BERRIEN SPRINGS HIGH SCHOOL ONE SYLVESTER AVE. BERRIEN SPRINGS, MICHIGAN Volume 57 NOW IS THE TIME TO . . . LAUGH PEOPLE FACULTY WORK SENIORS REMEMBER UNDERCLASSMEN THINK SPORTS PLAY ACTIVITIES TRY ADS GIVE CLOSING LOVE 2 NOW IS THE TIME In the hustle and bustle of the world today, no one ever has time for themselves. Everywhere you turn you hear. I can't. I don’t ha ve the time.” or there are too many things to do and too little time. It seems that people have forgotten to slow down and MAKE time to do those things we don't have time for now. This terrible syndrome is present and thriving in our very own school. If you look around, you will undoubtedly notice that everything seems to be in fast-forward. Even more so. look at yourself — yes even you. It is because of this that the theme of this year’s book is — NOW IS THE TIME. Hopefully we have created a book which will bring freedom from this driving force by showing you how good it can feel to just slow down and take some time for yourself — NOW!!! Some may say that this does not apply to them, but it does. It seems that everyone is in such a hurry to graduate but beware! I'm sure some seniors can tell you to slow down, or else the best years of your life might just pass you by. Sincerely. But the memories that were left to us will last throughout our lifetimes. In the past 12 years, we have formed our opinions, our values, and our characters. We have grown to love and hate each other, to accept each other, and as we grew older, to respect one another. Through these struggles we have stayed together, crossing each bridge as we reached it. praising our successes and encouraging our failures. Finally coming to the end — which is really our beginning. It's been an honor to be your president. I wish you all the best of luck in the rest of your life. Sincerely. I-S3. About seventy students were involved in the program. The program gave both high schools the opportunity to expand the number of courses offered by each high school. Classes that are not available at one high school could be taken at the other high school. The primary areas of sharing were foreign language (Latin. Spanish. French and German), social studies (Sociology. Psychology, Minority History and Economics), computers, vocational classes (Cabinetmaking and Vocational Machine Shop), and retailing. The students involved took three classes at their high school and three classes at the cooperating High School. The exchange program gave the students of Buchanan and Berrien Springs an opportunity for greater interaction; socially and academically. Most people involved in the program were positive about the concept. Currently the exchange is planned to continue. A) Jeri Payne is on top of the world! Success eluded our seventh grade football team as our record of 0 and 9 dearly showed. Basketball was definitely our sport, we were awesome. The eighth grade was a year of more concrete success. Computers were purchased from fundsraising and are still in use today for students following us. The only Thorn for most of us appeared in history class. It was a Silverthorn. Ninth grade, on the bottom again with only one way to go. up! We dreaded the four years it would take to become top-dog once more. The Sophomore girls and their dedication to excell in all sports has been a credit to our class. Not to be outdone. J. V. football boasted an impressive 7 and 2 record. Freshman, the underclassmen of the high school, all one hundred fifty of us. Things looked good for Jeannene Keiler as she won the spelling bee contest every year while in third, fourth, and fifth grade. Our favorite year in elementary was fifth grade, we established the true meaning of puppy love being the First grade ever to have a dance. It was held in the gym and was entertained by Ms. Taiclets class. Also her class took first place in softball as Taiclets Tornadoes. As sixth grade rolled around we were all worried about walking down the halls of the middle school, until Mrs. Lee began sixth grade Teen-nights. Finally we achieved our goal to become eighth-graders. The beginning of this year was almost totalled as we lost our 'chicken bone’ for three months. She moved to go to Lakeshore. Glad that you’re back! Rut our Marriot’s trip made up for it. We all had a blast and the weather was bright and sunny for once. The funniest part of all was when on the way home. Ed Kerlikowski fell asleep and we tied his shoe strings together — he most definetley had a nice trip! Our play was Dr. Dolittle. which turned out good except for the most important person. Vicki Lehocky. Even though you didn't receive your certificate, we all give our thanks for being student director. Later during the year. Claudia FLayes won first place in an essay contest which was on the subject of Sharing and