' 'Happiness Togetherness The Yearbook staff chose the theme of Happiness—Togetherness , because somehow through the years of high school, we shared happy memories with our classmates and faculty. We were all united together with one specific similarity: We were all at B.S.H.S. for the purpose of a better tomorrow, no matter what the individual tomorrows might be. We have a continuing thread, started by our school symbol, the Shamrock, which unites the pages of the yearbook as it connects the events of the year passed. We hope that in the years of the future, you, the students, can look back through this 1982 yearbook and remember all your years of high school with happiness and cherished memories of the events shared together with the classmates you never forgot. Sincerely, The Yearbook Staff BERRIEN SPRIGS CUMMjwITV IMAM 215 W. He was groovy in the eyes of his peers as well, being named the Outstanding Young Educator for the 1966-67 school year. His groovy adventures began as a young boy when he arrived in Michigan a short time before his 12th birthday. He was impressed by Lake Michigan. Having lived in Missouri, he hadn't known there was a lake you couldn't see across. When he started Junior High in Benton Harbor, young girls thought his Missouri accent was cute. The accent may be gone now, but a touch of his Missouri boyhood remains; he is a St. Louis Cardinal baseball fan. At Benton Harbor H.S., he lettered in cross country and baseball. He attended Lake Michigan Jr. College and played state-ranked doubles in tennis. He completed Undergrad work at WMU and earned his masters in education admin-stration. After serving in the Army, he began his career at B.S.H.S. teaching U.S. History and Government in 1956-59. He was athletic director for 12 years before becoming assistant principal. Then in 1980 he was named principal of B.S.H.S. ... The 1981 football season was a fairly successful one for the Shamrocks as they finished with 6 wins and 3 losses and were 4 and 1 in the Lakeland Conference, placing second behind Cassopolis. The Shamrocks featured a very stingy, hardhitting defensive unit, a strong running game, and excellent special teams in recording their 4th consecutive winning season. The Shamrocks placed 6 players on the all Lakeland Conference football team. The players include Buzz Sherwood, offensive and defensive tdckle; Bill Hodgkinson, running back; David Shelton, defensive end; Kevin Hickman, defensive back; and Will Koch, punter. Shamrocks John Crow and Buzz Sherwood were also elected to the WHFB all Berrien County team. Also having outstanding seasons for the Shamrocks were Tony Bartolomucci, Jeff Hopkins, Mike Campbell, Keith Moyer, Mike Lewis, Mike Whetstone and Les Stockberger. The highlights of the season for the Shamrocks were a thrilling double overtime victory over Hartford 26 to 25 and a 15 to 8 overtime victory over Edwardsburg in consecutive games. The low point was a tough 7 to 6 loss to Co- loma in a very hard-hitting game. For the most part, the season was very exciting as the players gave a good effort in each game. The women's team finished the year with a 14-1 record despite injuries to two 1980 state qualifiers. The female Shamrocks won their second straight Lakeland Conference Championship and were led by captains tvlary Lunneen and Leena Mammen, who also ran their way onto the all-conference team. The men's team finished 12-3 and were much improved in the 1981 season. The male harriers were led by Jon Johnson and Kent Rudlaff, who both qualified for the state meet. Johnson established himself as the conference and regional champion and was named to the all-state team. The 1981 Shamrocks were young; we lost one runner to graduation. Beginning the year with an inexperienced squad created quite a challenge for Coach Scott Pluss and his players. The blend of personalities, skills, and dedication are what really made this season such a success. Each player was a hard worker and recognized his role and performed to the best of his ability when called upon. Statements like the one that makes something happen is the one that's in charge and the hard work and effort in practice paid off throughout the season provided many highlights, including a 13 game winning streak, Lakeland conference cochampions, with a 9-1 record and 17-3 overall record. The development and maturity which provided leadership on this squad should be valuable traits that carry over to make these young men positive contributions to our community. A heavy emphasis was put on hustle, poise, and discipline in every game played. Three things were stressed before every game: (1) hustle, (2) give your best effort, and (3) have fun! By doing these three things, the coaching staff expected to see progress made in every game whether they won or lost. With this, they brought up new ideas and dealt with student complaints to better the system. Of the many activities, they organized Homecoming festivities, dances, gave Christmas cards to nursing home patients, participated in the student exchange program, set up the blood drive, and donated scholarships to qualified students for their future in college. The yearbook class of 1982 was made up of many different individuals with different types of high school backgrounds. We had athletes, Thespians, and people with just about every other kind of background. But, we all had one thing in common, a commitment to produce one of the best yearbooks Berrien Springs High School has seen. In the beginning of the year we all wondered whether it would ever happen with all of the different personalities; but these personalities have only enhanced the contents within this book. Most of us had not been friends before this, but I am sure we can all call each other friends now. I hope you have found that to this point in the book we have presented a quality publication. I am sure you have noticed the thread; our theme this year is Happiness; Togetherness , and the thread is used to symbolize our togetherness. And when I say our, I do not mean just the yearbook class. I mean every student in Berrien Springs High School. If I have learned one thing this year, I have learned that all types of people can come together to produce something fantastic— our yearbook, and Berrien Springs High School. This play was chosen due to the fact that it was a comedy, and it had a relatively large number of parts. The cast was chosen before Christmas break and practice began directly after. The production was cast and directed by a new comer to the theatre, Mr. Ron Archer, who did a commendable job. All those who attended one of the three nights was quick to agree that the play made for a very enjoyable evening. It was presented this year March 18, 19, and 20.
