Text from Pages 1 - 152 of the 1983 volume:

• 4 | “Caring for Your Student Body” The student body of a school is a very important part of its makeup. Without one, no school could possibly exist. A student body consists not only of one person but of every student in the school. The term “student body” is used solely to unite everyone in a common unit. Caring takes an immense amount of patience, kindness, and effort. Caring for someone or something is to guide them along and help them over the “rough” spots. This is what the Administration and Faculty do for our student body. They guide us through our schooling years and prepare us for life on our own. This is why the theme “Caring for Your Student Body” was chosen. We hope that in the future you can look back on this yearbook and remember how much care and help each one of us has received through these great years of high school. Hopefully, no one will ever forget! Sincerely, The Yearbook Staff r ( TZ' S CQsrr. And we can quote a famous teacher of tfc Vi VI- ,t.rw ... v |1V„ as Mr PKrtKtvi iki ¥- Our Senior year will be hard to forget as well as years past. Which brings us to our 6th grade in the new Middle School when every day we would take the undescribably new smell home with us. Our favorite thing in Mrs. Zimmerman’s class was to drive her nuts by leaning our chairs back and making our obnoxious noises. 7th grade came as well as many other new things such as our first dance, our skating parties in which we learned what the back seat of the bus was all about. And most of all the accident of Steve Crouch which is still carried in our memories. 8th grade came and we were at the top of the Middle School, walking proud and raising chaos, we all have our special little memories of Mrs. Koontz. it's hard to forget her just as it is hard to forget when Mike 8osweil. Doug Shelton and Keith Keigley sprayed fire extinguishers over the gyrjri; floor. And to this day we are still looking forward to the unsealing of our Time Capsule that we sealed. Next came our- Freshmen y qrc ifrz fop fd bottom ih :3 Short months. Our float -Wtlke- Well we had fun anyhow. Our 10th grade year came on with a splash, as bowls of chili beans flew through the air, along with other delicacies. And we also remember all the fender benders which as result took 5 points off of one of our fellow classmate's license. And of course we can’t forget Kim Harrison pulling the turning signal out of the Drivers Ed car leaving Kim Bolton in a wild frenzy of laughter in the back seat. 1 1th grade seemed to bring us more luck. We won our float contest with the theme Drag on to Victory. Otherwise we were fairly quiet, just fairly, till the class of 82’s class night, which was a night to remember for us juniors — we got even 11 That brings us to our Senior year, we can thank the juniors for painting our Senior parking lot. When the juniors were in the 5th grade, they had some exciting softball tournaments; in the final outcome ‘ House’s Superstars” led the packs with the most winning games; “Sil’s Sweathogs” came in second; “Taiclet’s Tigers” came in third, and “Scheffer’s Smileys” came in fourth. Then the Juniors moved up in the world to tackle sixth grade! Social activities that year and the following two years included skating parties and dances. A snow sculpturing contest in the seventh grade high lighted the year, and the boys’ basketball team never lost a game out of the twenty-four played. Then came the final year in the Middle School — 8th grade. When this class went to Marriots, it rained, and rained . . . and rained. A farewell dance was held at the end of the year to celebrate their leaving the Middle School. The next year was living the high-life of a Freshman, down at the bottom again. Even their float came in last. As Sophomores, they were one step higher on the ladder, and their float came in third! And the moment remembered best in the class history was Arnold Eichberg running into the wall during the wagon race at the homecoming assembly in 1981. And finally, they were Juniors! The float came in third; magazine sales were fair; and the Juniors spent about $2,000 on the Prom, which is the Juniors' farewell to the Seniors. Looking back, we remember fourth grade where cupid first struck Kevin Bartz and Amy Plangger. who broke the separation of the boys and the girls. They went steady with a theme song of ' Do You Wanna Make Love? All through Sylvester we had to put up with Joe Ludwig's famous eruptions (burps) and the smell of his locker. In the sixth grade, we were the first to start out with the new English program. We also won the snow sculpture contest with our version of