards of moral integrity, hard work and high-minded thinking. May the knowledge of your minds be increased with wisdom and understanding, and may God guide you beyond the thresholds of destiny. DR. JOHN R. BERTRAND President

| E. B. Hatcher, B.S. DEAN OF MEN Mr. E. B. Hatcher is Berry’s newest Dean, but he has, in bffect, become an “old hand” as the Dean of Men. A good ; example of his ability is that he has somehow managed to ygsubdue the noise in T.B. Hall, an almost insurmountable task. D ean Hatcher is to be congratulated on a task well done in his f first year at Berry. | Mr. Hatcher attended Middle Tennessee State College and syeceived his B.S. in math from George Peabody College for Teachers. Mr. Hatcher has continued to attend Peabody while It oing his graduate work. | Before coming to Berry last summer, Mr. Hatcher held two ‘pther positions. He was Elementary School Principal in David- pon County, Tennessee for ten years. He later became Com- ,jnandant of Cadets at Columbia Military Academy in Colum- nia, Tennessee, remaining there for eighteen years. Betty Barbour, M.A. DEAN OF WOMEN Probably one of the best known and most widely respected women at Berry College is our Dean of Women, Miss Betty Barbour. Miss Barbour received her A.B. from the University of Georgia after attending Northwestern University and Western Michigan College. English and psychology were her majors. She then went to Florida State University to receive her M.A. In 1939 Miss Barbour first came to Berry as an instructor in English at the Girls’ High School then existing here. From 1942 until 1946 she served in the Berry College English De- partment. Miss Barbour then taught at Catawba College from 1947 until 1952. Since 1952 we have been fortunate in having Miss Barbour as our Dean of Women. The girls that have graduated from Berry College are the finest proof of Miss Barbour’s ability. Her leadership and “friendly persuasion” has been and remains a major guiding force at Berry.