Justice. Now once again we are at the bottom of the list as little freshman. But we are having a blast as we try getting a piece of the action walking through the halls of Berrien Springs FUgh. Melissa Johnson Officers: Laurie Williams — Secretary. BALLGETTERS As Coach Kimball's assistant, I would like to congratulate the 1983-84 Freshman basketball team on an outstanding 16-3 season. They were, in many ways, superior to their opponents. The Freshman players progressed very well over the course of the season from an individually oriented self-concept to a cohesive, powerful team concept. SCHOLARSHIP, LEADERSHIP Only someone possessing the qualities of scholarship, leadership, character and service is eligible to become a member of the National Honor Society. The students who are eligible to become members are considered the leaders of not only the school, but of tomorrow, also. The 1983-84 National Honor Society members proved worthy of their titles through their actions this past year. One event in which they participated was the 1984 Winter Special Olympics. Each member received either a special child to take care of or a position at a station. The day was filled with love and caring. It also opened many eyes to the realities of the handicapped. The Banquet, which is put on every year, was a smashing success. From the Invocation to the Benediction, the air was full of mystery. The theme was The Clues to N.H.S.” and the play was wonderful! During the 1983 football season, the marching Shamrocks really inspired their team to victory with their well put together routines and musical selections. In October, they went to Dickenson Stadium in St. Joseph to show the rest of Southwestern country what they were made of. Receiving a Division II rating our band made us proud. Led by two Sophomores. Dale Tropp and Matt Lehmann, their marching season ended with a bang. Next, came the concert season and a new director. Scott Knitter. It was time to get off their legs and down to work, work, work! They started with their Christmas concert and ended with a big turn out at the annual Dairy Queen Social. 101 EL CLUB ESPANOL The Spanish Club has been very successful this year. We have planned various activities. Our hayride proved to be be a lot of fun. Appetites were satisfied by delicious Mexican dishes served at ChiChi's in South Bend. Before Christmas break, we invited the faculty to enjoy punch and cookies and a try at breaking the traditional pinata. Mr. Phillips finally succeeded in giving the decisive swing after Mrs. Tai-clet. Mr. Kimball, and Mr. Archer all prepared the way for him. In March, the Spanish Club will be celebrating Foreign Language Week. This week will be devoted to stressing the importance of learning a second language in our multilingual world. The Club members have made this year very prosperous and exciting. Their participation is much needed and appreciated. Front Row: Dan Scheffler. Andy Ziemke. Second Row: Miss Jill McConnell. I asked myself an important question: How was I going to bring twelve people, anywhere from athletes to scholars, together to create the best yearbook this school has ever seen ? Well. think found the answer. When the pressure and sweat of a nearing deadline approached, the absence of just one staff member was felt by all. The staff this year found a way to overcome this by showing their true spirit. When a predicament of this sort appeared, those farther along grouped together to help out the missing staff member. I feel this, along with the terrific guidance of our advisor. Mr. Jack Baker, greatly aided in the fantastic turn out of the book. This year Josten 's Yearbook Company was introduced to us by Mr. Mike Rowe along with new ideas and formats for the book. Mike was extremely helpful in his efforts with our book and his work was greatly appreciated. Thank you. Mike. A second question I asked myself before work began was this: What exactly is a yearbook ? A little soul searching helped me find the answers I was looking for. A yearbook is a lasting record of the history made in a certain year in time. Its sole purpose is to capture the moments many have shared in this time and preserve them forever. Moments which could and very well should last a lifetime. As you look through this yearbook, take some time to really feel the memories. I hope that in years to come, when you look back on your wonderful years of high school, you 'll enjoy looking through these pages as much as we enjoyed putting them together for you!! Good luck to you all in the future! Sincerely. Dionne M. Lulko Editor 1984 Shamrock YEARBOOK STAFF: Beth Turnipseed (Business Manager). Carol Sunday. Kip Bowser (Technical Advisor). F 107 ALWAYS AND FOREVER The Family Living class held its annual mock wedding on December 7th in the high school