Magilla Gorilla. How could we forget Cary Hensley, who was always fighting, or our sixth grade famous food fights? Our eighth grade year was ' The Year of Records. Starting off with the football team having an undefeated season. Also Scott McMillen, Tony Krause. Mike Clancy. Tim Ambs. and Joe Ludwig in their singing group, known as The Great Pantomines. It was the year we bought computers. Our eighth grade play was Winnie The Pooh. where Don Ferguson stole the show. Also, we can't forget the eighth grade trip to Marriotts. Unfortunately. Mike Clancy couldn't go. Our freshman year started out great when we came over without our donation from the middle school. The first nine weeks were full of excitement, because of the industrial arts classes. Rocket Contest. which went off with a blast. According to our favorite teacher. Mr. Huttenstine, we were close knit and highly sociable, which made us his favorite class. The year was not without problems, such as when the freshmen basketball team was suspended because some team members partook in the consumption of alcoholic beverages. Mow. the sophomore year, the year we went beyond the juniors and came in second in the float contest. It was the year Kip Bowser became the first sophomore to be on the yearbook staff. Remember Sherry Borchert’s accident? Class of 85 was a class of dreamers, achievers, laughter, and tears. What we will all remember about the year of 1983 was that it was a year of sophomore pride. Things began to happen in first grade when Polly French won the title of Little Miss Firecracker. First runner up was DeAnn Adams, and second runner up was Valerie Clark. Then, onto fifth grade when Shane Lewis won second place in the State of Michigan’s Art Contest about the prevention of Vandalism. It seemed their favorite year was the year that they were in seventh grade when many things happened. The boys' and girls' basketball teams played the teachers, and they were the first teams to finally beat the faculty. Later, the class of '86 paid for the purchase of computers for the Middle School. In seventh grade, Stacy Stephens received the most improved, and Kerri Petzke the most valuable players' awards in volleyball. In the eighth grade, the class had a rainy day at Mar-riotts. Tom Armour broke several records while competing in lifting weights. Shlonda Burton and Kerri Petzke won the principals’ awards that same year. The freshman class, under the presidency of Jake Dowell, this year is having a great time trying to show their coolness while walking down the halls of Berrien Springs High School. The Head A. Instructs or directs the functions of the Body. 1. Board of Education 2. Faculty and Staff As the head governs the body, so does the Board of Education, faculty, and staff govern the school. As the head is af fected by its uncontrolled emotions, so do the emotions of the students affect the administration. Without the head, the body could not function, and without the administration, the school could not function. The mind expands and broadens the actions of the body as does the administration encourages growth and expansion of the school system. As the head contains the knowledge to do that which is right for the body, so does the administration keep current with the latest knowledge needed to keep the school corporation operating. The body, or students, should follow the instructions of the head, or administration and faculty. There can be no body without the head, so there cannot be a head without a body. In other words, students need the administration, and the administration needs the students. With cooperation of the whole body, Berrien Springs Public School will always be at the top of the list. 49 Board of Education Elizabeth Bennett Edwin Kerlikowske Paul Bixby Jeff Porter 50 Doris Walton Richard Shunkwiler Ronald Willit Dr. John Schuster Michigan State B.A., M.A. PHD Superintendent of Schools Dr. Robert Fein Western Michigan University PHD Assistant Superintendent of Schools Dr. Wayne Wright Andrews University E.D.D. In October, they went to St. Joseph’s Dickenson Stadium and participated in the 6th District Marching Band Festival; at that they received a 2nd division rating. Drum Majors Jannette Szucs and Felicia Fredrick really suprised the audience when they did a quick change into their “Pink Pantherette” outfits and danced to the catchy Pink Panther tune. Then the Seniors got their turn at picking music and making up routines for their final Senior Show. It was a great performance to end a terrific season. Next came the Concert band season; a time for their legs to have a rest. They started with their Christmas concert and