Martha Berry FOUNDER, THE BERRY SCHOOLS October 7, 1866— February 27, 1942 More than 16,000 students have now entered the Gate of Opportunity seeking higher education. Through Miss Berry’s undaunted determination to provide educational opportunities for those who ask, we, as a part of those 16,000 are given the opportunity that we seek. Truly Martha Berry deserved the honor which she received in 1931 of being named one of the 12 greatest American women. Since the death of Miss Berry in 1942 many changes have taken place because transitions are necessary to keep pace with our rapidly progressing world. Though she is no longer with us, the seeds she left continue to grow and produce in fertile soil. 13

IN MEMORIAM - - Memorial at North Whitfield High School, Dalton, Georgia EUGENE WADE Freshman 1960-61 (1942-1961) The tragic accident that took Eugene Wade’s life this past summer was a great loss to his family, friends, and all of the students at Berry College. We all remember Gene as one of Berry’s top young men while he was here during his freshman year. He was a leader in his class, and his friendly “Hi” was obviously a reason why. We also recall Gene’s fine sportsmanship and the many other qualities that gave proof of his Christian character.
