THE SHAMROCK TO THE TOP Berrien Springs High School One Sylvester Avenue Berrien Springs, Mi 49103 VOLUME 59 Ted Morris — Superintendant, Jeff Porter — President Betty Bennett — Vice President Sam Wright — Assistant Superintendant, Edwin Kerlikowske — Secretary, Arthur Adams — Treasurer MR. PAULSEN ASST. PRINCIPAL OATK. MEN AT D espite serious cutbacks this year, the maintenance department has maintained the look of the school and the grounds, only through hard work. Let's take a tour of the year. When you came into the high school this year, the lockers, halls, and main office area were painted to give a fresh new outlook for the faculty and students in the '87 school year. Also, one of the difficult projects that was finished during the fall, was keeping the football field painted and mowed. The football team went 11-0 for the season, so a big shamrock was put in the middle of the field for the last game. For as small of school as we have, it looks like the nicest in the area,” stated Joe Albring, Head of Grounds. Getting into basketball, during the winter, the custodians cleaned up the gym even when it got messy. At the Buchanan basketball game it looked like a hurricane hit the gym. Man, there was confetti, shaving cream, and TP' everywhere; what a mess,” said Scott Howe, a custodian on the night crew. Lighting is another concert of the maintenance staff. Activities in the spring included the changing of ballast and lightbulbs in the library to the installation of yellow security lights on the outside of the school. Even through all the cutbacks and all the hard work they still have fun in the “house of hats as John Schuster used to call it. The shop deserves this name as there are over 400 hats in the building. Maintenance consist of Steve Rumer, Joe Albring, Wayne Wet-kowski, and Jon Harner. At the bottom, Steve Rumer, is checking to see if all his fingers are still there. Above. Sue Cable is asking Santa Clause for a raise, little does she know that it is her boss. Left, Jon Harner and Steve Rumor are preparing to revamp a light. i The Berrien Springs bus drivers are some of the most needed people in the schools. They pick up kids in the morning and deliver them to school and then after school they pick them up and take them home. Bus driving is not one of the easiest jobs in the school. Morning through afternoon they listen to kids unwind. You did a good job listening to us and thanks. Driving a bus is very fun and 1 enjoy the kids ' states Doris Wiatrolik a six year veteran of the busing team. Front Row — Pat Liston, Gina Bowersox, Jeannie Downs, Sandy Swartz, Gert Solmes, Louise Zech, Gary Parks. COOKING AT THE TOP Back row Carol Schlutt, Maude Pagels, Mary Ann Davj Front row: Joyce Daniels, Janet Harris, Theresa Bunch Janet Harris washing dishes with a smile. About 7:30 a.m. women arrive at the' school and begin clanging around in the kitchen. These people are the cooks. They spend alot of time preparing food for the student body. After lunch is over they wash the dishes and clean up the lunchroom in preparation for the next meal. Through their efforts the students are able to obtain a well balanced and nutritional meal at lunch time. We would like to extend our vote of thanks to the cooks in appreciation for their hard work. The kitchen has alot of great improvements this year such as alacarte and potatoe bar , states Mrs. Carol Ireland. Arlene Skorupa gets mashed potatoes ready for lunch. A TOTAL EDUCATION FROM TOP Standing: Randy Smith, Lori Rennhack, Darcy Dixon, and Robert Frantz Seated: Evelyn Daniels, Cassie Carvalho, Betsy Koebel, Christine Strouts, Monique Comstock, Laurie Williams, and Melissa Johnson Some of the students that help keep our school running work in the office are the student helpers. These students spend one to two hours of their time day after day, picking up attendants slips, answering phones, taking and delivering messages and other designated tasks. If it wasn't for the student help I wouldn't be able to make it through the day. I depend on them to get some of the necessary tasks done, stated high school secretary Judy Maruk. 1 really enjoy working in the office, its really been good working experience, stated high school office helper Monique Comstock. Robert Frantz show us your pretty smile. TO BOTTOM The Berrien Springs adult education program is open to anyone who has not finished a high school education and is sixteen years of age or older. The wait is finally over for those diehard Shamrock football fans. This years team beat all the odds and successfully became the first team ever to be ranked 1 in the state!! What seemed like the impossible, in actuality, only took three weeks of play. The 1 slot had the Rocks name on it and those boys were determined to keep it there. The Shamrocks dominated their nine weeks of regular play by outscoring their opponents 330-41. They then entered their first play-off berth, ranked up on top. Their first game was found to be an easy 35-0 victory over Clinton on the Rocks home