ended with their big turnout at the annual Ice-cream Social. The concert season was also a great time. G H I 63 German Club Spanish Club The GeYman Club, sponsored by Mr. Victor King, had a gre year, with officers: Karen Doepker — president, Lisa Granlund -vice-president, Lisa Fishburn — secretary, and Kelli Eshleman -treasurer, and 42 other members. The members held initiatior and celebrated their Weihnachisfest in October. The members sold German Advent Calendars and Gumr Baren during November and December to raise money for a tr to the German section of Chicago. They visited Chicago on April 13th and had the opportunity shop in German stores, where only German was spoken. Also, eat in a German restaurant, and to have coffee and pastries in Konditorei. The Spanish Club had a very enjoyable year under the directic of Jessica Zahrn — president, Michele Ameling — vice-presider Stephanie Juister — secretary, Kim Riley — treasurer, and Mi Jill McConnell — sponsor. Two of the activities that were ve popular with the members were the hayride and the trip to Lah cienda in South Bend. A money-making activity was the selling spices by the eighteen members. They were involved in various ac tivities which helped them to improve their acting abilities. The Thespian officers were Diana Farwell. President; Dan Lantz. Vice-President; Cheryl Guettler. Secretary; and Jessica Zahrn, Treasurer. The members included Denise Burns. Felicia Fredricks. Sheryl Hildebrand, Melodie Marske. Rhonda Rutz, and Bobbie Jo Sommers. The Thespians sponsored a Drama Day trip, which included the Drama Club members, on October 16. The members of both clubs went to Western Michigan University to participate in work shops and saw a special presentation of the Merry Wives of Windsor by Shakespeare. They spent most of the day in workshops dealing with makeup, costumes, acting, lighting, and voice. They enjoyed the play and were given a chance to ask the actors and actresses questions about acting. It was a day well spent. On February 18, the Thespians sponsored another trip, also including the Drama Club members. The members of both clubs attended Lakeshore High School to see a touring group from Western Michigan University. This trip was taken because of intense interests on the part of the members of both clubs, and it proved to be a learning experience for students in the area of on stage chorus involvement. In December, the Drama Club presented two plays entitled. 'Best Christmas Pageant Ever and The Littlest Angel that Was Always Late. The Drama Club's officers were Debora Hall. President; Stephanie Juister. Vice-President; Julie Harner, Secretary; and Cindy Nye, Treasurer. Members of the Drama Club included Michelle Kacsits. Monica Herman, John Farwell. Matt Lehmann. Tod McMillen. Danielle Hall. Kim Hildebrand, Andy Ziemke, Mary Moore. Polly French. Brian Gill, Sheri Maruk, John Ralston, Lynn Lucas. Duane Hildebrand. Darice Lulko, Laura LoRocco, Scott McLauchlin, Sheryl Rygg, Maria Olivares. Joe Zahrn, and Eric Stuckey. In March, the Thespian and Drama Club members presented the musical, The Music Man by Meredith Willson. It was an outstanding performance and everyone involved had a great time. The Drama Club was open for any student to join. After becoming a member, the students earned points by assisting with the spring production. The Thespian members decided by voting the number of points each student earned. For example, a major role was worth six to eight points, a minor role was worth three to five, and a walk-on was worth one point. Chairmen of committees earned three to five points. A student who had ten points and had been in two or more productions was eligible to become a Thespian member. New members who were inducted into the troupe were Cindy Nye, Julie Harner, Kim Hildebrand. Andy Ziemke. Stephanie Juister. Mary Moore, Brian Gill. John Ralston, Darice Lulko, and Debora Hall. A new policy gave seniors the title of Honorary Thespian if they had ten points but had only been in one production. This entitled them to all benefits of being a Thespian except that of voting. The new Honorary members were Andy Bauer and Ron Knuth. 