cafeteria under the direction of Mrs. Phelps. The purpose of this project was to experience the planning and preparation of a successful wedding. The Firebird was painted a pearl metal flake and the Camaro was finished with a silver metal flake and two tone blue II Top eliminator stripes on both sides. Both cars are now in excellent shape from the good work. Three things important to success in this class is time, effort, and a lot of patience. We continued to show great movies as well as hold the annual event of the paper airplane contest. Being that we love to get dirty, we decided to wash cars for fun and profit. We have developed new and confusing methods for creating paper work for the club. We even participated in National Engineering Week so we could study all the angles. We have had many new ideas and theories this year that made this a fun time for all of us. Is there life in outer spaceT” ALL THE RIGHT STUFF!!! The 1984 Mr. Shamrock Contest was held on March 15th. The Top Five consisted of Dana Dixon, Greg Colvin, Mike Campbell, Will Koch and Chris Kacsits. Then, the final moment came, Mike Gordon, Mr. Shamrock 1983, crowned his successor. It provides a foundation — a beginning — for all of adult life. Graduation is simply the end of a beginning. Each year, be bestow our diploma on several scores of young adults. We do so in order to provide each of them with a symbol of our belief that they have mastered the subjects we believe are essential to their future well being. Your diploma means that you have earned the right to go forth with honor and to continue building upon the foundation you have started heret and continue you must if you wish to enjoy a satisfying, happy and profitable lifetime in today’s highly competitive world. To view your diploma as an end of formal and informal learning is to invite early disaster into your life. In Berrien Springs, we trust that your school experiences have been both profitable and pleasant. We trust that you leave us with a solid base of knowledges that you have developed a series of skills in the use of machines and tools: and. above all. that you have come to appreciate the values of your American heritage — values which are absolutely necessary if we are to live together in harmony and to prosper. Of these three, values are the most important for they last a lifetime — and beyond. Knowledge and skills must be daily altered. For each of us. our values reflect what we are: our knowledge and skills give evidence of what we know and can do. Schools are very complex organizations because the people who attend and work in them are. themselves, very complex. The school must adjust to the people it serves just as these people must adjust to the school. This process, you will find, is repeated over and over again from the family to the nation itself. With out adjustment, based upon respect, civilized life is not possible. We are extremely proud of you and we hope you are equally proud of your accomplishments as a Shamrock. Very likely, you have received in proportion to what you have given: And that too is one of life’s lessons. We usually get out of something what we put into it. As you go forth, we wish you Godspeed We can ask for nothing more. Dr. Jon Schuster Superintendent of Schools 123 A) Pastor Maynard Schoen delivers an inspirational Baccalaureate sermon. But a commitment—a commitment about money. Andrews University will do whatever it takes to give you an opportunity for a Christian education. We give you the chance. You make the choice. It's called the Stretch Concept. It simply means that if you do everything you can to make ends meet for college, Andrews will do the rest. You must apply for all the loans and grants available and work to your potential. Your parents must stretch to help you, if they can help at all. Then Andrews will make up any difference. ANY DIFFERENCE. $500, $1,000, $2,000—sometimes as much as $3,000. You reach as far as you can and Andrews will pull you the rest of the way. A. . With the Stretch Concept at Andrews you can’t honestly say that a lack of money kept you out of an Adventist college. A Because Andrews does whateverittakes. Sound too good to be true? Put us to the test —toll-free. We’re ready and waiting to stretch for you. y Call us on the In-Line In Michigan: 1-800-632-2248 Outside Michigan: 1-800-253-2874 Andrews University 132 Congratulations Class Of 1984! i i % r) ir xTHowaii Onfd fV FLOWERS • GIFTS WHETSTONE’S w 1124 N 5TH STREET NILES, MICHIGAN 49120 GARAGE 616-683 5454 Phil Hurlbutt George Donneker ROGER KESTERKE INSURANCE AGENCY Life • Auto • Home • Farm • Business Honesty is our “BEST POLICY” 106 South Main Street Telephone (616)471-7350 Berrien Springs, Ml 49103 IDCE L KRAMER AUTO PART heritage bank BIXBY ORCHARDS Congratulations To Class Of 1984!!