field. The victory then moved the gridiron stars to Hillsdale College to face the defending State Champs, Lansing Catholic Central. The pressure was immense but their hearts were stronger, as the Rocks won a hard fought 17-12 victory to become the 1986 Regional Champs! To set yet another first in Berrien history. It was now back to Hillsdale for the semi-final game against Detroit Country Day. Due to an ankle injury the previous week, Scott Jones was limited to defense only. An unexpected set back, but only slight. The Rocks saw their dream start to shatter as a frightening second quarter back injury to Scott White put him out of the game for good. Everyone gave it their all and never quit, but Country Day proved to be stronger as they won the game 24-11. It was a saddening experience yet a lot of praise came to this team. Jones and White received first team All-State honors while Shane Brewer was an honorable mention pick. Coach Duane Mac McLaughlin was also picked as Michigan's Class C Coach of the year. This group of men brought a lot of pride and happiness into this little town. Between the weeks festivities, assembly, game, and dance everyone was included in the excitement of the Homecoming tradition. The Berrien Springs Football team dodged a Ranger bullet by beating them 3-0 on a 22 yard field goal with 2:49 left in the game. During halftime of the defensive battle Ron Colvin and Darcy Dixon were crowned King and Queen. The senior float, On the track to Pontiac , received first honors. The assembly was equally exciting with traditional events such as the innertube race, pyramid contest, tug of war, musical chairs, and the unexpected pie in the eye festivity. 50 The senior Express is running at full steam. GRIDDERS GO 9 AND O The Berrien Springs Junior Varsity has followed the Varsity's footsteps to be the first team in Berrien history to go nine and zero. The Sophomore quarterback Alan Koch lead the offensive attack with his quick feet, and good ball control. Sophomore Linebacker Bob Lewis lead the Defense to its nine shut-downs to give the team its game winning edge. The Junior Varsity had two shutouts against Lakeshore, and Coloma, and outscored their opponents 187 to 75. Congratulations guys on an outstanding year. . vatdaRe f f All cross-country runners are to be admired 3t what they are doing. — Coach James Bowser f f CROSS COUNTRY Thanks to the Berrien Gold Boosters, an athletic financial support group, the Cross Country team had a season. Due to millage cutbacks the teams existance was threatened. The Boosters money brought the team back though, allowing for a three week season. The team suffered from their late start, which resulted in disappointing losses, but finished with a season of which to be proud. Although the season was disappointing, the Cross Country team put forth a tremendous effort. This effort will definitely pay off within the next few years. This years rebuilding season gave the young runners the experience they will need for the future. The gun fires, the crowd cheers, and our fearless cross country runners are off to the races. The cheer was obtained from a United States Cheerleader Association camp during the summer, at which both squads attended during two different weeks. It was at this camp that the Varsity Squad, with Kim Williams in place of Amy Bowser, earned their title of National Champions. This honor allowed the girls to compete at the Grand National Championships in Lansing. Even though they didn't win, the girls put on their best performance ever. It was this performance that sent the squad home with smiles on thier faces and a sense of accomplishment and pride, something they highly deserved, because they made it there all by themselves. The whole summer had gone by without a coach. Then about two weeks before the season was to begin, their new coach was announced. Donna Reagan, a reading lab teacher at the Middle School, would take over. For the first time in many years, the J.V. and Varsity worked together to bring the spirit back to Berrien Springs. Both of these groups combined, along with the additional J.V. Basketball Cheerleaders, to perform an outstanding dance routine at the homecoming assembly. The J.V. Cheerleaders also helped out that night and cheered with the Varsity at the homecoming game. As the season grew, so did their spirit. By the end of the season, the Cheerleader's enthusiasm had brought the fans to thier feet for most of the games. What's the time? It's time to get ill. This was one of our basketball teams most famous sayings for the 1986-87 season. It definitely was a year for our opponents to become ill. The Shamrocks had an excellent 20 and three season which was the best win loss record in 31 years. “We had a great season because we had a really terrific coach, his help was well appreciated, stated Chris Yates, a graduating senior. One of our teams biggest milestones this year was the conflict over our Greek exchange student Dimitris Bessilas. Our team was strong and handled all the