The Berrien Springs Varsity football team continued its winning tradition this season by going 8-1. The only loss being to Dowagiac. This loss is what kept this year's team from making the state playoffs competition. This season did, however, end on a happy note with a complete rout over Buchanan. Also accomplished this year, was the third consecutive Lakeland Conference title for the Rocks. Coach Duane McLaughlin once again did an excellent job, with the much appreciated help of assistant coaches Gary Kurek, Tim Sunday and John Laskarides. LAKELAND CHAMPS AGAIN!!! This is the first year in a very long time that Berrien Springs High School has published a true newspaper. We as a class had much to learn concerning the art of publishing and it became a learning experience in which we all grew together. Nexus published nine issues throughout the year with the paper becoming a true student forum dealing with controversial issues such as the English program and drug abuse. This is the Cinderella story for the 1984-85 academic year. This year the newspaper class was combined with the yearbook class. Next year the two classes will be separated so as they may concentrate on only that class and not both. It has been a hard year for many, one of change for others, but we made it through the rough times of meeting a deadline for the newspaper and a deadline for the yearbook on the same day and its made us all better people. We wish everyone the best of luck in the future in Berrien Springs High School and in life. Sincerely, Beth A. Fraternity Forever This was the fourth year for Berrien Springs and other high schools in the county to participate in the Close-Up program in the nations capitol. Close-Up is really a race between exhaustion and the energies of a typical high school student, but usually the student wins by a single breath at the South Bend Regional Airport as he she stumbles off of the concluding flight. Close-Up is a six day marathon of workshops, seminars, tours and friendship that usually involves about 140-150 students at one particular hotel, with five hotels being used at one time. The program begins in November, and ends in May with about 15,000 students attending per year. Although students raise the bulk of their funds, local monies and financial support are available. Next year, an additional fundraising exercise will be added. The stress of fundraising and of waiting for the May departure is overwhelmed by the emotional and educational experience while attending. Close-Up is a lifetime experience, the fraternity of going to Washington and meeting students from all over the nation is forever. C.U.D.C. It was on this day in 1985 that our life of dependency and insecurity had taken a giant step forward towards the independency and self guidance that so often comes with adult life. A drastic change had to be made in our behavior because now we were adults . And the coming of adulthood was none too soon. The happiness on this occasion was overwhelming. We were to be turned loose into the world to make our.own way. The excitement of this prospect only made us want to hurry the process. But then, as the day died down, we thought of all those familiar faces. The ones we grew up with and knew so well. Now, after all these years, we would split apart and go our own separate ways. Some would keep in touch, some would not. Some would get married and some would play the dating game. But in all our individualism there would still be something that we could all share. The memories of our school years and all the people we loved and cared for. There will never be another time in our life like that time. Never let them be forgotten. Keep them in your thoughts and when times get rough remember those high school days, the best days of our lives. C D Opp. Page — A) Tony Krause in all his glory.