1 Front Row: Felicia Fredrick. Sheryl Hildebrand. Second Row: Rhonda Rutz. Bobbi Jo Sommers. Denise Burns. Third Row: Jessica Zahrn. I never really realized how much work goes into publishing a simple 144 page book of memories. Every member of the staff was vital — from Technical Advisor to Copy Editor to Photographer — if any one staff member was absent, we all felt it. The 1983 Shamrock differs from yearbooks of the past years in more than just staff. Taylor Publishing Company was introduced to us by Bob Weir, along with new techniques in book layout. This was also the first year the Editor was prechosen — just as we chose next year’s Editor: Dionne Lulko. In spite of all the extra hours and late deadlines, I would not go back on my decision to be Editor of this yearbook. Through this class, I have come to realize how important every student is to the welfare of the entire student body, and that without the faculty and Administration that the Berrien Springs High School had, a book of this caliber would not be possible. I hope you have enjoyed reading it as much as we enjoyed putting it together. H Jessica Zahrn Editor 1983 Shamrock G A. ) Lisha answers, Now Jessica, this is the way it has got to be! The club, in order to raise funds, was involved with bake sales, a dance, and the showing of several movies. These funds were used to sponsor a balloon race which was held in April. Academic Challenge, a subject-matter competition between the sixteen high schools in Berrien County was broadcast live from Orchards Mall by radio station WHFB. Two rounds of competition were played, and the winner of the first round played the winner of the second round. The first round was lost to Eau Claire, and the second round was lost to Buchanan. The Council remained a student-service coordination agency that focused upon the welfare of the student body. The Student Council has been responsible for the coordination of all of the Homecoming activities and the student fund raising activities. It also promoted a blood drive for the Red Cross on April 29th which was very successful. The Council has sponsored the spring blood drive for several years. In addition, the Student Council conducted the class elections. The scholarships, which are raised by donut sales and bake sales by the Council members, were given to the most rewarding and deserving graduates and class of '83. The Council also examined issues and problems that involved the student body. One of the many issues the Student Council faced was the lack of food for the second lunch students. The Council did a survey to find the students' responses. Also the Council donated $800 to the Close-Clp students to help with their expenses on their trip to Washington, D.C. Another $100 was given to Sherry Borchart. The Student Council's final responsibility was to the other Student Councils in the Lakeland Conference. The Council hosted, and sent representatives to other schools and shared methods and systems of student government. The sponsor of the Berrien Springs Student Council was Tom Phillips who has sponsored this organization for sixteen years. The 1982-83 Council President was Miss Dawn Schultz. At Christmas they shopped for three complete turkey dinners and delivered the Christmas baskets to three needy families. They also took the title of “Kringle’s Carriers” and delivered Christmas greeting-grams. In the Spring, they planned the Scholarship Achievement Banquet for 325 parents and semester honor roll students. During the banquet many honors were awarded. Each year for the past five years, Berrien Springs High School has won the traveling trophy for having the highest percentage of eligible students giving blood from all Berrien County Schools. Unfortunately this year we lost to Michigan Lutheran. Since the drive began six years . ago, a total of 686 pints of blood have been collected from our students and staff. Just for the record, out of the 162 registered donors, 117 qualified to give blood. That’s an outstanding 116% of the school’s goal. The Shamrocks finished the season with an 8 and 1 record while gaining their first Lakeland Blue Conference championship. In addition, the Shamrocks placed 5th in their region in final state playoff points. A heartbreaking 40 to 38 loss to Coloma kept the Berrien squad out of the playoffs. The Shamrocks featured a very explosive offense this season as they averaged 330 yards a game in total offense, while scoring 28 points per game. Leading the Shamrocks to their finest season in 25 years were fullback Kevin Hickman and Quarterback Mike Campbell who both made All State, along with tailback Will Koch who was honorable mention. Also having outstanding seasons and being named to the all conference squad were John Leath, Jim Lehocky, John Szucs, Arnold Eichberg, Mike Whetstone and Mike Boswell. The day for which everyone had anxiously waited, Friday, finally arrived. This was green and white day, and the day of the assembly. The excitement rose as the girls beat the guys in the annual pyramid contest, while the senior guys beat the junior guys in the so called flat inner tube race. This excitement kept building, as the students piled into their class floats behind the fire truck, which was carrying our beloved football players. The varsity and junior varsity cheerleaders had a bake sale and car wash to earn money to go to cheerleading camp, which was held in Muncie, Indiana. While they were there, they won several awards. The JV won four ribbons, and the varsity won three. This was also the first year BSHS had men cheerleaders. It took them a little while to get up the courage to get out there and yell, but they finally did. Berrien Springs is the only school to have men cheerleaders in the Lakeland conference. 