negative comments well. The fan support was at an all time high. Berrien was favored by both the fans and the press to capture the district title. Unfortunately, the Shamrocks took a heartbreaking fall to our rival, River Valley. After two overtimes the Shamrocks took a loss 44 to 41. Departing from the team this year are seven great senior leaders including Captains Chris Yates, Tom Laskarides, and John Laskarides with Shane Brewer, Ed Olson, Dan Miller, and Dimitris Bessilas as members. This put a sudden halt to the teams dream of returning to the regional championship for another shot at the regional title. We had some terrific senior leadership this year and that is one of the reasons we were so successful, stated Shamrock coach John Reppart. Spirit was another one of the team's assets again this year and was often one of the reasons the girls took home a few of their wins this year. Being a member of the softball team is like being part of a second family, state Kate Schacknies a graduating senior. Most of the team members look to Reppart as a friend as well as a coach. The Berrien Springs Track Teams of course!!! The sense of humor gets them through practices (and bus rides) and the determination gets them the medals. And medals they did get!! Despite small teams, both the men and women gave some very strong performances. The long hard practices and running of the infamous hill near Rose Hill Cemetary finally paid off as Berrien came home with many all conference and conference champion people. Among these were conference champions: Mens 400 Relay with Scott Jones, Brian Robinson, Scott White, and Jose Mundo. Mens 800 Relay with Corey Erickson, Robinson, White, and Dimitris Bes-silas. White was also all-conference in the long jump and 200 meter dash. Bessilas, all conference in the 400 meter dash and Robinson was in the 100 meter dash. The womens relay team in the 400 was also all-conference. Laurie Williams, Heather Layman, Jennifer Rudlaff, and Trina Wofford brought home the honors. THE RUN Will Trina be able to pull off another win? Winning all-conference honors by placing 2nd were Trina Wofford in the 100 meter dash and long jump, Dimitris Bessilas in the high jump, and Jose Mundo in the 100 meter dash. The excellence continued as many individuals came home as Regional Champions. Once again the Mens 400 Relay (Dimitris Bessilas in place of Jose Mundo) and 800 Relay teams were 1st as well as White in the long jump, Rob in the 100 and the Womens 400 Relay. Bessilas was also eligible for state competition in the open 400 meter dash by running a qualifying time. State competition went well as the girls placed 11th, the boys 800 Relay: 7th, Boys 400: 5th, and Bessilas 6th in the 400 meter dash. The biggest place of the day was White's school record breaking long jump of 22'6% . This gave him a 3rd place finish and All-State Honors. The band director Mr. Gerald Reed said, Playing in the band is a big part of the academic education of the students. It provides them an outlet for the music and also experience in participating in group activities. A sense of discipline of working in a group is also developed, and the students learn a lot from it. Reed also adds that the most important thing that the band students achieve by playing in the band is experiencing being in a group of people working towards a common goal, which is quality and performance. The students in band also seem to agree with Mr. Reed about band experience; If you like music, it's a very good experience says junior flute player, Tanya Chavez. It all started on the East side of the state with competitions between high schools. Now most states hold a Science Olympiad each year. Three years ago, when the Science Olympiad was initiated in this area, our high school started participating in it. The Science Olympiad covers all science disciplines. It is not just for the talented and gifted. The games differ, and they need students that have varied abilities and are interested, said Hutenstein. Last year at regionals, Berrien Springs placed third out of 13 high schools and at state competition they placed 33rd out of 42 high schools. This year at the regional match they placed third out of 19 high schools. In two of the three years, the team has made it to state competition. In three years, under the direction of the teachers in the science department, the Science Olympiad team members have accomplished and learned a lot. The Science Olymiad events include: Bridge Building — a project involving each participant to design the lightest bridge to with stand the weight of a brick. Orienteering — students are given a course in compass headings and distances to be followed using their pace to measure distance and their own compasses for directions. Periodic Table Quiz — an oral quiz of elements Rocks Fossils — students attempt to identify, describe, and classify various rock and mineral specimens and certain fossils. Academic Challenge gives students a chance for interscholastic competition on academic subjects. It is where knowledge and quick recall pay off, said sponsor Betty Taiclet. Academic Challenge, also known as Quiz Bowl, is where schools in a four county area compete against each other. There are 18 teams which make up the white and blue divisions in competition. During season play Berrien won each of their three matches qualifing for the blue division championship final against Hartford, in which the Berrien team won. By winning they qualified for the grand championship against Coloma. Once again the quick witted Berrien team won and qualified for yet another round of play. During the week of June 14 at Ohio State University the Berrien Springs Quiz Bowl team will compete at the National Academic Challenge Cha-mionship. We plan to do better than last year, because we are more rienced and we have a team said Taiclet in hopes winning the National title. Lori Zahrn tells the details of the trap to Kate Schacknies and Brian Bruce. The play has always been a very important part of the activities in the High School , says Sam Wright, principal. This year's Thespian Troupe and Drama Club really gave their best to put on the play 'The Ransom Of The Red Chief” in the High School. I feel that the play gives a lot more to the kids than they realize. It is an outlet to express themselves, and to show their talents. It gives them a chance to be exposed to the theater, and if the production goes well it is a great accomplishment,” said Kay Lane, sponsor of the Thespian Troupe and Drama Club. The thespians agree with Lane Being a thespian and making a play requires a lot of time and energy. But for us every effort and minute is worth it because it's also fun, and it gives us a chance to get closer to other people, said thespians spokes person Cassie Carvalho. The Thespian Troupe worked hard this year and they had a very good year. We all teamed up like a family unit. As a family we accomplished much in a short period of time such as set construction and memorizing lines. That is how we get a good play and a good year.”, says senior thespian Brian Bruce. Lane ends by adding that the most immportant thing in doing a play involves the strong senior leadership and experience. Without it, it would be impossible to do anything. Leadership comes from experience and experience comes from earning that leadership from performing in past plays. The more experience the better leadership. The senior give examples in acting and behavior on and behind the stage. says Bruce. And what we get in return is the community's appreciation and encouragement concludes Lane. A balcony view of a wonderful prom! Debbie and Tim take time out to pose for the camera. Watch out girls, Don and Chris have suspicious grins on their faces! Best looking couple: Chenoa Dimitris. A car pulls up and the doorbell rings, Johnny's here! my mother sings. At the top of the stairs I stand with such grace, and on the way down I fall on my face. It's time to pin on his boutonniere, I poke him in the chest and out comes a tear. We stand in one place for quite a long while, and mom takes pictures, all with fake smiles. We eat our dinner at a very elegant place, And Johnny eats his food like he's in some kind of race! Finally we re off to the Ski World Chalet, But it starts to rain, to my dismay. We get inside and we're soaked to the bone, My hair is ruined! I start to moan. The place looks so gorgeous, all silver and pink. But all that perfume makes it really stink! I spill my punch, oh what a mess. What once was white, is now a polka-dot dress. Out on the dance floor I can feel the heat. But things cool off when I step on his feet. Ron and Lori are the King and Queen of Prom '87, It couldn't be more perfect, it's a match made in heaven. Here is one award you don't want to miss, The best looking couple is Chenoa and Dimitris. The D.J. Stylus starts up the music once more, And more people are dancing than ever before. But time passes quickly and soon it's time to go, And the last dance is played real nice and slow. In learning, we have shared, In sharing, we have found friendship. In friendship, we have found ourselves. On Sunday, May 31, 1987 the senior class of Berrien Springs High School graduated. The occasion was a very emotional one. The excitement and desire to hurry it up was overwhelming. And there was also a sadness because as soon as it was over, it meant that there were people we never would see again. People we have grown up with, learned from, and spent fun times with. Each of us would be split apart leaving everyone to go his own separate way and pursue his dreams. The memories of our high school years will always be ours to share. Whether we are together or apart, the class of 1987 will always have special memories to share. I would like to tell the class of '87 that I am proud to be a part of this class and would like to wish all of you the best always in all of your endeavors. Also, I would like to tell the remaining students to do your best and enjoy your high school years as they only come once.