105 Sarah Johnson. Women’s Varsity Basketball After getting off to a slow start the girls varsity basketball team reeled off 18 straight victories and finished with 205 record. The senior-dominated team won the fourth straight district championship by defeating River Valley in the title game. The team then won the regional crown highlighted by a thrilling overtime win over Cassopolis. That game was also Coach Crawford’s 200th win. The outstanding season came to an end with a 46-35 loss to White Cloud in the state quarterfinals. Four new records were set. Vickie Backus set a career mark for most games played, 74, and Lisa Granlund now holds the career free throw percentage mark at 63 percent. Granlund also set two other free throw marks for a single game, free throw attempts 24 and free throws made 17. The most valuable player award went to Lisa Granlund. She was also elected captain. Lynette Schoen was selected as the team’s most improved player. First team all-conference honors were earned by Backus, Dixon, and Granlund; Schoen was honorable mention. Defense was heavily stressed during the practices, and with Mr. Paulsen's constant saying, ‘Who wants it?” the girls were reminded that all-out effort is always needed to play the game. One of the best highlights of the season was the 25-23 overtime win against River Valley. All the girls contributed much effort and time to this successful season. Coach Scott Pluss moved down juniors Dana Dixon, Ken Peddicord, and Joe Zahrn to help the team and gain experience for themselves for next year. Their leadership was important to the team and was crucial in the many close games. Even though the team didn’t always win, Coach Pluss was very happy with the progress of each player and the team. They also won a state tournament district title with an overtime victory against River Valley, the first victory against this team in twelve years. Both students and community combined to improve support and interest in the Berrien Springs basketball program this past season. Steve Stover, Troy Wright, and Will Koch were chosen as all conference performers. The other team members were solid contributors that enabled this team to be successful. One of those losses was a one pointer loss to a very good Benton Harbor team. Practices were spent stressing defense, fundamental skills, team play, playing hard, and having fun. Highlights of the season were: 1) a nine game winning streak 2) a 10-7 upset of 6 ranked River Valley 3) winning the Berrien Springs Invitational over Eau Claire and Buchanan, and 4) a no-hitter pitched by Lisa Granlund over Coloma. Lisa Granlund, Dawn Schultz, Kathy Lindt, Marcia Shembarger, and Shelly DeFay provided senior leadership for a very young inexperienced team. Although the girls team had to rebuild, they did a fine job during the season, and with the return of twenty-one runners for the 1984 season, the Berrien Springs Women's Track Team should be back on top with the winning tradition of the past. The shamrocks, led by senior Cocaptains Mike Boswell, Kim Harrison, and Steve Stover, took first in the Regional meet qualifying for the state meet for the second straight year. The Rocks dominated at Regionals placing six teams in the finals; Ken Peddicord at first singles, Mike Boswell at second singles, Steve Stover at number 3, Kevin Bartz at Number four, Scott McMillen and Jack Lunneen at number one doubles, and Steve Tollas and Mike Jones at number three doubles. Out of these six teams, four of them won championships; Ken Peddicord at number one singles, Kevin Bartz at number two singles, Scott McMillen and Jack Lunneen at number one doubles, and Steve Tollas and Mike Jones at number three doubles. The Shamrocks also took second place in the Lakeland Conference behind a tough Lakeshore team. The Shamrocks placed six of the seven teams in the finals but they were all defeated by Lakeshore. The rocks finished a fine season with 11 wins and only 2 losses. The most valuable player award went to Ken Peddicord and the most improved to Mike Jones.
